.Up&Coming.
Oh boy. I stopped after, "You can't even punch cars!" Yes you can. Try harder. As for the falling off cars, blame Euphoria. Would you rather have effects like SA, or Euphoria? Your choice. I stopped reading it... The thing is, games are going to start getting more and more realistic with these new consoles. R* can't just give us great graphics, and then give completely unrealistic abilities. It just wouldn't make sense. Realism has to be there, unless you want cartoony graphics. Life-like graphics + Cartoony stuff like animations, abilities, etc. (yes, I edit my posts a lot) would not mix in my opinion. I'm tired. I'll read the rest another day. Nice contribution, though. bochen74656
Honestly I gotta tell you reading these boards..there's WAAAYYY too much discussion about the game being more 'real' and more 'mature'..you got all these 'realists' who are using the now infamous 'more real' excuse for everything that this game lacks compared to previous GTAs.."oh well it's okay, it's more real; it's a more mature game' GIVE ME A BREAK! When things get more 'mature' that's usually the beginning of their demise..TV Stars/Music Stars/Actors/Gangsta Rap/Sports, time and time again you can track their demise to the time when they got quote more "mature." I am totally disappointed in this sequel..totally and UTTERLY..and here's why..I submit a more fair and balanced review of the game than some other people have given it..naming both the good/bad things, but this game definitely --> more BAD in my opinion.. Now for starters, here's a couple things that I haven't seen anyone mention..these are small things I agree but that's why GTA was so awesome..there were so many small, insignificant things you could do in previous GTAs that made them so much fun even when the missions were complete..you hear people whining about it being boring after the missions well there you go..here's a couple things: -You can't beat up cars with your hands anymore..again a small thing, but it was being able to beat the crap out of a car, knock all the doors off, break the windows, lights, punch the hood off eventually and totally demolish it..in this game YOU CAN'T EVEN PUNCH A CAR!! It was hilarious in previous GTA's you'd punch someone's car and they'd get out pissed lol..in this game Niko attempts a "push" on the car LMAO GIVE ME A BREAK! -You can't ride on top of cars anymore without falling off..blame this on the REALISM! lol..yet another reason why the game lacks in actual GAMEPLAY due to the need that it's more 'real'..of course a dude aint gonna be able to stay standing on a car for 35/40 mph without falling down but who gives a rat's ass..it was FUN riding some random pedestrians vehicle, watchin' them start speedin off meanwhile you're on their hood doin drivebys on fools lol..but hey who cares about fun because this game is more REAL!! -I know I know but I'm gonna be another dude who cries and complains about not having tanks...and another reason why this game isn't near as fun as the other ones..don't come CLOSE...how many times did you and your friends take turns trying to last to 6 stars and ultimately get a tank? That was like the main goal and fun as hell..here you get 6 stars you get helicopters and N.o.o.s.e...not very fun anymore.... And this is a BIG ONE for me: -Everyone on the highway in GTA IV goes like 40 mph..this ain't REAL! In SA, dudes were goin' like 80-90, hell 100mph on the highway..dudes were FLYIN'..how fun was it to take a car down the wrong way of the highway in SA, jump out and just watch the cars pile-up in these 100mph crashes, there'd be cars sometimes flying in the air for a few seconds, it was pure chaos...and amid all that you toss a grenade in the mayhem and bam you got like 4 stars right away..it was so much fun to cause chaos on the highways..this game has taken that away from us..and yes my friends, yet another reason why GTA IV lacks in fun.. -All you get as you progress in terms of safehouses is a bunch of apartments..big deal..how bout a car dealership, your own AIRSTRIP like in SA..no garages to store your favorite cars in...defintely has taken away from this game...in fact I would say that the last safehouse you get in the game is even worse than the dump you had when you start because you have to go in the lobby and wait for the screen to load till it gets you upstairs in the penthouse or whatever..atleast in the dump safehouses you could run up and save right away..it's actually worse!!! -You can't storm police stations anymore..how fun was that to storm the police station, get