baptiste
I was just wondering what you guys though were the most under-rated games of all time. I'm just gonna go ahead and mention Unreal II: the awakening here, because that is officially the most under-rated game ever. It was an awesome game, it was an epic game, it was the most fun I've ever had in any FPS. Ever. The weapons were amazing, it was the game that defined having secondary firing modes for guns, the levels were awesome and the enemies were great and varied. The mission types had some twists such as some defending sequences but true they were fairly linear, go in and kill everything, but who cares? ITS FUN. The level design showed some serious ingenuity from the developers. Fair enough the storyline was kindoff dull but never the less was still interesting and engaging. The boss battles were a new experience every time and requiring a different style of play. Plus the in-between ship sequences where you could just run around and explore you're vessel and talk to the crew added an awesome mini-game type of thing, and if you don't like it, you can skip it. Plus even though I never consider that a big part of any game, the graphics were f*cking awesome for 2003. Most likely the Crysis of today. Sure the lack of multiplayer was disappointing but the long 10 hour storyline with those missions you just wanna do over and over again were enough. The end made me go ape-sh*t but that didn't take away from the experience. Anyway I think that as a random boon on youtube said so perfectly the reviewers were too busy wanking to master Chief to actually review other decent games. And honestly storyline excluded Unreal II was much better than Halo: combat evolved. /rant
Otter
Unreal II was awesome. But let's back it up a bit - it far from defined secondary firing modes. That's been an Unreal staple since the beginning, and I think Quake was the real progenitor. It did, however, have a really cool element where you can defend bases / plan assaults by heading out and actually speaking to each of your solidiers. There were really neat elements to that as well, like building walls / forcefields. One of the coolest things about that game was the Skin World; what amazing level design. I also loved Unreal 1, and the amazing mod (made by the dudes who made Unreal II!) Unreal: Return to Na Pali. Mine is definitely The Last Express. It only exists in the original 3 Disk DOS format, sadly, so it may be hard to get a hold of - but it's amazing. Loved by critics, but panned by the public. The whole game takes place on a train - the last trip of the Orient Express. You're an investigator charged with meeting your co-conspirator aboard - unfortunately, you find him dead, and have to figure out what he was up to. The artwork is amazing; art-deco style illustrations and animation, moving seamlessly throughout the point-and-click interface. The real crux of the game is this: Everything takes place in real-time. So much so, that, if you're not snoopy enough, you'll miss out on vital clues, or, if you dont keep your ear open, you'll miss a vital answer. It's like literally playing in a novel; the characters are rich, the story is incredible, voice acting (it's all VO, and one of the coolest auditory experiences I've ever heard.) is spot on. The only drawback is, the low-resolution imagery and point and click interface feel dated. This game is begging for either an HD restoration, or a complete 3D remake. But - if you can get into it, it's one of the best games you'll ever play.

Alright it might have not defined it, I went abit too far, but the secondary firing modes were pure awesomeness, for every gun. Having not played quake extensively I cant compare. Il have a look at The last Express.
Otter
You should also check out Return to Na Pali if you're a big Unreal fan.
Skyline_Mad
I also loved Unreal 2, and so did a couple of my friends (although that was originaly when it came out, they don't like it anymore cos its "too old"), the weapons were cool, and also the graphics were great when it originaly came out. I remember trying to import some of the huge levels into UT2004 a while ago but could never figure out how too (they both used the same editor, but with a few differences). It wasn't that long ago i last played it, (mainly because a friend of my dads borrowed it off me for over a year and i only just got it back recently, i forgot he had it until one day he shows up with it, he never even played it lol), i've actualy still got it on my desk with my other recent games, but i recently reformatted and havn't reinstalled it yet. I've been a big fan of the Unreal games (although never played much of the story of the original Unreal, mainly on the deathmatch mode against bots), mainly the Unreal Tournament games. [GTA Man]cycon77foamy[GTA Man]
Tony Hawks Underground on PC. Would have been fun to play against others online. maybe cause it was released only in Australia Metal Gear on Game Boy Colour. Was one of the best MGS' Kula World, such a simple concept: Beach Ball + Platform navigation in magical 3D floating levels + Being so f*cking hard = So much fun!!! Sauron
Baldur's Gate and Grim Fandango. Probably two of the best games I have ever played. I also have a boner for FF7 but that isn't really under-rrated.
Maleficus
Hard to say if it was underrated or not, but Evil Genius is definitely one of my favorite games. The gameplay was really similar to Dungeon Keeper 1/2, two other somewhat unknown games. Great graphics for it's day, the retro 60s art style is absolutely fantastic, and the soundtrack was stellar. Plus, any game containing an elderly woman with a flail for a hand is automatically awesome. Don Garcia aka NjNakedSnake
I find the Shenmue games to be pretty underrated. If not so much Shenmue 1, then 2. I dunno, I get underrated mixed with underappreciated sometimes.

chrisisking
Uncharted was definitely underrated. That game was intense! Agreed! It didn't get half the press it deserves and is one of the best titles on current gen machines, easily PS3 game of the year and the best graphical piece of work I have seen on any console. I always thought DOOM 64 was highly underated. Fair enough its not as good as the original episodes on PC and PS1 (what the hell is ?! ) but its the only other DOOM to feel and play like a DOOM should do, unlike DOOM 4 and is a must have for any true DOOM fan. Slamman
Uncharted was definitely underrated. That game was intense! Listen to the 'wuss' who wouldn't even bump his own official thread about said game!!! LAME! That being said, recent press I looked at indicated that Nick Drake's gun is being sold as a toy prop without any license deal! I am not sure on the details so feel freee to add any links. That's all the latest news I heard on it, so I hope it's DEEP in production. That being Uncharted TWO of course!!! The sequel should prove it a game to be reckoned with! As for Beyond Good and Evil, I read there a new followup is in the works...IIRC.
patgrt
What I can think of right now would be Grim Fandango and Sacred. However in Grim Fandangos case it's more about being under-played. Edited July 9, 2008 by patgrt
outcest
I feel The Warriors didn't get enough praise. critics liked it, and it sold well and all, but it's more than just 'good'. one of my favorite games of all time...graphics and petty sh*t like that aside, it single-handedly ressurrected and revamped the brawler genre, added varied missions in fun environments, sh*tloads of unlockable goodies, and of course, brought the colorful, ultra-violent, cuss-heavy world of the Warriors to a video game. Incredible, engaging story with badass characters. just amazing. of course Fallout, Grim Fandango and sh*t like that.

Sounds like you haven't ever played the original Unreal. Am I correct? I've completed it on several occasions, and were thoroughly disappointed by Unreal II - I couldn't even bother finishing it. The whole atmosphere in Unreal was, and still is to this day, one of the best I've ever experienced in an FPS, maybe with Prey as the only exception - that was great, too.
