EasyTiger
Rocky Horror Picture Show. Surprised no one has mentioned this one yet. Also it's lesser known "Sequel", Shock Treatment. I was also suprised to see Rocky Horror Show go un-mentioned, classic film.

manofpeace
I have yet to find someone at my school that likes LoTR, but I enjoy it very much. I've seen a few websites that are fanatic about it, so would it count? As mentioned previously, Commando was awesome.

papanesta
Tarantino films such as: Pulp Fiction, Reservoir dogs, Jackie Brown, Dusk till Dawn, Death proof etc. I aslo think Robert Rodriguez has a cult following with Planet terror. Tarantino wrote From Dusk Till Dawn, it's Rodriguez's film.

One of the most successful film trilogies in history. Really?

OH NO
La Haine, The Warriors, Romper Stomper, Scum...Withnail and I. All but the last one I saw while in a lsd stupor on the bravo channel about 9-10 years ago, all at around 2 in the morning. As I had no tv guide and there was no interactive screen deal to let you know what you were watching and what time it started, all were viewed with a sorta "what..what the f*ck is this, this is f*cking nuts" kinda thing going on. Particularly Romper Stomper, which I think i missed the first 10-20 minutes of and caught just before it all kicks off (dont want to say much and give anything away) anyway, the early morning acid comedown viewing definitely added to the experience, i cant even watch the start of The Warriors without flashbacking a bit (not in a bad way.) I guess a lot of people have seen these nowadays, but I highly recommend all if you havent..and you really need to see La Haine before you get out of your teen years imo. just thought of another one I saw fairly recently.. "Chopper" based on mark chopper reads antics. Great film, eric bana is excellent in it.

I agree with you on LOTR though. Yeah... Tarantino is one of the most successful directors of the 90s, Pulp Fiction is regarded by everyone who has seen it, as an absolute classic and pretty much everyone HAS seen it. His movies are not cult in the least. Just because you know people with no taste in movies, doesn't change a film's popularity for the rest of the world. Canofceleri
Eraserhead is a great cult classic, as well as Rocky Horror of course. I just watched Troll the other day which seems like something that would have a small cult following... real campy, funny movie. There are a few great Cronenberg movies too that seem to have a cult status... Scanners, Videodrome.

Scarface187
No-one has mentioned Blade Runner here! Awesome movie! I keep forgetting that that movie is actually a cult classic cause I've always thought the movie was more popular than it actually is. Great movie. Oh so cult is a personal thing is it? Gimmie a break. It's not any more personal than the genre of a movie. If it's really popular or has huge critical acclaim coming out of the wazoo, then it's not cult. Tarantino movies have BOTH those things. Donnie Darko was really culty until it exploded in popularity a year or so after its release. Same with Shawshank Redemption and Blade Runner, which MIGHT still be considered a bit cult, but come on, it just got a 5 DVD release and a brand new restored cut... how cult can a movie be when it's selling enough to warrant that? It's hard for movies to be cult these days, with the internet, word spreads quickly of underground classics, Fight Club might have been nothing more than a cult classic if not for the internet. Certainly outside of the internet Kubrick movies are still pretty cult. I'm thinking more along the lines of some of the movies that have been mentioned like the Evil Dead trilogy, Night of the Living Dead, Escape from New York, La Haine (which is amazing), Three Kings, etc. I mean, honestly, it's not that important, it's a meaningless term, a movie being cult or not doesn't make a difference at all. But when stuff like Pulp Fiction and Lord of the Rings are being cited as cult... something has to be said.
DemonKing
Yeah man I get your point there, Hell I never said LOTR was a cult film, that's as far from as you can get. But yeah Escape fron N.Y, and it's sequel, Are definetly cult films, And N.Y is amazing, I haven't seem the sequel though. Evil dead films are awesome as well, Plus I rarely see anyone who knows much about them at all. But come on Clockwork Orange is hardly cult now is it? I mean every man and his dog knows about it. Most of Kubricks other films such as Eyes wide shut, Full Metal Jacket etc are pretty cultish, But I wouldn't say either the shining or Clockwork Orange was cult. But as you said the word means pretty much nothing to be honest. I'd still buy a film if it wasn't cult, Doesn't mean jack squat to me.

I reckon Full Metal Jacket has a more mainstream following than 'Orange'. When I mention the film around most people, they have no idea what I'm talking about. They all know Sgt. Hartman, though. I think your comment about the term 'cult' being meaningless is apt. It's too vague a term. There are certain films which definitely fit the accepted definition, but others fall into a much more 'grey' area.

meta187
"Waking Life" by Richard Linklater is one for sure, I'm the only person I know that's seen it but there's alot of fans out there that know most of the dialogue off by heart.....I'm getting there I'm a huge fan of Waking Life, was just making a recommendation to view it at a writer's meeting the other day to others. And yes, a "cult classic" is a movie that didn't necessarily do well commercially or at the box office but picked up some steam and some avid fans over the years since it's initial release. Say something like "Little Shop of Horrors" with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin or the f*cking awful, Peter Jackson muppet orgy, "Meet the Feebles". But Back to The Future was one of the most commercially successful franchises of the 80's, so yea, big difference. Accessibility, as Widow pointed out, is kind of dwindling down the term to non-use. There's a fan of just about anything posted on the web nowadays, in fact a couple of hundred thousand in some cases, so "niche viewing" is more difficult to determine and define. ~ Studio: Q-13 Lounge / Q:13 Warrior Tunes / Interweb Chex Mix, yo.~
willgtavcs
Th evil dead is the best, mos creative, F#cking awesome, cult film ever made. So are its sequels. the olny thing i have against it is that sam raimi, made the entire first film into a mere 6 minutes in the evil dead 2. if he didnt do a "previously" thing in dead by dawn, it would have been fine. but seeing as he couldnt get any footage from the previous film, he decided to completely change the entire plot, and fit it down to 6 minutes. other than that. this is easlily the best trilogy ever.
