Best Free-Roaming Game Prediction?

Recommended Posts

With GTA IV having been out a while, it is clear that some are over the moon with it, and some not so much. Anyway, I was just wondering if you think any of the upcoming free-roaming games will beat it. Now, there's probably a more technical word than "free-roaming", so sorry if I sound rather amateurish, it's just what I refer to them as. Games like Grand Theft Auto, True Crime, whatever, where you can go out and do what you want.

Now, I think we should keep it confined to console games, because obviously something like Spore is not exactly comparable.

Anyway, I admit I haven't actually played GTA IV, but I think that Fallout 3, Just Cause 2 and Mercenaries: World in Flames will all give it a run for its money. Anybody agree/disagree?

Sand-box games?

If you've never even played GTA IV, how will you ever know?

I don't think Grand Theft Auto is a game that can be beated in terms of its genre. Sure, Saints Row might be fun and True Crime might tickle your fancy, but GTA was the beginning of sand-box games and is definitely superior to most "clones." Then there's the fun factor level; some agree that GTA IV is more fun to play, some think that Saints Row is more fun...

However, some games manage to pull it off. I think that the most promising one so far is Mafia 2.

I think Fallout stands a chance of redefining a freeroam experience, if Bethesda learned anything from their failures with Oblivion. On the other hand, Oblivion sold so well, that they may be content to feed us the same pablum all over again.

I don't think games like Fallout 3 can be lumped into the same category as GTA and Mafia, the better term is probably free-roaming crime games so we only cover the Driver's, True Crime's, Mafia's, Saints Row and Crackdown etc.

As to what will be the next great game in this style, its obviously Mafia II with Saints Row 2 being a fairly alright game following it.

Comparing Mercenaries 2 with GTA4 is like comparing MGS to Splinter Cell...the section/genre might be comparable (sandbox vs. sandbox, stealth vs. stealth), but the themes, the plot, the goal of the game - everything is fundamentally different! I don't think Mercenaries 2 will give GTA4 a hunt for the money, it's more likely that it will create a niche of it's own...

Lets see. Mercs 2 vs GTA4. You can definitely compare them.

They are both action sandbox games;

They both got character driven stories;

They all got vehicles and weapons;

Now what Mercs2 got what GTA4 doesn't have

Mercs 2:

More weapons that are a lot more fun

Better action system (more intense shooting and killing)

Cars, tanks, helicopters, planes - all of those have multiple weapons attached to them

3 main characters

Ability to shoot and destroy everything you see

Better graphics

Your own army

Big arsenal of rocket and air strikes just for fun of it

Probably more but I cant really type all that sh*t.

The only thing GTA4 has is Euphoria. I dont know what were those R* guys thinking. Euphoria is not enough to make a good game

Mercs 2 also has the abilty to burn trees smile.gif and the fact that the area is mostly a jungle.... oh and they are using another type of ragdoll system that wont be prescripted... but it adds realistic weights to people unlike gta iv.

Crytex(w/e) is coming out with another sandbox for consoles that has nothing to do with Crysis series.... that might be good.

No, you definitely CAN'T compare them. They may be sandbox games, but other then that they are totally different. Can you imagine Niko calling in an air strike, putting together an army of mercenaries, and driving tanks through Liberty City while trying to take down a corrupt government? No.

Mercs 2 will be amazing, I am sure, but really, use some common sense. You can't compare a game where you are a lowly criminal trying to rise the ranks, to one where you are a cold mercenary taking down a corrupt government in Venezuela.

Also looking forward to Just Cause 2. Bad graphics aside, I loved how massive the island was in the first game. I still don't understand all the negative reviews. I thought the game was really fun. Hopefully the second one improves on everything while keeping a huge setting.

What are your gripes with Oblivion?

I mean, I have mine, but they're probably different. I hated the leveling system, where everyone grew stronger with you, which seemed to defeat the purpose of busting your ass to level up. All the annoying cave-roaming, the inability to kill major characters, only *knock them out, the challenge of coming up with money, and the overall dissapointing storyline. There's more.

I agree entirely. However, I bought it for PC, so I had endless enjoyment with it after those problems and more were bettered using mods. Oblivion's just one of those games I'd hate to have bought not for PC. I suppose many people who bought SA for PC would say that to me however, although I still enjoyed it more than any other game for my old PS2.

Also, I did not care about the cave roaming, and didn't find money to be an issue. Awful horses, omniscient guards and just no sense of adventure ruined it for me. Mods righted those though.

GTA4 doesnt have many features because it is technically a GTA3 remake; it is the start of the new GTA-canon, just as GTAIII was. and its going to build up features with is sequels.

Maybe if half of the dimwitted gta-iv haters out there understood this, there would be more peace here.

I wonder how long do we have to wait for a GTA style free roaming Star Wars game sad.gif

there is one, its that Star Wars: Galaxies game. its a mmorpg.

I'm thinking of getting it....it looks sexah.

AS FOR MY PREDICTSHUN:

Star Trek Online.

My father/uncles/cousins/brother all love star trek a helluva lot more than me but this game looks like its going to f*cking rock! Look it up.

Every planet = explorable.

You start off as like a cadet in a ship (the ship is somone elses!) and work in the ship with other players

then when you rank up you get to get your OWN ship where you have people work on it for you.

Oh good god yes

I know about that MMORPG and I dont like it. Too many Star Wars movie fans (I hate the movies)

And I hate star Trek and that bald little c*nt Picard tounge2.gif

I was thinking something in GTA style, only with futuristic vehicles and weapons. And of course lightsabers and force powers. SW games rock
