neuroticomic
i am excited to get IV even though i have read how scaled back it is in terms of missions structure, unlockables, side stuff. obviously San Andreas is the cause of all the negativity surrounding IV. OK maybe not ALL of it, but a good portion anyways. All of the additions from III to Vice, coupled with the insane amount of additions from Vice To SA made a lot of peoples expectations way too high. So I present this... ....what if IV was the follow up to III. Would the backlash be as harsh? I don't think so. Also, I am looking at IV as a springboard for future next gen versions. they created this one from the ground up. as they did with III. Just my quick thoughts. Exkabewbikadid
obviously San Andreas is the cause of all the negativity surrounding IV. OK maybe not ALL of it, but a good portion anyways. For me, SA and its features had nothing to do with it. Don't get me wrong, IV is a solid game in most areas, I just personally don't like a lot of the decisions that were made regarding the controls and the overuse of realism that obstructs fun and fluid gameplay, in my opnion. To be honest though, if IV did follow immediately after III, I'd still not be too pleased with the fact that there are no rampages, no hidden packages that actually had rewards, no ability to fall ten stories and live, not as many fun weapons, no ability to sprint forever, and so on. Jack744
GTA 3 was the foundations of something greater, which was San Andreas, so think of GTA IV as the new next gen foundations of something even better...
Ripper666GER
I am the only that thinks "Oh my god San Andreas was soooo gaay" Don´t get me wrong, it was a great game, I had fun with it, but all that "gay" things like the gym, tatoos.... If 4 where released after 3, then Vice City should follow...I mean...VC was the best GTA ever I think...or maybe it´s 4? Hmm...don´t know... Yeah, you're right. Rampages were awesome, and I think it would be fun as hell if there was a flamethrower in this game. I am disappointed that there are no REAL rewards after the jumps and pigeons. If there was at least something UNIQUE (like a racing car after the jumps), it would be better. Infinite ammo is also something I miss from the last gen GTAs. By the way, you can sprint forever, just keep taping the A/X button.

IV is REALLY gay compared to Sa, Bernie,Brucie, doing a mission where ya blind date a gay man and bla bla Having the Optional freedom to get tattoed-lift weights... Less gay if compared to the car wash and paying bridge toll.lol I agree with OP, Sa+the hype made us think it be more stuff to interact and play with...so in this way IV dont deliver. All in all IMO its the best GTA anyway...The ped animations flows now, drawing distance works, car handling/physics-graphics is pure joy and the online modes can be great fun with rite players. Jack744
Generally Vice City is seen as the best grand theft auto, especially at the time, because it took something reasonably new...(3d gta) and made it cooler than gta 3..
Raptomex
If it followed GTA III, the storyline probably would've have been completely different. But who knows.

SaintJimmy
Also, I am looking at IV as a springboard for future next gen versions.they created this one from the ground up. as they did with III. Thats exactly right. They're just doing tradition, man. III was the start of it's gen. It was simplistic and built up with its sequels. Iv is the start of its gen. god, if only more people thought like us lol.

LiamLufc
All this talk about IV not living up the the hype, I love IV. Ok, so Rockstar have taken away a lot of features, most of these I liked, but this has been done to make the game more realistic. You wouldn't see a tank rolling its way down NYC, or a Jetpack. I think that the decision to remove the right of changing hair-do's, tattoes was a big mistake, however. It may not have lived up to the hype, but IMO It's still the best game out atm, and it will be until then next GTA

TopHat01
Remember, GTA:III really was what made the PlayStation 2 go from a "decent system" to an "awesome system". GTA:III was the first of it's kind, really (sandbox styled game in 3D animation, of course using RenderWare, though.) Vice City and San Andreas basically just added more accessibility, and interactive objects. San Andreas was epic only because of it's customization features, and at the time, the swimming feature was what saved everyone. That, and tact on a HUGE environment. Vice City was fun with the boats, but God forbid you fell off... ------------------------------------------- I'm going to believe that Rockstar has something going for next generation consoles that will have features like San Andreas, but not clone it. I think they'll keep the Euphoria physics, but add more interactive objects, and simply put, make the game more "live". We've seen what the geniuses at Rockstar have accomplished, all we have to do is wait. I liked GTA:IV for it's realism factor (the sound you make when hitting a pedestrian, the city sounds, etc.) and as well as avery deep story line, comparable to Action Movies. The 'sandbox" gameplay could definitely be worked on, and more customization will definitely be needed, but I'd just like to see what Rockstar is/will be working on. My two cents... vettefan88
IV is only the foundation for future gta's to come and is on... BLA BLA BLA BLA that's such a load of BS. what if somebody kicked you in the balls right now and said it was only the foundation for a ****job. would you tell them that the kick to the balls was enjoyable in itself, so much so that you enjoyed it more than the actual ****job received from you're old girlfriend. NO. who cares if it's only the foundation, that doesn't make it more enjoyable. people are talking about how they took everything out to make it more realistic, and this new realistic way is so much better... and then these same people go on to talk about their amazing cop chase when a whole fleet of cop cars came after them LIEK ZOMG!!!! that's so much more better than a f***ing army chasing you. good thing they removed the army and tanks to protect realism. IV supporters are both illogical, and still caught in the hype. they can't look at the game for what it actually is, but instead look at it for what people want them to see it as. R* could of put you in a raft, drifting around in the middle of the ocean with nothing to do but drift and every 5 minutes "MISSION PASSED" comes up on the screen and called it IV and these people would of called it the greatest game ever. "groundbreaking!" "it captures life adrift at sea so well" "stealing cars was overrated, besides, there aren't cars in the ocean n00b! GTFO!" "the missions are SO MUCH FUN! I pass them first try " and whenever you try to sign into multiplayer your dog dies.
