Destructable Enviroment

Recommended Posts

I believe that the next GTA should focus more on its destructable enviroment. For example....when you drive a car into the side of a building, it should look like a car just ran into a building. And with the new physics engine they can make this look very realistic. But I dont think that the PS3 is powerful enough to handle what I'm thinking.

To understand what I mean, go see Hancock.

Thoughts?

Why is this in the IV forums?

just some wishful thinking while playing GTA IV....no need to get upset mubd

I always seem to want more whenever I play GTA games.

Only proof of destructable environment I've seen so far is when I crash my car into the side of a brick wall and it leaves some cracks.

It's pretty cool. confused.gif

Yeah, I thought that you can create more destruction than that, but I guess I was wrong. If you crash your car into a building or leave bullet holes in a wall, does it stay there, after you save the game? Probably not, right?

But imagine permanently destructable enviroments... you would destroy the swing glitch after a few tries tounge.gif lol bad idea.

I sometimes wish that GTA IV was more like Oblivion in that stuff you put in certain places stays there. But that would be a huge mess, and not very realistic as chances are park and recreational services aren't going to let you permanently park your stolen police chopper on the lawn in Central Park.

That's a real can of worms. Forget Hancock, it was a movie; they have all the time in the world and super powerful PCs to render deformations. I read an article on how the deformable cars were handled, and that's intense. Intense enough to make me believe that deformable buildings aren't feasible. Having the city as static geometry allows the render to make big gains when rendering it. Making it dynamic will slow everything to a crawl.

Could you post the article, I'd be interested to read that.

I can see enormous problems with this including the fact that with a rocket launcher, in real life you could practically take down most smaller structures easily and with a few conveniently placed shots even some larger buildings. All you would end up with was a city full of rubble!

I'll move this to GTA NeXt.

I thought this was a good idea too. and would add real excitment to the game!! i wish they had put in a little damage on buildings and other stationery objects such as overhead railtracks!!. people have sayed it wouldnt work and would really slow the game down. and that the game would end up a city of rubble by the time it is completed. but could they perhaps only include it in multiplayer games. That would be cool. And it would not matter as it would only be damaged for the lenght of the game. i would love to blow a hole in the side of a train.lol.

Last I checked a game like Crysis has full destructible environments and some buildings and it takes a monster computer to play that at High detail while destroying most everything in sight, so I don't think the PS3 or 360 have the power to do destructible buildings.

If we wanted to do this in a city like Liberty City, it would require horrible effects, cars, and graphics. It might run but taking other things with it.

You can destroy environments in Mercs 2. You could in Mercs 1, for the PS2. I'd love to see this.

This was touched on in the pinned "What do you want to see..." topic, but what the hell...

Instead of a drive-by, how about flying over in a Hydra or Hunter and firing rockets to turn the whole place into a smoldering pile of rubble? cool.gif

This would be nice, but probably difficult to actually make happen. It'd have to be done right too. I don't want to be able to make skyscrapers collapse just by standing at the base of it and whacking it with a baseball bat.
