Settings corrupted?!

I was playing the game normally (finished it for the first time). Then I quit the game and took out the CD. Then my sister switched users and then a blue screen came up saying something along the lines of software corrupted and then the system restarted and I had to set the initial settings again (Language, time etc.). Why did this happen? Was it because I've been playing for too long or something? I need to know what did this, so I can take measures to avoid it.
