anus
Hold on, before you buy 512 sticks tell me, is the 1GB of RAM detected when the PC is booting up? Is the RAM detected in the BIOS too? If its detected there, Windows has just screwed up, this kind of thing happens sometimes when new hardware is added. A reinstall of WIndows should fix it. CCPD
As I said when I change the sticks and turn my PC on it says that the new memory is detected. Then Windows XP logo, then black screen followed by the error message. I formatted my HD and reinstalled Windows day before trying the RAM. I had to do the whole system reinstall twice because I kept getting some problems with installing updates. Shall I do it the third time?
Girish
Oh damn, I may have just found out your problem. Read this. I'm sorry, I was unaware about this Dell thing. Besides, the Dell service guys should have told you that you need to have maximum amount of memory in each socket.
CCPD
I already read it, and what's the problem? Edited June 25, 2008 by CCPD
Girish
I already read it, and what's the problem? The total maximum RAM that you can have is 1GB. However, for optimal performance, you need to have the maximum amount of RAM in each of the sockets which is 512MB. Since you have 2 sockets, you need to have 512MB in each of the sockets. Optimal performance means where system stability can be guaranteed; anything above than that, the system might suffer.
CCPD
That could be the problem indeed. I guess I would have to buy 512MB RAM and sell the 1GB I bought.
anus
Before selling the RAM, format and reinstall Windows just once more. There's a high chance that it will work. The thing is though, if the maximum a RAM slot in your PC supports is 512MB, the 1GB stick won't be detected as 1GB. So its most probably the OS. CCPD
So I should reinstall my OS and then try RAM, or insert the RAM stick and then reinstall my OS?
Deuce Deuce
Keep the RAM in there and then do the reinstall. If to no avail, re-use your other 512MB stick and buy another 512 with the specs I said earlier in the topic.
Star-Lord
If this doesn't work then the problem may be caused by the type of Ram you are inserting they may be a chance where your motherboard will support two sticks that make one gig instead of 1 stick that makes 1 gig.Yup! just like I said above after looking at the link that girishb posted it turns out that the maximum memory for ea. memory bank is 512. I also noticed too! that DELL recommends updating the BIOS after maxing out the ram.CCPD: Is there any computer shops by where you live? Maybe you can trade it for two 512's modules. CCPD
Dell sucks donkey’s balls! The only thing their technical support team knows is how to copy and paste text, and how to turn PC on and off. Every time I contacted them they just copied information from the website I posted here. Once they even advised me to get 2GB RAM 533MHz, but after I confronted them they told be they made a mistake and just repeated what I said, f*ckers. Thanks for advice and continuous support guys. You helped me a lot. It’s a good idea to trade 1GB stick for two 512MB ones, I’ll try that.
Slamman
Not everyone lives in Dell Hell, I've read plenty online and it's not all negative. Dell is proactive unlike some other companies... They keep working on improvements so you should get your concerns to someone there who'll listen. I haven't had any major problems, but the Virtual memory dialog popped up a few times during a lot of web windows being opened, I clicked on the OK and it kept on working. I stop to clear out my Temp Internet files because they do full up in IE often.
anus
Try the Windows reinstall first before you trade. Like Deuce said, keep the RAM in the PC and do the reinstall.
