I'm getting fed up with people making lists of the things San Andreas had the IV doesn't so I've made a list that these guys should read before posting:

The things that GTAIV has that San An didn't: (Not in any order)

(1) The Mobile Phone:

What a great addition! You can now basically run your gameplay from wherever you are on the map... no need to enter yellow waypoints to kick missions/races/oddjobs off... I can't remember how I got by in previous GTA's without it. Also texting is improved.

(I know some of you will say how San An DID have a mobile... but it was soooo one dimensional and useless it doesn't even warrant mentioning)

(2) Random meetings:

Brilliant new addition! It just adds to the whole cinematic style & experience when you can make a break for it and loose the cops and immediately be thrust into a side story mission with a totally new character. AWESOME!

(3) TV/Internet:

Adds to the comedy value of the game. Adds to the realism of the game (MEDIA OVERLOAD!). And it's a great addition to the missions and stuff... new girlfriends, making interview dates, classic cars finding etc.. I'd say you could add the comedy club to this list, since it's a form of entertainment. It's adds to the realism and immersion.

(4) Better Driving physics:

I'm not going to flame anyone who prefers the old driving, however i will say that it's a testament to R* that they were able to make, even the most seasoned GTA players, have to re-learn the driving. It just made me feel like I was playing from the very start again.

(5) A believable narrative:

I'm a writer and I work in the TV/Movie business and I can tell you that Niko's story is not only deep, it's a complete rounded narrative arc that is paced perfectly. Aw man, I can't stress enough how good the story is.

I think R* have (at last) moved onto cinematic territory.

(Compare this to CJ's story and you'll see that by the time he hits LV, CJ would have the money, power and influence to have Tennpenny knocked off, also he had no proper motivation for wanting to get rid of tennnpenny by that stage. Anyway, i digress)

(6) Graphics:

I don't think I need to explain this too much. GTAIV looks 10 times better than San An. But I guess that's not San An's fault.

(7) Cover System:

This just makes the game a lot more playable and fun. Not only in the missions but in open cop killing rampages as well. Your combat options are just awesome. Firing the RPG while still in cover is one of the most awesome things you can do in video gaming.

(But I suppose some people would rather get a mohalk haircut)

(8) Realtime(esque) time system:

San An only touch on this i.e. only able to start mission at certain times of the day. GTAIV does it for days of the week as well.

This again just adds to the immersion factor. I find myself checking what day of the week it is, and making this influence what sort of 'dates' I go on... i.e only go to the strip club or comedy night on the weekend. Head to pool or bowling during the week. etc.

(9) Mission choices (Spoilers here!) :

The fact that you can choose to let people live or die, or choose between two people to affect the story line is probably the biggest advancement in the game. It's something I've been wanting in the game since I played GTA1. I can't wait to see how they advance this in the future.

It's too early on monday morning to type any more but I think I've covered all the main points there. There are, I'm sure, a lot of other things to be added to that list.

(Note: I realise I posted this on another thread but I felt it need reiterating!)

I'm with you all the way TinPotRay.

What people have to remember is that this is the new engine and it'll have been hard enough for them to fit all of these features onto one CD.

Once they refine things more and the use of online downloads increases, they'll be able to simply use this game for the engine/physics etc and will be able to add content etc to it, in a similar way to how Vice City and San Andreas added to the GTA III model.

^^Anger: I can see where they'd come from with that - the physics engine is pretty much perfect at this point - it's definitely the best of what is out there at the moment - so adding on and expanding the game is a possible move for R*...

But this is still capitalism, and they will want to make new games, and they'll sell them as such, I think. It's gotta be easier to sell things on shelves than through your console as DLC.

The driving physics are worse, the television is boring, the majority of the internet is not interactive for example you cant watch videos on electric t1t, AND san andreas still had more things than gta IV its not my fault if i find the game incredibly sh*t plus the storyline doesnt have to be beleivable it has to be fun and IV wasnt plus FINGERLESS GLOVES!

1) The physics are more REALISTIC. Better or worse is a personal preference in this case.

2) http://www.hulu.com or a TV near you.

3) http://www.google.com - now THERE is a realistic internet. Doesn't come with instructions.

