ding ding ding. The acting, alone, in Apocalypse Now blows black hawk down out of the water.

Yes it is your view

still if you link a trailer to black hawk down and call it one of the greatest movies ever, well that speaks for itself.

And if you read the title.

Pre-80's war films blow modern films out of the water.

Back when it was about acting, and not relying on millions of dollars in special-effects and "flavour-of-the-week" big name, overpaid "actors".

You need to see more films.

My favourites are:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Pulp Fiction

Waking Life

All better than Black Hawk and Saving Private Ryan in my opinion, although I did enjoy them don't get me wrong.

Now that's a good film. Probably my favourite.

I liked Saving Private Ryan, but you can't beat a bit of Apocalypse Now, or Platoon.

Platoon is the best war movie made in my opinion. Private Ryan was great too.

Black Hawk Down was a good one if you just wanna watch special effects and battles

but the dialogue and the acting could have used some work

Yeah, fair enough.

But I beleive it is a great story.

Somalia militia leader capturin UN food supplies for the people, killing 10,000s.

UN peace keepers come to restore order with the help of the marines, then when the marines leave, they start killing the peace keepers, so the marines are again sent in to kill the leader, and capture prisoners.

Its baised on a true story, so there was a story to it...........

Anyone seen Saviour with Dennis Quaid? one of the best war movies i have ever seen

It's not exactly littered with huge battles and special effects, but if you like films with a

poignant story and great acting it's definitely one for you

It's about a soldier from the French Foreign Legion fighting in Serbia, it's a very realistic

depiction and definitely grittier than your average war film

Ugh, as I recall Lord of the Rings is a war film series as well. I mean, Tolkien intended to call it "War of the Ring"! Though Star Wars is just some damn civil war. And in Firefly the damn war is over. And the war in Total Annihilation is just silly, oh wait, we were talking about films. Right.

The direction in Saving Private Ryan is amazing. The Omaha Beach landing cannot be topped. After that it's an 7/10 movie. Veterans say that's how it was, but that they think that the sea wall part was better in The Longest Day. I don't like Black Hawk Down all that much. Apocalypse Now was great too, definetely one of my favorite movies. Never watched Das Boot, but I do remember Stalingrad.

This isn't even worth to be discussed...Black Hawk Down doesn't even compare to Saving Private Ryan and that movie was good, but not great.

My top five hasn't changed in the past 15 years, and I stick to it:

Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Das Boot, Apocalypse Now, The Bridge on the River Kwai. In no particluar order, but a special mention goes to Das Boot for being a total surprise movie for me. The anxiety of being trapped in a submarine has been delivered prefectly by Petersen, too bad he was never able to repeat a masterpiece of similar proportions...and the musical score is legendary!

"The Bridge" was great. I like Alec Guiness, and I've only seen three movies with him in 'em (Lawrence, The Bridge, and Star Wars).
