Why can't the next Grand Theft Auto

The big problem with using london as a location is the lack of armed police. You would be running around shooting peds with guns bought of gangsters and the police would turn up with pepper spray to try and stop you.

if you are reported to have weapons armed police will turn up lol

Why do these games always have to be set in crime infested sh*t holes?, I think they should do one in Sydney, it would be like unleashing a dingo in a child care centre. Sort of like "trouble in paradise" if you know what I mean. tounge.gif

The primary reason is that GTA is all about parodying American crime. That's why it's being sold to a predominately American audience. Americans will get all the jokes on American culture, while any foreigner not well-versed will be stumped for a lot of the jokes.

Another problem is the roads. The majority of London roads are too small for the current amount of traffic and high-speed chases. GTA is supposed to be a "pick up and play" game, so a person who's never played before can easily get the hang of driving. In The Getaway, almost everybody I've met who played it was unfamiliar with British roads and crashed because of all the tight spaces, not to mention the sudden switch of driving sides, so a lot of new players found themselves driving into oncoming traffic.

Moreover, by switching to British audiences, they would alienate most American buyers, who like all the jokes about their culture and the distinct familiarity of everywhere they drive. If they were trying to understand British humor (which relatively few Americans fail to understand), figure out what people with thicker accents were saying, and drive on the wrong side of the road in small streets, they wouldn't find it fun, and would just drop it. There's a reason the London packs weren't so well-received.

As a Brit I'm pretty sure I got all the jokes, if not more than an American gamer, there's plenty of references to British culture in the game. The Groupe Sechs vans are a good example. Americans see that it is funny because it sounds like group sex, British will think it's funny because it sounds like group sex and and is a pisstake of the bumbling private security company Group four. Same with Hippy Shopper in SA

Yeah, the roads in getaway were not representative of real London roads, they were way squashed down, Getaway had a really claustrophobic feel to it because they modeled the roads too narrow. There was also too much traffic.

I think the whole wrong side of the road argument is weak, have you ever heard of any Brit, Irishman or Australian complaining on this forum that they keep running into oncoming traffic in GTA? Basically, your on the wrong side, you see a car coming towards you so you switch lanes, easy.

I'm not picking your post apart personally chitoryu, you just happened to be the last post.

Another popular argument is the accent thing - "I carnt understand a god damn thing an Englishman is saying", I'm sorry but are you all Republican Space Rangers or something. Odd that Little Jacob is one of the most popular characters and a lot of the characters in this game are eastern European. If you can get Americans to buy a game where the main protagonist is an immigrant from a communist country, then having English accents shouldn't be a problem.

Besides that every other ped around the middle park area of Algonguin seems to be British.

Somebody else posted here that London wouldn't be good because it doesn't have the sort of landmarks that American cities have, I have no idea where that thought came from. To name a few: Big Ben, the London eye, Trafalgar square, tower bridge, tower of London, The Dome,....etc,etc. Name me as many landmarks from Miami or LA.

Having said all this I'm am going to say that I don't think London would be a good idea at the moment. biggrin.gif

Crime and in particular, violent crime has exploded in London over recent years and has become a politically hot topic. If Rockstar were to produce a game based on a British city that encourages crime they would be torn to pieces by the press, media and politicians. The whole jack Thompson thing would be a drop in the ocean in comparison. One way to get around this would be to have the game based in the past i suppose this might work.

I live in London and trust me, I would love to see a GTA London, but I don't think it will be done. I've seen a lot of post here that go along the lines of:

"London would suckass it's sh*t and boring, I think Sheffield would be well good" - MrSheffield666

"GTA needs to stay in America, how about somewhere inland like Cincinnati" - Ohioman

"It rains too much in London - I think an Australian city would be much better" - TheMelborneDestroyer

"London is a sh*t whole full of crime, how about a nice rural Ireland location" - "Celticpride85"

"I would crash all the time if I had to drive on the left" - Stevie Wonder

So I'm going to break the rules and say no to London for now.

I think we'll see a GTA outside of the USA sooner or later. R* might want to make things different. If it's in the UK I think it won't be a replica of a city but a mixture of several ones.