4) http://www.youtube.com - to make up for what you can't see in a video game (you can do this on your PS3's browser too)

5) San Andreas had more things, but we're all playing IV, even though all the loud people think it sucks. Hmm. Lots of versatility here btw: http://www.addictinggames.com

6) GET SOME IN REAL LIFE AND SHUT THE F*CK UP ABOUT FINGERLESS F*CKING GLOVES, YOU WOULDN'T HAVE NIKO WEAR THE SH*TTY THINGS EVEN IF YOU DID HAVE THEM IN THE GAME! STOP TURNING FINGERLESS GLOVES INTO THE REASON THE GAME SUCKS FOR YOU.

k done.

The driving is not worse dude, they are more challenging and realistic. They make the game harder, but the payoffs are that much greater when you nail the skillful stuff.

The TV and Internet aren't my thing either I'll give you that, but my point is they ADD to the immersion, realism & comedy factors of the game.

The Storyline is fun AND believable, like a well crafted gangster/revenge movie.

I firmly believe (and I may be wrong here but i suspect I'm not) that pointing an RPG around a corner and letting rip with a rocket into a squad car traffic jam is A HELL OF A LOT MORE FUN THAN CYCLING THROUGH 25 DIFFERENT HAIR STYLES.

ALSO: I forgot to put MULTIPLAYER on my list.

although I do see your point san andreas was my first and favourite of the gta games i have played (i have now played them all above 3 including psp) although firing an rpg around a corner at cars is incredibly fun you could do this in san andreas AND it had really cool hairstyles. plus san andreas had SAMP which i knew rockstar didnt create but this was even better than the one they created now.

you could do this in san andreas

Well actually you couldn't... I'm talking about the fancy cover system in IV.

I'm talking about covering behind *anything* and, while still covering, fire a rocket around the corner/over the car or whatever.

You did not need to take cover in SA nor 3, all I did was shoot while runnin.

In SA it was the last level I olny took cover in. Other then that I runnin like a Track-star while gettin head shots XD

Vice City and IV I did tho.

EDIT: Shooting in SA was extra easy (I can't believe yall could not work with it)...it was the flyin and raceing I had problems with.

Oh and another thing, just to clarify...

I STILL LOVE SAN ANDREAS!

It's still one of my fav games...

I posted this because I felt that it needed to be posted. I love IV as well. And I enjoy a lot of the new things that are in this game compared to San An, and there are things in San An I still love as well.

I agree with most of what you've said here, with only a few exceptions.

(1) the mobile phone is a good addition, but you still have to enter yellow waypoints.

(5) it's been a while since I've played SA, but wasn't Tenpenny part of the conspiracy with Big Smoke that led to CJ's mother's death? Didn't he send Sweet to prison? Didn't he and Pulaski try to kill CJ and bury him in the desert? That seems like enough motivation.

(7) the cover system is great. I love it. But who has argued that it would be better to have a mohawk than the cover system? Maybe someone has, but I haven't seen anybody on this forum say that they want the cover system replaced with haircuts. Wanting haircuts in the game isn't the same as wanting them to replace the cover system, and when you say things like this, it only hurts your argument.

(9) I agree with this one, with one exception: when Niko finds Darko, he has a "choice" I suppose, but it doesn't matter what you choose. It doesn't add anything to the gameplay or to the narrative. The result is the same for Niko either way, with a nearly identical conversation between Niko and Roman. I was disappointed with this part of the narrative.

I agree with ya there. That was a very disappointing mission. I played both ways, thinking I had picked the sh*tty outcome the first time. Nope. Equally sh*tty.

Edit to rephrase:

I think a lot of people have chosen to ignore the fun you can have with GTAIV's new stuff, and focus on the lack of other things that seem to me to be a lot less fun.

if you get me.

man the only reason i got sims 2 was so i could create my own character for me and for a lot or kids that is the most fun part of a game except for san andreas which had such an amazing story but also had these features. san andreas had nearly everything i wanted in a game.

I still think SA is much better. The story may not be movie quality, but it's much more epic, and so is the map. I beat Iv's story in under 2 weeks and now I'm getting bored with it. I still like to play san an to this day and I've beaten it 3 times. Plus bike stunting is much easier to do in sa with teh less realistic take on bike physics. If SA had euphoria and Iv's graphics, it would be digital crack. But I know most people seem to side with IV for whatever reason, but it's just not what everyone was expecting, and it let me down a little. Maybe V will be better, but I will definetly be trading IV for SR2 when it comes out. That's just my opinion though. Flame on. suicidal.gif

I pretty much made a post like yours with the same reasons. I agree with you 100%. This is easily the best GTA game so far. EASILY!

