bblancobrnx
As it stands, I see a lot of forums (including this one) where a lot of underage kids are playing this game. Do you think that Rockstar or the video game industry should make it harder for these players to play the game? I think the game is rated over 18, so that is technically like a rated X movie. I don't agree with that rating, but that is the rating nonetheless. I know there are plenty of parents and friends buying this game for others, and it is getting into the hands of players that are under 18. Should they implement some kind of age verification into the game to stop this? It really doesn't bother me, but it might if I had kids. I don't know how they could do some kind of verification except via the internet, but not everyone has internet. Anyone else have any feelings on this? FrozenFire
No, it's all up to the parent. Which is how it should be. Unfortunately, parents these days are irresponsible idiots who buy their spoiled foulmouth 11 year old Xbox Live, and GTA IV.
bblancobrnx
No, because harder for them could possibly mean harder for players that are overage too. I agree that it could, but what if they could do it in a way that was of minimal inconvenience to players who are old enough? Would you be for it? Even if they want to, they can't. You are so right about a lot of parents being irresposible, though. Geez, I remember when I was like 12 I wanted to watch the movie Road House, and my mom wouldn't let me. Parents are not the only way that kids get this game (although they are probably most common). So you don't think that the video game industry should have any kind of additional security to prevent kids from playing this game? LOL, I remember when I was a kid I used to play the computer game Leisure Suit Larry. There were 5 questions at the beginning (random out of 100) that were old general knowledge trivia multiple choice. Nowadays that would never work because kids could just look up the answers online!!! Edited June 4, 2008 by bblancobrnx
Tatertotts
I don't think there would be any way of actually verifying a player's age without creating a huge invasion of privacy. A 12-year-old can do math and enter a fake age into a computer, so the only way to actually verify age would be incredibly intrusive, and would require all sorts of personal information that nobody wants on a freaking game server. And if parents or friends buy kids the games, there's nothing the game developer or game store can do about it, short of sending an international task force door-to-door to checking the age of each player every time the game is started. Mix6APlix
I agree 100% Frozenfire. That said the day I have a child, they will have a 360 controller in their hand listening to the music of Liberty Citry disc.

Lol, I love how you guys say "kids", but yet your probably around 18-25 years old.

Yeah I guess it would be very invasive. The only ways I can think of are wwith drivers license or state id numbers, and that really wouldn't be fair to people who are above 18 that buy the game. I guess the biggest thing would be for parents to password protect the content blocker on their child's console.

Parents could rent x-rated movies for their kids if they wanted to, which is a more apt analogy.

wayninja
Every time you start the game you should get a window asking you to put in your birthdate like they do on websites with GTA IV content. It's fool proof. Of course, my birthdate has been Jan 1st 19XX where XX is however far I can spin my mouse wheel in one go...
Starion
No, I think the laws should stand as they are as far as selling video games is concerned. For example, I am 15. I waited in line, at midnight with my dad on launch night, when we bought it, I gave my dad my pre-order slip, and he bought it with my money. I've been playing the game quite a lot, and it has had no bad or corrupting effect on me whatsoever. I have also played Grand Theft Auto 2 and 1 before I was 10, and to be honest, I'm not a psychopath. The game may have different effects on different people other than me, but some foods and drinks have different effects on different people, it doesn't mean the food should become unsellable to certain people. So in other words, the laws are fine as they stand, and should not be changed. Also, if the laws were tightened there's nothing stopping people in this day and age buying the game from the internet.. So yeah, it would be pointless anyway, and it would also mean that shops would get a drop in sales, a small drop in sales but a drop nonetheless. I will admit though, I do think that parents shouldn't let their kids play certain games online until they're.. I dunno, 13/14 or whatever, because a lot of young people do act like total assholes when playing online, teamkilling, swearing, shouting, insulting players, etc. It's especially annoying in games in GTA when a slightly more mature group of people is playing and some annoying 11 year old ruins it for everyone. Meh, I felt like having a small rant tonight. mod it with Nitrous Oxide and chassis dyno.
bblancobrnx
Like I said before, I really don't care at this time. I WAS curious how others felt about it, though. Does the rating on this game stand for 'player over 18 only' or 'players under 18 should not play without parental supervision?' I also believe that the 'over 18' rating on this game is way harsh. Crude
You really cannot really stop 12 year olds, or even 10 year olds for that matter if they were smart enough to learn their first time on the 'age verification' devices they have now on certain sites. Fell for this once & once only when I was 9 or 10 myself back in the day. Any decent minded child would know to put the birthdate in the 80's etc to get on the site etc. How do you think some of these 12 year olds are able to get on the Gta4 site? Tatertotts
When I first read the thread's title, I thought "Should it be harder for them to play?" actually referred to gameplay difficulty. Like, make it so difficult that little kids would get frustrated and not play. For the record, that would be ok with me.
