Safe_Badger
I've been through all the help topics solutions. The disk spinning mouse cursor comes up, then nothing happens. I have deleted Secdrv on the device manager, tried a no cd crack, tried this tried that, no solution. Any help please? I've ran vice city before on this PC, it just randomly stoppped working. I have tried an uninstall and reinstall. ....................................... Problem #11: Vice City will not run after installation - instead, when clicking the icon to start, the Play CD spins and the pointer icon turns into a spinning-CD symbol, but the game never starts (and the pointer may not go back to normal until restarting Windows). Solution: End all running non-essential processes - whether it be an anti-virus, Window Blinds, whatever. This fix has also been reported to work by closing [email protected] and a startup program called "BigFix". Alternatively: If you notice a new piece of hardware called "secdrv" attempting to install itself, Windows may be mistaking some software for hardware. Go to Device Manager and look for a big yellow question mark (indicating hardware with no driver). If one stands next to "secdrv", delete it. Alternatively: Set the compatibility mode of the executable file to 'Windows 98'. Do so by: right-clicking gta-vc.exe (default: C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto Vice City\gta-vc.exe) -> Properties -> Compatibility tab -> check 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:', and select 'Windows 98 / Windows Me' from the drop-down menu. Apply, OK. And as pictures speak a thousand words, click here. Alternatively: Instead of the original EXE, use a no CD crack. Note that providing links to any such cracks is strictly prohibited here at GTAForums.com. ....................................... Tried all of that, nothing worked. gtamodder
Try deleting gta_vc.set (My Documents\GTA Vice City User Files)
Safe_Badger
There is no gta_vc.set in my GTA Vice City User Files folder, however there is a GTAVCsf1.b, which is my current save. EDIT: I mean after the reinstall it isn't there, and it isn't hidden, still doesn't start.
gtamodder
Right click gta_vc.exe, click properties, click Compatibility tab, choose Windows 98/Me, then click apply then ok. Now try running the game.

Girish
Can you use System Restore to go back to the point where the game worked? Also, try cleaning out your registry and then try reinstalling the game.
gtamodder
Sometimes you can fix this by, making a new User Account, and installing the game on there, and it should work fine on that account.
Safe_Badger
Tried reinstalling, didn't work. Tried system restore, didn't work. I may try the new user account thing, but I'm wary about this as last time I tried to create a user account it deleted my main one, and I had to system restore to get out - however that's a different problem. Ryan
So you didn't install anything new or stuff that might affect the game?
brylle
maybe one of your system specs is the problem!
Safe_Badger
I havn't installed anything new, other than gta3 and winamp, but I had them before this was happening, just reinstalled them. I don't know my specs or how to get them, but it HAS worked before. sorry for the long response.
radioman
I don't know my specs or how to get them, but it HAS worked before There are two ways to find your system info. (1) click on start, then "my computer", then on left hand side it'll say "View System Info" so click on that. (2) to tell your graphics and video card, direct x version, and other drivers, click start, run, then type in "dxdiag" without the quotation marks, then click run. Also, please post the required info needed, so we can help you better. When posting a problem, be sure to include the following information about your computer: Operating system (XP users: be sure to mention if you have SP1 or SP2) Video/Graphics card type + graphics memory Processor RAM (random access memory) This will help us to identify the problem. Hope this helps.

radioman
It looks like you meet all the required specs for VC. Have you tried updating your graphics/video card(s)? If not, try that and then delete the .set file and load the game to see if that helps. Also, if you have a second hard drive (internal or external), try installing the game to that and see if that helps. that's all i can think of at the moment. Hope this helps. Girish
How would I update my video cards? Im a noob at this Start > Run > Type 'dxdiag > OK > Click on the Display tab. Here you'll find your driver version. Then just search for a driver update with a version higher than the one you already have. Btw, which graphic card do you have? Safe_Badger
still won't work
gtamodder
Well, the only thing I could think you can do is, re-install Windows. Sometimes if a game won't work, sometimes some find that you need to re-install the OS. However backup all your files if you do so, because when you re-install Windows, your HDD will be formmated. Safe_Badger
Yeah I've formatted before and it worked, however I'm NOT willing to do this. At all. So help would still be appreciated, but I'm not going to reinstall windows as it causes alot of problems. NORTON.

gtamodder
Have you tried disabling Anti Virus? I had trouble where SA wouldn't start unless I disabled it..
Safe_Badger
Do you mean quitting it or allowing it to work or what? I'm going to fiddle with norton 08 now to see if it is blocking it. Then when I get home I'll find my disk and see if it worked. If it hasn't I'll try and exit anti virus. Vice City was on Custom. It is now on Allow. As I have said, I don't have the disk to hand. I'll try it when I get back home. Edited July 20, 2008 by Safe_Badger

Hope this helps.