to the inner part of the building where the cells were at..now that was fun and woulda been even more funner on multiplayer in GTA IV...again - this is another example of why GTA IV isn't that fun after the missions are complete..they took out most of the fun stuff..havin' hydraulics in the game was taken out..that was fun runnin down a pedestrian then jackin' the car up and down on top of them in the middle of the street..a small thing but one of many, many reasons why GTA IV has disappointed me... I got a bunch of other gripes such as the fact that you can't cross a road in the game anywhere even when traffic is slowed down to a crawl near a traffic light without getting run over..everywhere you turn on foot you get run over and top that with the fact it takes FOREVER to get back up..it gets annoying and FAST! but hey..let's just spend most of our time looking both ways before we cross..that's more REAL....to hell with the FUN! Because this aint a video game right? Everytime you need a taxi in the game there aint noone there..why is it that in multiplayer you spend most of your time running and looking for cars? this is ridiculous..was there not ANY feedback from beta testers regarding this? I'd be embarrased watching someone beta test GTA IV and running everywhere simply looking for a car if I was a developer..i'd say we have to fix this..this aint fun at all..makes ya just wanna turn the game off.... And what's up with the storyline in GTA IV? I've heard people on here sayin how great the Niko character and storyline is but I just don't see it, I'm sorry! He runs around for the first 75% of missions as an errand boy...the only thing that changes is who gives him the orders lol....the story don't even develop till the last 25% of the game..and there ain't even a feeling of achievement when the game is beat..in SA, CJ worked his way out the ghetto was eventually rewarded by goin' to the San Francisco-like city..that was cool you got in a real city, airport then worked your way to your own airfield then eventually were rewarded by gettin' to the las vegas-like city..there were REWARDS in the game..it was fun..in GTA IV you can randomly place someone at any point in the entire map and unless you put them by a significant landmark like Happiness Island/Airport/Strip Club/Times Square, they wouldn't be able to tell you where they were because when you unlock the islands you get MORE OF THE SAME..just a bunch of city! In SA you knew exactly which part of the map you were in..it had character..when I opened up the two islands in this game I was like big deal..i didn't even bother checkin' out the city, it was again - more of the same..no rewards at all..no feeling of accomplishment in this game.. I liked the gangsta rap/black guy from ghetto rising up theme..I know it was used up..but I liked it and felt SA did well..plus the soundtrack in SA was AWESOME..they had CLASSICS in there..in this game I could care less what's on the radio even on the Beat 107 channel..I think they should have stuck to classics on the radios..it seems there's too much new music on here noone's heard of..that's why GTA was cool in the past, you'd get in a car and hear classic after classic.. Don't get me wrong..i still thing GTA IV is one of the best games on 360 right now (no not the best) but one of the more solid games on the 360..and if there were no GTA's released before and this was the first one released I would probably hail the game as a masterpiece, but not now..not when they tried to follow Vice City and SA with this?? If they hadn't made such great games before this there would be nothing to compare the game to, but I expected more especially after what 3 or 4 years of wait? How about some new cars? New weapons?... Things that I do like about the game: The warning system radar..it makes more sense to escape the general area of your crime and get far enough away the cops can't find you..that just seems to make more sense to me and I like it a lot better ...but...it seems like sometimes it's impossible to get rid of the cops even with a simple 1 or 2 stars...sometimes the only difference between a 2-star level and a 6-star are helicopters/FBI..they got a cop waiting at the end of the 'warning area' no matter which street ya take sometimes..I'm sorry but a 1 star should be a piece of CAKE to get out of..2-star pretty easy and progessively harder..i ain't sayin it's tough to get out of a 1star but sometimes it seems it's a little ridiculous when they got a cop car conveniently at the end of the radar area everytime.. The