A reminder about Warez

Recommended Posts

Ok, every time someone mentions downloading stuff from the internets, bittorrent, or eyepatches, the thread gets turned into an agreementfest of half a dozen people all saying the same thing. So, here's a conclusive listing of my warez policy for the PC Chat forum:

  • No talking about warez
  • No talking about piracy
  • No talking about downloading copyrighted stuff without permission
However!
  • Downloading things from the internet is not illegal
  • Therefore, you are allowed to talk about it
  • If you have pirated something, or suspect someone else has, I don't want to hear about it
Simply put:

Someone saying they downloaded something, or asking for help with P2P software, or whatever: OK

Someone wrongly saying that's warez and not allowed: Shut up

Someone saying that no, it isn't warez: OK

Eight more people saying that it isn't warez: Shut up

If we just avoid the warez topic altogether, we'll all have a much easier time. kthx.

You got GTAVC last year, I don't want to hear about how you got it (and that's nothing new). Most people got the game legitimately and that's what we assume unless someone specifically mentions that they pirated it.

Another thing I forgot to mention is, if there is warez in a topic, don't just post about it - GTAF has a policy on that, it's pretty much spam. There's a report post link that alerts the mods and I ASAP, use that instead.

In other news, Canada may soon make p2p file sharing illegal.

f*cking ridiculous.

Oh dear God. That's really nasty.

...and not to mention making PVR's illegal! You can only record TV shows on VHS, then watch it once.

Great job, tories.

I did just that while alerting the offender to read a EULA some times, then come to terms with their limited rights to use such and such...

@Otter,

That Canada policy might help to bring back Sony Betamax, we can only hope. Better then VHS, well, standard VHS. There is DVHS! I would recommend a TIVO DirecTV HDD recorder like I have, that has 250GB storage space!

Yes, Canada's new policy may well do good.

But it will be bloody horrible for ligitimate P2P file sharing.

They think that will stop p2p. Someone will only write a different type of p2p but wont call it p2p instead they will find another way to share files differently.

The only country that has capability of stopping file sharing right now is North Korea, and that alone should be a good enough reason for others not to try.