I don't see why London can't be the next location.......There's enough crime in the South....Plus it pretty big so i cant see a reason why not....Or maybe just take Some of the Uk's location and use that as a city like GTA:SA used Various US cities

You forget how stupid and whiny Americans can be, though.

Really? I've seen a lot of footage of London, and my mother went to a private school there, and she agreed on the small size of the roads. Did they do any changing of the roads lately?

Really? I didn't know that. I'll have to go look up Group Four now.

P.S. Is that Monty Python in your avatar? I recognize the "No it isn't" guy. Is it John Cleese or someone who just looks like him?

Ahh Sir, you put your fellow countrymen down too much, I work for an American company and I know a lot are very far from stupid. At worst I would say a little stuck in their ways.

Really? I've seen a lot of footage of London, and my mother went to a private school there, and she agreed on the small size of the roads. Did they do any changing of the roads lately?

Well I guess you've kinda got your main strips that are at least four lanes in width, which are comparable to the roads surrounding middle park in GTA4. These intersect at intervals of about half a mile and between them you have your standard two lane roads. I would say I wide road in GTA IV, say Burlesque is about the same width as Oxford Street in London. Of course Broadway in NY may by err, broader in real life.

P.S. Is that Monty Python in your avatar? I recognize the "No it isn't" guy. Is it John Cleese or someone who just looks like him?

Yes it's Monty Python's John Cleese and Michael Palin, in the Argument Clinic sketch. See here:

It also a reference my internal turmoil when I think to myself "is GTA IV the best GTA so far?"

GTA really needs to change now, it's either Vice City or Liberty City, its boring now. London would be cool, i'd really like to drive with traffic on the right side of the road, which is the left side lol. You know Kenya gets so many imports from the UK the decided to make it easier for lorry drivers by saying that people should drive on the left from now on. Unfortunatley due to the poor infrastructure only half the people with cars got the message. True story.

I hate London city. It's one of the few cities in the world that I just couldn't wait to leave.

I hate Dublin. Tiny place with fvck all to do apart from the area known as "Temple Bar" which you soon get sick of VERY quickly. Full of culchies going on about The Ra every 5 minutes and what Britain has done to Ireland.

Get the f*ck over it man! We don't carry on about The Romans, The Normans, The Vikings and God knows all the other people we've been invaded by.

Wow. You're a retard.

I said I don't like London as a city, but for some reason you had to bring sectarianism into it?

Retard.

It should be set in Glasgow.  Your an illegal immigrant trying to find work whilst avoiding neds and their rottweilers trying to 'chib' you.

If you thought understanding LJ was bad, just wait until you hear the citizens of Glasgow.

lolol

I think Glasgow too, cause I think they should do Scotland in honour of where they come from, Edinburgh(where they are now) doesn't seem to have as much crime as Glasgow though that could just be because I live in Lanarkshire. Doing it in Dundee (where they're actually from) would be kinda boring I think. But it wouldn't be as bad as if they done it in Inverness or Aberdeen, minigames would all be about shaggin sheep etc.

If not Scotland though then perhaps Ireland. They could do it in Belfast or Derry and have the character decide which side he wants to be on (Republican/Nationalist or Loyalist/Unionist) and have similar missions for both sides. But then again you could include that in Scotland too being that both countries are almost one and lot of Irish immigrants.

What annoys me is for example a good Scottish athlete, the English will call him British (despite the fact you're only truly 'British' if you're Welsh or Cornish) to make it sound good for them but if he's sh*te then they'll call him Scottish to distance themselves.

If Aus I think it should be Melbourne. Or perhaps a hybrid of Melbourne/Sydney as the underworlds are somewhat linked.

I'm related to someone who used to be one of Australia's top 10 most wanted and he worked in both Melbourne & Sydney and knew leaders from both, new that chopper reid too. My relative is not a crim anymore btw.

That sounds good, could "drive", fly or swim (if you really wanted to) between the two. There's no bridge so it's not so much drive to this location and that's it you'd actually have to use other transport then find a suitable vehicle when you arrive (unless you take car on a ferry)

It doesn't have to be set now though, it would be better off in the 60's or 70's in my opinion. Still you can't really use reality as an example since Rockstar don't create exact replicas of things. Rockstar can do and add anything they want.