graphics in this game are obvoiusly amazing, I would say ingenius at times when the light hits the water just right and like I said I happen to like the pastel effect on everything I think it's cool as hell..I love how you can take a cab to get everywhere fast and I gotta say being able to use the waypoints to map your route is definitely a great idea.. All in all it looks like the 'realists' and 'mature' people took over this game..and it seems like there's nothing you can do to appease these people! So long as it's more 'real' and 'mature' then that's what's important..not actually having fun playing a video game right?? Let's make it more mature! lol..a classic example of this is how the driving system was TOTALLY ruined in this game..gone are the days in SA, Vice City where you could come speeding towards a turn at 80 mph, slam the ebrake quick, take the turn at 45 then fly back up to 80, the whole time you did a perfect turn at a traffic light in-between two cars waitin on a red light..that was HELLA fun just to drive in SA..this game you have to slow down for the turn then ebrake to make a good turn..you're lucky if you top 25mph on the best of turns..at first I couldn't stand it..have gotten used to it and can drive pretty good now..but just cuz i'm used to it don't mean I have to like it....now we can get into the mechanics and specifics of how a car would 'really' turn a corner and we can even let the realists have their way and say fine it's more real in GTA IV..but one thing's for sure..it AINT FUN..drivin' aint FUN like it was before... Everything that was taken out of the previous GTAs and not put into this game can be taken as a direct result as Rockstar wanting the game to be more real..and this is why this game ranks 3rd in the best GTAs (#1 SA, #2 VC)..in fact they got so real with the game that's it's just not fun like it was..I just hope they wisen up and don't get even 'more real' in the next one or we can kiss this game goodbye in terms of fun.. Hell if you really want to make this game real let's do it RIGHT..why mess around with mostly real..let's go for it 100% baby...let's let the REALIST win guys..let's let them get their way....so real in fact that in the next game when you die from the usual GTA death (gunshots, blown up, run over by a few cars, etc.) you'll be locked out of the game until Niko recovers from the hospital..considering the way you die in this game, chances are he'll be in the ICU for anywhere from 6 months to 5 years..and let's not hope he's in a permanent coma for years upon years.......so since the game is so real basically what will happen next is you'll just have to load up the game every few weeks to see if Niko has come out of his coma..even then it's gonna take months of rehab and let's face it he may never walk again but it's real baby..you'll be tryin' to do missions in a wheelchair and a hired driver..you'll think you're stuck in some 'Driving Miss Daisy' game cept it'll be Driving Mr. Niko...but how cares..cause then IT'S REAL!!!!..and there will be absolutely no re-loading a previous save...because that's not real you can't just load up a previous save to get your ass up out of the hospital..NOONONONONONO!!! you'll be locked out of previous saves until Niko recovers in the hospital... ...and guess what? after your sorry-ass waits for 8 months turning on the Xbox every few weeks to see if the jerk has come out of his coma yet you'll come to find out he's passed away..maybe if we're lucky we'll get an animated cut scene of the funeral...what happens next? - all previous saves ERASED..cuz there aint no comin' back from the dead, that's not real!!!!!! lmao Whoever lasts long enough to complete the first mission will hold the record at Rockstar Social Club for YEAARS to come...meanwhile we got 50 million people hopin' and prayin' niko comes out of the coma in a few weeks.. And just to add some more controversy to this post I'll end with this - I support GTAADDICT4EVER 100% when I say this - OWNED!!!! STY Anti-Realist ...I want the REAL GTA back...not this... Hey I feel you man.. Even though I don't agree with anything you have posted... I mean I UNDERSTAND what you have said, but tell you the truth personally I LOVE THE REALISM... In fact I'm PISSED that it wasn't MORE real..... I have the 360 version and finished the game, great game, def one of the best in 2008 if not THE best. I have never played any other GTA. Found it too childish... What caught my attention to GTAIV was not its gameplay, but the OPEN WORLD, the graphics (which are pretty good