essexmat
OK, so I have now finished the story mode - stats tell me that I done this in under 30 hours. I am also not one to go for extra % as I do not see the point - to me the game is about the story and nothing else. So, what did I think of it? Well, it was good, but good is about as much as I will give it. The game certainly did not come close to all the hype surrounding it. I liked a lot of the missions but I'd say that only a few spring to mind that were actually what I call 'annoying/difficult'. There was also no real variety, most missions were 'go here' 'kill him' etc - no timed missions, nothing The airport was useless - no planes to fly The jail was not open for exploring or missions Happiness Island was wasted - nothing to do there at all A lot of places were not 'free roaming' in terms of being able to enter them The map was too easy to open etc etc I am sorry to say that although I enjoyed it to a degree I think Rockstar have been very lazy with it and could have done so much more. I am also afraid that the game does not touch GTA Vice City or indeed San Andreas which I thought were much more fun and had a lot more exciting missions. 6/10 for GTA4 from me - lets hope, should there be one, GTA5 is a lot better and well thought out. Cycleswithin
As for the timed mission comment, I'm glad that there were none as IMO it is bad game design, and almost always annoying.
drpunk
Review echoes my sentiments pretty much word for word Although I'd probably give it a 7.

Shiggety
Great. The argument that there is no variety is not valid. Yes, you must kill many people but UNLIKE SA, you DON'T have to kill them in the way the game asks you too. In IV, you can take out your target any which way you choose. The jail is open for exploring. Use a helicopter/climb on a truck. Happiness Island is a great place to rampage and important for multiplayer and pigeons, as well as a great visual treat. The airport is great fun to stunt around and again, fun in Multiplayer. If you think delivering the best next-gen game yet is being "lazy", then you my friend, are simply stupid. San Andreas and Vice City are cartoons compared to IV and I hardly think they should be compared to each other. If you're just playing this game for the single player, I'm sad to say that you're missing at least 60% of what this game has to offer.
Eddie Low Must Die
I'm not a fan of timed missions but I agree with everything else you said. There are only 2 or 3 great missions in the game.I was very surprised most of the landmarks weren't used.I thought for sure there would be huge missions involving Rotterdam Tower and Alderney Prison.I also thought the game was much easier than previous GTA's. jkaa4
I've got to agree with the comment about multiplayer v.s. single-player. There's just so much more stuff to do; it's crazy. I do wish you could walk into more buildings though...
Catalinaslover
Guess they put the time effort into details-animations-physics and that is GREAT for future titles as the animations etc in tha ole games were pretty pretty bad... I did not get into having any fun with missions until...2-3 island, too flatlined, too scripted. Reviews got so high scores coz on the 360/ps3 there aint any other game delivering in the GTAIV league, compared to SA IV is thin on gameplay freeroam activities but multiplayer and the minigames is a nice touch. Coolest designed gameworld so far makes me throw out 9.5 on it.
skytiger666
the problem is the target market for GTA4 is teenagers and they are not very sophisticated it is similar to hollywood - once they figured out that worldwide they make more money from the 12-18 age group than any other the character and story quality dropped right down low they make up for it with graphics gimmicks that mean nothing GTA4 does not feel like a labour of love - and endless urban streets gets boring really fast like too many games and movies they got side-tracked into gimmicks rather than getting the basic good stuff right have you ever left a movie theatre thinking "that was clever" but not "that was good" GTA4 is a "look how clever we are" showcase not a game the biggest tragedy was trading off decent frame rate and detail for gimmicks because that destroys even basic fun like walking down the road this is meant to be HIGH DEFINITION gaming - GTA4 is not high def turn the output down to 480p and you will not notice any difference GTA4 signals the end of an era of video gaming - say hello to large corporations from now on dull dull dull maybe XNA will save us and for god's sake everybody - turn on your brains - do not pre-order !!!! Rockstar totally manipulated the whole world - making sure everybody had to buy a copy to see it ... next time we know better DON'T WE ? if everybody simply refused to buy it (until they knew it was good) two good things would happen: - the price would drop - the quality would go up we paid over $500,000,000 for GTA4 - Rockstar literally saw us coming ... the big question now is - will they patch it up to a reasonable quality or will the conformists simply accept this rubbish so we all suffer and have to accept low quality low frame rate blurry rubbish from now on? Forde
Thats precisely it, maybe now if we don't go pre-order mad, they'll have to up the quality of the next game
shat_kat
I think considering this as the best 'next gen' title is stupid in itself.
BenOfficial
I love it and I hate it at the same time. I find myself still spending countless hours in liberty city even when bored to tears. GTA might not be the hype that everyone expected, but multiplayer definately makes up for some of the missing ingredients. The graphics and gameplay, although not the best, are still pretty damn good. Bored with GTA I went and bought spidey3 and took it back almost immediately. Swinging around their bland rendition of New York only made me want to pop GTA back in again. Liberty City or Bust! oh yeah, and it still gets a 9.5 from me... KristCiaprianni89
Yeah i agree, i think maybe Rockstar focused more on details and reality this time and it's really kool i've just played a few times since i don't own the game (damn money) and it's great on those details, the cars, buildings guns, i find the story a bit interesting, but not as interesting as on previous GTA's. ...Hmmm i never tried yet to go to the airport, then you can't fly any plane? One thing i did liked and find really fun is when crossing the bridge, you have to pay a fee lol Other than that, this game kicks ass and will deffo get us entertained for a few years.
