The choices to kill people don't affect the storyline

I cite SA as the textbook example of feature creep. I'll give R* credit, they apparently listened to the fans, and pandered to literally every damn thing anyone said the series 'needed.'

 

There were a phenomenal amount of gameplay choices at any one point in time, but when you (I) get right down to it, none of them were very much fun.

 

I found most of SA's peripheral activities to be brief distractions, not so much a valid addition to gameplay than a half-baked attempt to add something for the sake of adding something.

 

SA was a schizophrenic mess. Instead of continuing to cram gimmicks and bloat the focus of the game with dozens of relatively pointless additions, R* went back and distilled GTA back to its essentials. I see this as a valiant effort. Go back to the roots and rework the very spirit of the game. Damn near perfect the new formula for the new generation.

 

Then, perhaps in the inevitable sequel, they'll start to play around with new (old) ideas.

 

God willing, they'll take their time, and put in only what works. Make it work well. Not put it in just because they seemingly happened to have the code laying around.

Hey, you can love both games. I do! I'd still give SA a slightly higher rating than IV at this point,

but that will change when a few features are added back to IV.

There are just as many "This is why GTA IV rules" as there are "This is why GTA IV sucks" threads.

The driving physics are worse, the television is boring, the majority of the internet is not interactive for example you cant watch videos on electric t1t, AND san andreas still had more things than gta IV its not my fault if i find the game incredibly sh*t plus the storyline doesnt have to be beleivable it has to be fun and IV wasnt plus FINGERLESS GLOVES!

Go and buy those fingerless gloves in real life if you love them so much!

Anyway, i DO actually agree with you. I am also sick of people complaining, this is the beginning of the next gen GTA's, so people shouldn't of been expecting extreme amounts, but what can you do? Everyone is always going to have their own opinions, and no matter how many good points you bring up, they'll complain anyway.

The things that GTAIV has that San An didn't:

A lot of people (GTA IV fans) say that GTA IV is a brand new game and should not be compared to GTA3 installment. Yet, some people keep doing that.

 

 

(1) The Mobile Phone:

The phone in GTA3 was basic, just to give the game more possibilities (like the phone boots). I have to say I liked the old way which included driving somewhere to start the mission. Some missions didn't consist of practically anything but a long drive. It was simple and I liked it. The new system is OK, but it depends on mobiles too much - calls before and after the mission, text messages. IMHO "human" contact is better. Although, the game is set in 2007 and people tend to use mobile communications more and more.

 

 

(2) Random meetings:

If you are referring to having some quality time with your friends I have to say it sucks, IMHO. All those phone calls from girlfriends and Ceasar (for that robberies every Tuesday and Thursday) was definitely the worst part in SA. Now it's equally annoying. They wanted to expand gameplay but it was one of those features from SA I didn't want to see in GTA IV. For example, if they made some missions (like 3 to 6) for each friend and let that be optional content that would be great. Of course, I don't expect R* to be bothered with something like this.

 

 

(3) TV/Internet:

Nice addon, it gives the game more content. Just like SA had some stuff people miss, but most GTA IV fans say that was pure crap anyway. This is definitely not a tie breaker.

 

 

(4) Better Driving physics:

Absolutely agree. Those that are unable to drive are just lousy drivers.

 

 

(5) A believable narrative:

I don't agree with this one, but I don't want to discuss tastes. For me (and I'm far from being a writer) SA had better story. And by the way, in SA you could have 100 million$ before starting the first mission so I don't think the SA comment is called for. As I see it, CJ got rid of TP because of the havoc TP started in LS. He wanted to compensate where the court system failed. He did it for the hood. But like I said, I'm far from being a writer.

 

 

(6) Graphics:

Of course, new generation GTA new graphics. Maybe they should have fit it better for consoles abilities, there's too much of lag and FPS drops for my taste. Besides, I said it a dozen times, GTA was never about graphics. IMHO, had they cut some details and made the city a bit more interactive it would be better (a more steady frame rate wouldn't hurt either).

 

 

(7) Cover System:

I'm not big fan of auto aim and cover system, but if it's in there like an option, why not. Cover system in GTA3 would just be plain lousy since the physics would not allow it.

 

 

(But I suppose some people would rather get a mohalk haircut)

Like I said, some people would make a similar comment about the (IMHO) dull story line or TV/Internet.

 

 

(8) Realtime(esque) time system:

I don't find this a major factor. Definitely not a tie breaker.

