Matthew_2008
A beta is basically a game that is in it's playable stage, what I'm on about is a game in it's beta stage has everything put together and is playable but it is unrefined. Or you I guess you could say a game in it's beta stages have finnished in development and are ready for the testing phase.

FierceDeityIX
Not quite. A beta is a development stage. It's basically saying, "the game is very nearly done". Sometimes companies do public betas which allow people to try out this almost finished game and give feedback. This lets the developers add some polish before the final game is released. EDIT: It isn't very nearly finished, it's about halfway from being finished. This is why public betas are used, to give feedback and change the game as necessary. It also means that devlopers can show their work at places like E3. Edited July 19, 2008 by FierceDeityIX

And a beta version probably wouldnt be as good as the final version because of that reason, even if it did have your precious fingerless gloves. And it certainly wouldnt have more cars in it. Edit: damn, i meant to post in the other beta topic. oh well nevermind. Edited July 19, 2008 by Talakua
greebo-man
Sort of like a prototype of the game. And everybody gets eixted when we see some beta stuff, 'cause they want it in the game. And Beta is the second letter of the Greek alphabet, isn't it?
DudeWeresMyHog
Bungie released a downloadable beta for halo 3 before the game came out to give users a taste of the game and so they could give feed back on how to improve it.

d1337r
Beta version (as it is being said by gamers) is the pre-release version that is given to some magazines to preview games. Beta versions often have: * Something not yet done (e.g. Hyman Stadium in VC beta maps) * Something done or almost done, but removed (Darkel missions in III) * Something changed (cop car colors) * More glitches Some things can be better in a beta version, than in final. Of course, there are very small chances for a beta to leak. Also there are 'pre-release' versions, that have minimal changes to the final. For example, the GTA IV version that leaked a week before release was a pre-release, not a beta.

Hmmm nice bike
soo they are going to bring out a new GTA beta which is going to be better?? but right now its in testing or hasn't finished? Like it was said, "Beta" just means the pre-release version of a game that is just used for testing, adding things, removing things, and bug-fixing by developers and testers (basically, the pre-release screenshots and old trailers are of the beta version of the game). It is not released to the public (no beta version of GTA has ever been released to the public), and it is not for sale or for download by anyone.