There is nothing in SA that they got rid of in GTA IV that was worth keeping. Not a goddamn thing. Planes? Parachutes? Useless. Turf wars? Horrible. Jetpack? Stupid.

Haha. My CJ in SA was this: Tweed clothing, black hat, sunglasses, and black shoes from D&S. No tattoos and a blond cornrow. Before that it was Bingo clothing from the start of the game. The only mods I did on a car was offroad tires (I went offroading a LOT in that game, so much fun).

I never changed his appearance, even though the option was there.

The jetpack was sh*t but everything else ruled there was even a wider range of codes

I don't agree...

All these things were great in SA, but would be as you've described if they were in IV.

I'm glad they don't have these things in IV, but by the same token, i'm glad they had them in SA.

Like I said earlier, I'm not going to Diss SA to make my points about IV.

Both are spectacular games.

The driving is brilliant. In one fell swoop, they've made sure that players can no longer just hold down accelerate and go as fast as they want whilst miraculously never skidding, sliding or crashing any more. As a result, in the online games, ability counts.

I'm an above average driver (no better, no worse), so when playing Cops and Crooks, I can have some Cops close behind me but still feel that I've got a chance of making it to the objective - if I make a mistake first, I'll be shot to pieces. If they make a mistake, I'm going to make some distance before they recover.

The driving is much more realistic and therefore, in my opinion, much better. You finally need to make an effort to learn how to drive and have to not push the cars beyond their limits.

Just one of the many huge improvements in GTA IV.

PARACHUTE

A parachute glides you down once you have jumped from something high this is helpfull because you dont lose health

PLAIN

A plain flies around a bit like a helicopter but better this is helpfull to get from one place to another quite fast

In a Reply to all I've seen in here. I got GTA when it was released on playstation and loved it. My favorite game and every gta since has been my favorite game over any other game I have jetpacks would not destroy the gameplay of IV. Parachutes would be freaking awesome. You do not have to love one and hate another. So flame me with your opinion of a game that has more love and attention from the creators than GTA'''''''''''' ENOUGH SAID and thanks for listening.

I'm glad a few here have acknowledged that both SA and IV are great games.

Now i'm not one for enjoying a thrown in feature just for more features sake, as i never got into any of the taxi missions/fire missions/and even IV's side missions such as the drug missions, are a major bore to me.

And for me it was nice to have CJ pumped up in a week or so(in game), but i never wanted CJ to be obese or not in top physical shape..and Niko is in top shape already.

Also that whole rpg element of making CJ fat, but then you could lose 200lbs in a couple in game days, was very unrealistic.

Also it makes no sense that CJ could upgrade his gun skills in what really is a few weeks of in-game play.

That's also unrealistic.

Jetpacks? Even when using it in SA, it just felt way over the top and not realistic.

Like i said earlier i just never liked any GTA game or clone, to have side missions that had nothing to do with the storyline, it just does not make sense to me if it does not fir into the storyline, and for me is not fun at all.

What is fun, is to have great mission structure, NPC's that have as much of a brain as possible, driving that has some realistic properties, a physics engine that makes the game look/play more realistic, a storyline that is very well done, and in game story characters that make it all have more depth.

SA did as many of these well for last generation and GTA:IV does more of these better because of the new technology.

As you may well tell by now, i love GTA:IV, but i also loved SA, and not for it's over the top features, but rather for it's storyline/characters/story missions/funny voice overs..ect

I never enjoyed the over the top features in any GTA game, and i'm very glad GTA:IV improved the core gameplay, because that improved upon the weaknesses of the GTAIII series.

For me it's about improving the everything in the storyline first and foremost, and GTA:IV has done that the best in the series, by far.

This series was lacking in it's on-foot combat, hovercraft like driving, and weak animations.

GTA:IV has fixed them all up(thankfully), and also gave it a more realistic look(mix of better technology and style) as well, over it's cartoon like look from the III series.

And while i don't like the drug missions of GTA:IV and some side missions, at least the added physics help them play out to be alot more enjoyable, and for the first time in any GTA game, i'm not getting bored out trying to get 100% completeion from it.

The series, as great as it is(the best of any since it went 3D in 01'), still needed an major overhall in it's core gameplay and a more believeable 'world'.

And i'm extremely happy Rockstar seen ity this way as well.
