Saggy
A country that has survived in consistent form for longer than any other, rich in cultural history to the point of there being simply too much, and a mysterious government shrouded by propaganda; both of its own and my country's. After all, if I believed only what I heard about China on the news, the picture I would have is of some horrifically inhumane country whose entire citizen base is oppressed and the victims of terrible civil and human rights. However, I'm skeptical of that notion, and I've seen more than enough to convince me that China is just a country with culture that is so deep and contrary to the Western world that most of the western World cannot greet it with an open mind. Isn't modern day China going through the equivalent of the industrial revolution that the U.S. went through in the early 1900s? I'm not sure if I'm correct about that or not, but I have talked to a lot of people that live here that have relatives still in China. According to them there's a huge sense in people that a great number of the most long running traditions are taking a back seek to be more like how they perceive the Western world? Anyway, China is really a big mystery to me, because I refuse to really come to a conclusion on it until I've been there, and I doubt I could do so even then just based on how much history and culture there is I've only heard or seen on television or through here-say. Hopefully I'll get to go there one day. QUOTE (K^2) ...not only is it legal for you to go around with a concealed penis, it requires absolutely no registration! Struff Bunstridge
Could someone tell me why when I have been to Chinese neighborhoods in the past, Chinese people have repeatedly blatantly tried to cut me when I'm standing in line at a business? Is this a common practice in China? Yes, and it is f*cking annoying. It is really f*cking annoying, especially when I'm in a hurry. Why do they do it? Don't they know I will just get back in front of them? Jesus, I need to get up to speed with American slang. I thought he meant he was actually getting stabbed up in queues. Bloody Chinese. mark-2007
I like the pictures posted in the other topic of the place you live - it looks lively. I'm sure away from the hustle and bustle and shining lights, there is a starving class of people living in poverty though. I also like that big model of what they're doing to Shanghai, I'll try find a link. I'd like to knock them all down...

Boston and New York Chinatown?? You know anyone in Hung Ching? Chinese free masons and lion dance affiliated groups? Dude you ever been to Chinatown Fair in NYC? One of the oldest and still running arcades in the US. People cutting you in line is definately a racial thing unfortunately lol. It's mostly the Chinese people from a particular province. Not going to mention in case anyone is actually from there and it might offend them. If you visit NYC frequently today, and back in the 90s, you would notice a big difference between the type of Chinese people that are in the area today. Today is mostly people from the Fujian province coming here. A group of Chinese that alot of other Chinese people don't get along with. There is an obvious language barrier, so I mainly go there to walk around and buy cheap goods and services and for other random reasons but not really to chat up and make friends with Chinese immigrants since I can't too easily. I've never been to the Chinatown Fair though it would be kind of cool to check it out sometime. It's racial? You mean they would not do it to a Chinese person? It's a form of condescension against other races basically? I take it you're from Chinatown in New York..?
Prince Drac
Theres three Chinatowns in New York. The major one being the one in Manhattan. Theres one in Flushing, Queens and one in Brooklyn. I live in the one in Brooklyn but used to hang out in the Chinatown in Manhattan when I was younger. You won't see it up front but it used to be an extremely major hotbed for gangs back in the day. Today, most of them are into bootleg bags. It's interesting how their system works. You'll see a woman standing on a corner with a walkie talkie. You approach them telling them you want to buy a coach bag. They'll bring you to a spot that goes down into a basement and bring you through a bunch of passageways and you'll see an entire room of counterfiet LV, coach whatever name brand bags. Hung Ching is all English speaking. Hung Ching translates to Chinese freemasons. If you walk down Mott Street you may see their building where they hold meetings. Majority of today's memebrs are born here. It's the older members involved in the shady business that are old school, but still speak English realizing language is what a businessman needs to expand. Another one is On Leuong and you can't miss their building. It looks like a giant temple on the corner of Mott and Canal Street. It you look up you'll see it. The entrance is a temple looking door with staircases leading upwards. I don't know the exact locatin of the arcade but it's on Mott Street, and if you walk towards East Broadway, you'll pass by it. Theres a citibank on the corner. You won't have a problem fitting in there. Most of the people in there speak English and aren't Chinese. In fact, Chinatown in Manhattan has a large Hispanic and Black population living inside Chinatown. Every Friday night they hold tournaments for particular games. Last time I was there, the most played games were Street Fighter 3 3rd strike and Tekken Tag. Edited May 29, 2008 by Prince Drac
jimmy.
It's pretty interesting how the underground economy in Chinatown works and how extensive the bootleg merchandise industry in New York is. 95% of the things sold on Canal Street are probably knock-offs. I used to work on the corner of Grand and Broadway right at the edge of Chinatown and would observe it coming and going to work. There would always be Chinese women who could hardly speak English who stood on that corner with foldout printouts with pictures of bags on them. People would point to the one they wanted, and then they would be passed off onto another person who would take them to a huge basement down the street. Probably the craziest thing I've seen was a whole family of 5 Chinese people from a 7 year old kid up to an 80 year old grandmother standing together on the sidewalk hustling bootleg DVD's out of backpacks.