considering such a dense and large city with virtually zero load times, etc), and the Euphoria Engine, Physics, NaturalMotion, AI of the NPCs, etc.... IT's the whole Matrix/Holodeck/Virtual World that makes GTA4 such a great game for me... I am so *PISSED* that because of economic reasons (market forces, piracy, etc...blahblahblah) GTA4 wasn't designed FROM THE GROUND UP for HIGHEST END GAMING PCs (instead of 360 and PS3, etc) where DISC SPACE would not be an issue... So we can get GTAIV maybe say 100GB game instead of measly 6.5GB!!!!! I would love EVERY inch of every room detailed... Every room of every floor of every building rendered and fully implemented to be LIVe and alive and realistic and breathing and real and immersive and interaction and fun and dynamic and realtime, etc... Every citizen UNIQUE in facial features, history, and have a memory of the past... etc... To have real FBI detectives that investigate crime scenes (instead of dead people simply "vanishing" ) that are put on cases that eventually close in on your character who is more or less a mass serial killer.... People can fall in love in the game, and make babies... (pop. count of LC increases) People can get killed and then you see their name added to the graveyard - Pop. count decreases You can woo and court ANY attractive female in the game for LONG TERM relationships.... You can start a family with them, marry her and move in to a nicer house and find a better job to pay the rent... Then you see her tummy grow larger and as 9th month come you prepare to be a father and can name the new baby.. You go SHOPPING for a stroller, for diapers, for baby formula... Years later you send your kid to school... they grow up to look like you and your wife... etc.... I wish the game was more realistic like this... I wish we could fly the Boeing 747 and learn to become a real pilot like for example check out the PMDG 747 addon for Flight Simulator.... 99% of all real life 747 functions in the cockpit are simulated.. I wish we could go on a cruise ship or better yet start a career from sailing a small ship work our way up to become captain of an oil tanker or whatnot... See "Ship Simulator" to get a feel for what I am talking about... And if we wanna go into politics we can run for major of Liberty City or police chief and then MACRO manage liberty city such as like in the SimCity... And after work we go home and see the wife and kids and we switch to MICRO manage at the family unit level such as The Sims but the transitions are "smooth" and seamless... Not only do we have "real relationships" with other characters but the characters themselves have interconnected web of entanglement relationships with each other! For example you can meet someone through the friend of a friend... etc (six degrees of freedom thing???) and you can hear news from what happened to a person from other people's rumors etc.... So each character in the game (even NPCs) have real life relationships and mood swings up and down depending on many factors such as their job, their interpersonal realtioonshiops, money, house, fame, success, luck, etc.... So instead of going out with one person at a time you can arrange a party and invite everyone you know! And that might cause your friends to form new friendships both platonic, business, romantic, etc... The possibilites become natural, organic, and endless! You can even be a matchmaker! So one day you can tell your nephew how their parents meet and it was your handiwork! etc... people can cheat on each other and you can order a semen kit and test it for other mens semen... There should be microscopes in the game that can see down to the cellular and atomic level... and you can call cheaters on your wife and and weeks later see it broadcasted while watching TV! On the other end game must include a telescope and OrbiterSim like fidelity of all the correct locations and orbits of moon, planets, sun, stars, galaxiess.. so if you play the game or fast forward another 4 billion years the sun will burn out.. wait another 100 billion years the universe itself will either big crunch or atomics will decay back into radiation. etc Edited May 27, 2008 by bochen74656

STY I think the realism is great. You just have to make sure to dodge cars, and drive well so that you don't go through the windshield, etc. Maybe it's how you play? I'm not trying to sound like a jackass, but...it's not that hard if you know how to avoid the annoying realistic parts. I do agree that they make the game much better. Without it, I wouldn't like this GTA as much.

