nlitement
It's called a cult of personality. And I'd be happy to see the survey that says that 60% approved of him So are you trying to say, that in todays Russia (well not exactly, the survey was carried out in 2006) there is Stalin's cult? You must be from Baltic states then, if your family doesn't like him I don't think you caught it: I was asking for the source. And no, I am not from Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania or any other state that had such a weak army they couldn't even defend themselves. We're the country that pretty much owned Stalin's ass, considering the sheer difference in force between the two countries, in all fairness. There's not much more to the stance of most people I know from Russia other than "Stalin was an asshole who killed a bunch of people." There's no particular proactive loathing, just "the old times we went through" (not under Stalin, obviously, but under his successors). I mean, what kind of a great country was East Germany if they had to build a wall to stop people from going into west Germany? I hope you don't believe the East German propaganda that it was the other way around, we all know the truth, especially in retrospect. And I believe that you are a supporter of governments like the one that was in East Germany, hence this paragraph.
Lioshenka
I don't think you caught it: I was asking for the source. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/eu...ime-827654.html http://translate.google.com/translate?u=ht...TF8&sl=ru&tl=en Not the one I saw, but I can't find the original one. The second link is from the official Russian Survey Commitee web-site. We're the country that pretty much owned Stalin's ass, considering the sheer difference in force between the two countries, in all fairness. Can'r really remember ANY country, apart from Germany who "owned his ass" I mean, what kind of a great country was East Germany if they had to build a wall to stop people from going into west Germany? I can't be sure, but from what I heard the wall was built to stop NATO-Warsaw pact war to begin. There were, like, two groups of tanks on both sides pointing at each other so they decided to build the wall. Correct me someone if I am wrong. I hope you don't believe the East German propaganda that it was the other way around, we all know the truth, especially in retrospect. I read in some media, that lots of people in Germany are FOR separation again, West - because they are fed up with supplying money to the East to repair roads and houese and East is fed up with West because they suck their resources and make cheap use of plants etc. Probably it is not such an important issue, but that's what I read anyway. And I believe that you are a supporter of governments like the one that was in East Germany, hence this paragraph. Any government that improves the life of vast majority of country's population while not pressing too harsh on other countries is OK with me. TFatseas
I mean, what kind of a great country was East Germany if they had to build a wall to stop people from going into west Germany? I can't be sure, but from what I heard the wall was built to stop NATO-Warsaw pact war to begin. There were, like, two groups of tanks on both sides pointing at each other so they decided to build the wall. Correct me someone if I am wrong. Wrong, they built the wall because the educated among the East Germans, and a lot of normal civilians were fleeing East Berlin to the west, we are talking scientists, doctors, men of collage education and up, plus many of the workers and farmers, and the Soviets and the DDR wanted to stop them. They couldn't afford lose the "Brains" of the country, or the common working man. The exodus was know as Republikflucht. Between 1945 and 1961, estimated 2 to 3 million left East Germany to the non-socialist states to the west. Thats a lot of people who didn't like the system. Good Source on this. And the tank part, I believe you are referring to the diplomatic incident of October 1961, which occurred after the construction of the wall began in August of 1961. We're the country that pretty much owned Stalin's ass, considering the sheer difference in force between the two countries, in all fairness. Can'r really remember ANY country, apart from Germany who "owned his ass"Finland, Winter War 1939. Look it up. One of the greatest defensive actions by any army(Finland)ever in the history of warfare. Edited June 21, 2008 by TFatseas
Greene
And Northern Ireland still belongs to the British, although that part of Ireland has a pro-British majority. I though the Irish people voted on being free, and say 75% was for it, and the rest was to belong to the UK. Saw that on TV 5 years ago, haven't heard about it since. Wow, I have no idea what show you were watching. I don't think anybody will really disagree with the fact that we had to fight a war with the British (War of Independance 1919-21) before they agreed to negotiate a treaty. The Treaty partitioned Ireland into two states, the Irish Free State which was most of Ireland, and Northern Ireland which was the North/North-East of the country. This caused a Civil War between the anti-Treaty side and the pro-Treaty side, which ended in victory for the pro-treaty side who felt that the Treaty was the best deal we could get without more fighting. As Michael Collins (An Irish leader) said, the treaty was a stepping stone to freedom. And this proved true when we officially left the Commonwealth in 1949. Thats basically just a very short summary of how we gained independence, it wasn't quite as simple as that. Count yourself lucky, I usually get much more carried away when I start talking about Irish politics. Same does China. Whoever wants instability->anarchy->mass killing in the country gets shot. Where as in the non-barbaric countries (North America and Europe) they are not persecuted for their political views. If they're too violent and extreme, they're locked up. Not shot. Non barbaric countries? Thats the kind of attitude that makes all Americans look bad. So you're basically of the opinion that anyone other than Americans and Europeans are a primitive and uncivilised barbaric people? What should we do then? Should we invade and put them right? Teach them the right way? The American way? I see you preaching plenty about ignorance, yet you don't quite realise how f*cking ignorant you are yourself. desert_eagle
I lived in China for a while (Qingdao region) and have quite a few Chinese friends because of that. I love the people and am fascinated by the geography, history and culture of the entire countryh. I absolutely detest socialism, which was only made worse by my time in China and some former socialist countries. But I'm not going to judge a whole people just because of their government and political system.
Lioshenka
hey couldn't afford lose the "Brains" of the country, or the common working man. Ah, OK. Thats a lot of people who didn't like the system. Shouldn't be voting for Hitler then in the first place And the tank part, I believe you are referring to the diplomatic incident of October 1961, which occurred after the construction of the wall began in August of 1961. Yes, that's the one, I did some research, I meant that one. Wherever I read about the Wall it said it all started with military conflict, so they did not explain it fully I guess. Finland, Winter War 1939. Look it up. If he was referring to the defensive action, than I must admit it, yes, they did a good job, but I would be more careful saying they owned his ass, being defeated at the end. Stefan.
Alright, in the past page, the majority of posts in this topic have been about the issue of Northern Ireland, who did better in the Winter War of 1939 between Finland and Russia, and the results of the football match between Russia and the Netherlands. Derailment has just got its meaning back. I respect China; the people are friendly, the culture is interesting, and it has some of the best sights in the world. I don't mind their government (even though I'm democratic); they are strict and close-knit, but instead of people focusing on the negatives of the government, why don't they focus on the good things that China have done? They have strict laws regarding drugs, prostitution and other things which could turn a society into a sinful playground, which I find quite admirable. I actually agree with their involvement in Tibet; these reactions by Tibetans for independence are just a little tactic ployed by America to embarass China ahead of the Olympics. Screw the Dalai Lama.
