Radio repetitiveness

Although I like some of the songs on the radio in IV, I definitely like less than I did in SA and VC. Even III had some pretty great tracks to drive around to.

I think a major missed opportunity in IV was to actually hook up to some real radio stations. The current generation of consoles are all expected to be constantly hooked up to the Internet so why not stream real New York radio stations from the net? The music would always be varied and up-to-date, and for necessary in-game announcements (e.g. news telling you the bridges are open or closed, or any other major in-game event) they could just fade out the live stream and and fade in their own announcement. They could still have the same in-game talk stations for comedic value, but I don't see why the music stations couldn't be streamed live.

Maybe it's just me but I usually just end up listening to the chat radio stations.

Yeah these are really funny but there's only about 20-30 mins on each station before they start to loop. I think there's only about 3 chat stations so you can hear everything in about 2 hours... then it just gets annoying cause you are hearing the same thing over and over again.

I cant tell you how many times I've turned on Massive B and just hear "Baddda Dem Baddda Dem Baddda Dem Baddda Dem Baddda Dem Baddda Dem"

I swear I would've thought that was the only song on that station If I didn't listen to the whole thing thru.

The soundtracks In the past games all fit that game. This one doesnt feel like It at all, It's like they threw together some songs and made It the soundtrack. Aint sayin their bad songs, just they dont fit

i feel the exact same way... songs are way to commercial... and i dont think they can stream live radios cuz of copyright claims by the artists and what not.

  • 2 weeks later...

I didnt want to start a whole new thread, so I thought Id just post in here.

Ive been listening to GTA III's and GTA:VC's radio stations and I definitely think now that while I like GTA IV, the radio is too realistic, its not funny and off the wall like the previous GTA radio stations were. I mean take this excerpt for example, it's instantly more amusing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh696sI__IQ&feature=related

It has the elements of a real station but its all stupid and just plain great!

I really hope the next GTA goes back to its III roots and has radio like this. Something else that struck me was this LC didnt have Head Radio! That station is a Liberty City institution, what happened R*?

In summary, make GTA radio more like it used to be! III and VC rocked! Great music and hilarious adverts and chat.

Give them a break, look at the state of modern radio & the music industry. Nobody could have don't a better job of parodying the current state of either. You can't compare the very best of the 1980's or the late 80's/1990's eras with the last year or so.

Radio X Vs Radio Broker or Radio Los Santos Vs the Beat, for example. Head for head, there aren't as many truly great artists to pick from over the last couple of years. I can name just about every artist/track on those stations even now, I can name just a couple of artists on the gta4 equivelents of any merit in my eyes.

I think this is a result of Rockstar trying to do a more realistic and gritty game, its worked on some levels but on others its left them lacking and the radio being repetitive is less to do with bad musical direction and more to do with lack of variety and amount of content. Also the lack of any dynamic radio like San Andreas which randomly put commercials between the randomly played songs. I fail to see why they couldn't implement that, it would have at least helped to make the limited songs sound less repetitive.

I think this goes to show that a modern setting has many drawbacks, give us the past for the next game please! I think we are ready for some 70's action!

Im not really talking about the songs they have on the radio. Im more talking about the humour of the adverts and the DJ chat. III was a lot funnier, and I know that IV is going for a more realistic, gritty feel to it but GTA is still about the humour and I think that IVs radio fell short of III in terms of laughs.

Some of the stations are looped so there aren't any commercials on those, such as Electro-choc, The Beat 102.7, The Classics 104.1 and Massive B Soundsystem, which adds to the flow as the tracks are cross-faded in a specific order.

I think the more "classic" songs the better though, which is why the Vibe 98.8 works the best in my opinion as it has commercials, the tracks are shuffled, and it's a great mix of old and new which is more like a real radio station playlist.

LRR 97.8 has such a large playlist that it never fully plays all the tracks before it starts repeating them again in another totally random sequence replacing some tracks it just played. I love this station because it's just great music, most of which is from the 1970's and 1980's which goes some way to validate my opinion that crime and music today is not as varied as it once was (discounting white-collar due to technology). Rockstar even says at several points through the media during the game that this period in no certain terms is traditional organized crime's death knell.

I also wish the DJ's themselves had more control over their bits. It seems like it's dan and lazlow talking instead of Iggy Pop or Roy Ayers for example, which is a shame.

Stop your whining, we get it you don't like IV so go away, most people do and this radio is probably the best radio in GTA series it is either IV or LCS

Well the reason the radio loops so much, is at the expense of a lot of other stuff. There is only so much that can fit on a disc.

But yeah, the actual soundtrack is crap. There are some great artists on there, but they could have used better songs from the same artists.

If you want realism, deal with the trials and tribulations of living in the U.S.

The only thing I don't like is the looping glitch. I love the soundtrack of most of the stations. I also hate the chat shows, they have realy short shows on them. It's always Lazlow with the hotdog guy or the internet guy.

I agree with the part about putting better songs in, instead of ZZ Top's "Thug", it should have been "Legs".

I dont think the radio was terrible it just didnt compare topast GTA's. The radio stations werent as fun and as reconisable as in the past, i used to be able to tell what station it was by the song but in IV i still have to look to see what station it is on.