100% agree with pretty much everything you've said here. Nothing to add really, you've pretty much echoed my exact sentiments regarding IV. Dolemite500
I agree with you about tanks, the graphics and the police wanted system. My disagreements I love the soundtrack I love the realistic car handling I love Euphoria which is what knocks me off cars I love the fact that I can drive on a highway without having a tractor also doing 120 miles comes and messes up my sweet ride If I can't find a taxi I love the fact I can call up Roman (with the exception of a short period in the game) and be picked up by Mohammed while he insults my whoring existence on earth. The story you seem to dislike so much, is not a story per se, think of it as a Scorcese film. There are plot devices (special someone, American dream) that set you on your course through the sick and twisted world of Liberty City. It's a character study at it heart, not just of Niko either, they flesh out six charcaters and they do it brilliantly. And yes Niko is an errand boy, because he badly needs money so he needs to run errands to get money. The assets that were prevalent in the last two installments were left out because they wouldn't feel right that an illegal immigrant could rise up tony montana style and own a city. It didn't fit what Rockstar was trying to accomplish with this new direction. You will counter by saying I have 700 grand and nothing to do with it, while in San Andreas which you love you could have had a billion with no cheats and your doing "errands" for OG Loc. In closing I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your GTA IV experience as much as you hoped for.
rozachi blue
I agree with you. I love this game but the "realism" is a bit too extreme. To me it feels like instead of R* starting where they left off SA, they started where they left off with GTA3. If you think about it, there isn't many good things they kept from SA. Good things they kept: Clothing changes, Food buying, Motorcycles & Choppers, Swimming, A talking protagonist, Girlfriends, Non-mission related Activities Things they should have kept: Customize more than just clothes, Swimming under water, Fun vehicles(Tank, Bike, Parachute, Planes, Jet Pack, Vehicles with usable parts), Definitive gangs that actually served a purpose besides dressing alike(they even had them in GTA 3), Different fighting styles, More weapons(SA has 36 and IV has 15). I'm sure there is more but I am tired of thinking about. I just hope that the next game goes back to its roots because Saints Row 2 is on GTA IV's heels and this just their second game. Either way I love them both.
GTA3Freak-2001
Just look at what you posted, majority of your gripes with the game are in comparison to past games now is it that hard to understand GTA IV is a different games to past GTA's? Can we stop looking at the past, if we kept that up the series would go nowhere and we'd be given the same thing with a fresh coat of paint every time and that would get old quickly. Rockstar have tried to do something different and while I think its good I do see that in the process they have sort of lost some essence as well as possibly some fans who are not happy. See the change as a sort of testbed for future games that will possibly give us the things we miss as well as adding things that rival the old stuff. Yeah some of your points have merit, those things may have been fun, may have been contributing to the games replay value etc. but we have to move on and see what happens next. We've got the DLC upcoming and hopefully that may give an insight into what is next for GTA as in the direction they want to go.

I found ridiculous that this great piece of sh*t, CJ, had all the SA state at his hands. I mean, he was a f'n ghetto "gangsta". He was no Tony f'n Montana, no Tommy f'n Vercetti. One of the reasons I hated SA, but, oh well... Real Mafia and gangsters FTW. I can't say I agree with the topic creator, because I think that this game's incredible, specially after SA, wich I really didn't like (and c'mon, I have the rights to do so. I'm sick of the "ZOMG sA ws da BeST!!11!!" comments on me). But I get your points in the realism vs. fun gameplay, though I still prefer realism. It IS fun, IMO. Personal opinion. wretlingrock392
On the other end game must include a telescope and OrbiterSim like fidelity of all the correct locations and orbits of moon, planets, sun, stars, galaxiess.. so if you play the game or fast forward another 4 billion years the sun will burn out.. wait another 100 billion years the universe itself will either big crunch or atomics will decay back into radiation. etc most of that is in a game... its called the sims
Gog
Not one of the things you mentioned I can agree with, except safe houses. I would like to be able to use the $900,000 I have left to buy something. But other than that, nothing you are missing from the game was anything I did or liked doing. GTA IV is the best GTA to date. The new features more than make up for the loss of a few useless things.
