*gta star*
Well, I've recently had to upgrade my computer. My last graphics card burnt out lol (Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT). So for £97 or thereabouts, I bought an XpertVision 9600GT 512mb. I'm just actually wondering is this a good card? Does anyone have one and is it capable of running games on high settings. I also got a ThermalTake ToughPower 750w PSU to go with it. Any replies are appreciated, thanks in advance.
anus
It is a good card. I don't own one, but from what I've seen it's quite a good performer in games. Would've been better if you had gone for a 8800GT though.
*gta star*
Hmm, not sure about that. 9600GT is a newer card afterall, I've heard its better in ways. Any benchmarks?

You can't just look at the names and think '9 is bigger than 8, so 9 must be better' - near every card in the 9 series is an identical or near identical 8 series card with a new name and packaging. They're nice value, though.
Loman
I have also been looking at the 9600, but I am just wondering: It says it is PCI-Express 2.0, what is the difference between 1.0/2.0? Also, can you use a 2.0 device in a 1.0 slot?
Forfit
9600GT is a good card, a bit slower then the 8800GT however it is also cheaper in price than the 8800GT so the price:performance ratio balances out. I have also been looking at the 9600, but I am just wondering: It says it is PCI-Express 2.0, what is the difference between 1.0/2.0? Also, can you use a 2.0 device in a 1.0 slot? I believe 2.0 has faster data transfer than 1.0, and yes you can. I'm running an 8800GT (2.0) in a 1.0 slot.
Fozzy Fozborne
2.0 offers twice the bandwidth of 1.0. However, cards these days can't appreciate the difference in speed, so the difference is nothing or very slim.

Though maybe having more RAM will actually offer a performance increase that a higher GPU clock couldn't. I don't know about all of the 9-series cards, but the 9600GT has 512MB of RAM just like the 8800GT, although both come in 1GB flavors (which is overkill.) But for the most part all of the 9-series cards are G92's just like the 8800GT/GTS 512, except the 9600GT is a slightly slower G94 and the other ones are improved G92's. People say that the current lineup of 9-series are undeserving of the "new generation" because they are still in essence G92's. People expect the true "next-gen" Nvidia cards will be the GT200 (currently reported as GeForce GTX 280/260.) Those cards are expected to be over $600 for the GTX 280, and $449 for the GTX 260. Same ram, Higher clocks, and in the case of the 9800GX2, another GPU. nVidia ftl, They renamed the 8 series to become the 9 series, and the 9900GTX is going to cost a fortune, compaired to the new ATI cards, which should be just as fast. *gta star*
Well, I tried this card out on BF2 last night and I don't know whats wrong. I get black blotches in the distance, but when I scope in on my gun, they go away. Here's what I mean; What could the problem be guys?
Democrab
GTA:SA has a similar problem involving nVidia cards and mipmapping, Maybe try disabling Mipmapping in the driver control panel?
*gta star*
So its nothing to do with the card, it could be the game itself?
Kippers
I got a new computer which includes the 9600GT last week. I can play Crysis pretty good on it, so it's definitely an awesome choice It's also nice being able to shove other games up to high settings and still see them run smoothly even in the thick of all the action, 習うより慣れろ
matthew1g
@ GTA star, I don't know exactly, but I remember my 8800GT suffered the same on COD IV. A driver fixed the issue for me. Do you have latest drivers and all?
SyphonPayne
Yes, do not ever use the driver CD that comes with the card. Always go straight to the nvidia website to get the latest driver. If you've already done that, then that really sucks, and hopefully they will release a new driver sometime to fix the issue.
*gta star*
Yeah, I uninstalled the drivers and re-installed the drivers. I tried to go into game to test it out, got to a window that says 'optimizing shaders' for best performance and my computer crashed with a memory dump error. I'm not happy about that error, I think this could be a key culpret as to what's wrong with my in game graphics. Might not be, but its dodgy and can be a number of things; Overheating HDD Dust in general places, i.e. fans and heatsinks Power Supply Motherboard As you can see, there's quite a few things there that could be causing these memory dump errors. However, diagnostic tests were ran on my computer when my new graphics card and PSU were fitted, everything was stable. About the whole driver issue, its not just my card thats been suffering with this issue. Series 7's and 8's are quite popular and are having the same problems as mine. I've researched and one particular person on a forum managed to find whats known as a 'driver hotfix' for his card, this corrected the problem. He also mentioned turning"Catalyst A.I" back on, whatever that may be. Any help?
matthew1g
Right now I'm using 171.16 X-treme G drivers which work fine for me. http://www.tweakforce.com/ Would try them out if I were you. They might have fixes. ( and also work generally better than nvidia ones IMO)
*gta star*
Well, I've been told that the best drivers available are on the nVIDIA website.
GTA3Freak-2001
Well, I've been told that the best drivers available are on the nVIDIA website. Well they are the best if you want to stick to official stuff but omega drivers are perfectly fine and often have fixes and optimzations not found in NVIDIA's drivers. They are always worth a go and they are fairly safe if you follow the basics of installing video card drivers. If you are still worried about it being the card then I'd suggest you look at the temps of the card in the NVIDIA control panel, you'll find that most card related issues are more severe then simple texture errors. *gta star*
I'm getting this looked into today guys, I'll let you know what the problem is when I actually find out myself lol. Appreciate all the help though.