 

 

(9) Mission choices (Spoilers here!) :

I hoped they would implement this and I'm glad they did. Let's hope they will do it properly the next time as (IMHO) this story line leave to much loose ends.

So, GTA IV is flawless? A perfect 10? Also, there was no (fake) media hype which raised people expectations?

I'm getting fed up with people making lists of the things San Andreas had the IV doesn't so I've made a list that these guys should read before posting:

 

The things that GTAIV has that San An didn't: (Not in any order)

 

 

(1) The Mobile Phone:

 

What a great addition! You can now basically run your gameplay from wherever you are on the map... no need to enter yellow waypoints to kick missions/races/oddjobs off... I can't remember how I got by in previous GTA's without it. Also texting is improved.

 

(I know some of you will say how San An DID have a mobile... but it was soooo one dimensional and useless it doesn't even warrant mentioning)

 

(2) Random meetings:

 

Brilliant new addition! It just adds to the whole cinematic style & experience when you can make a break for it and loose the cops and immediately be thrust into a side story mission with a totally new character. AWESOME!

 

(3) TV/Internet:

 

Adds to the comedy value of the game. Adds to the realism of the game (MEDIA OVERLOAD!). And it's a great addition to the missions and stuff... new girlfriends, making interview dates, classic cars finding etc.. I'd say you could add the comedy club to this list, since it's a form of entertainment. It's adds to the realism and immersion.

 

(4) Better Driving physics:

 

I'm not going to flame anyone who prefers the old driving, however i will say that it's a testament to R* that they were able to make, even the most seasoned GTA players, have to re-learn the driving. It just made me feel like I was playing from the very start again.

 

(5) A believable narrative:

 

I'm a writer and I work in the TV/Movie business and I can tell you that Niko's story is not only deep, it's a complete rounded narrative arc that is paced perfectly. Aw man, I can't stress enough how good the story is.

I think R* have (at last) moved onto cinematic territory.

 

(Compare this to CJ's story and you'll see that by the time he hits LV, CJ would have the money, power and influence to have Tennpenny knocked off, also he had no proper motivation for wanting to get rid of tennnpenny by that stage. Anyway, i digress)

 

(6) Graphics:

 

I don't think I need to explain this too much. GTAIV looks 10 times better than San An. But I guess that's not San An's fault.

 

(7) Cover System:

 

This just makes the game a lot more playable and fun. Not only in the missions but in open cop killing rampages as well. Your combat options are just awesome. Firing the RPG while still in cover is one of the most awesome things you can do in video gaming.

 

(But I suppose some people would rather get a mohalk haircut)

 

(8) Realtime(esque) time system:

 

San An only touch on this i.e. only able to start mission at certain times of the day. GTAIV does it for days of the week as well.

 

This again just adds to the immersion factor. I find myself checking what day of the week it is, and making this influence what sort of 'dates' I go on... i.e only go to the strip club or comedy night on the weekend. Head to pool or bowling during the week. etc.

 

(9) Mission choices (Spoilers here!) :

 

The fact that you can choose to let people live or die, or choose between two people to affect the story line is probably the biggest advancement in the game. It's something I've been wanting in the game since I played GTA1. I can't wait to see how they advance this in the future.

 

 

It's too early on monday morning to type any more but I think I've covered all the main points there. There are, I'm sure, a lot of other things to be added to that list.

San Andreas was the best in it's time IMHO but after playing GTA IV , I will never play San andreas again , as for me ,

I remember reading an old article featuring Sam or Dan Houser and he said he was sad because people keep saying "Oh, but GTA isn't about the graphics". No need, mate. I'm a PC fan at heart and can say that if IV does make it's way to PC, it will blow even the PS3 version out of the water in the looks department (cue 360 fanboy napalm attack).

 

TinPotRay: Good points made well, mate. The "random guy in the street" missions are a great idea, as was the phone. For me the ingame TV and Internet compound the concept that GTA is as much about the downtime as it is about lobbing grenades at LC's finest. How often has anyone just fired up the stereo and cruised the streets? More often than not, I'll bet.

I didn't know about this one. Nice addition. Event though, I must say I stay by my initial comment about the whole "friends" ordeal which sucks and only provides for some artificial "extra" hours of gameplay.

you say you dont like this stuff in 4 because it is useless, but how useful is anything in SA. but i do agree, fingerless gloves would add endless hours to the gameplay, and possiby cure cancer. lol jk
