Fighting Tutorial?

Hey Fellas,

I really LIKE fighting in this game, I'm just not good at it, hehehehe.

Anybody mastered it that could give a few tips? How do you perform combos? What is your strategy when there are 2-3 guys trying to take you down at once?

I wish there was a gym or something where you could train and practice fighting... Not necessarily to improve "Niko's skills" but my own. Every time I pick a fight with a random ped, a policeman sees me, or another ped joins in the fight. Suddenly it's 2 against 1. Where do you guys go to practice fighting, or do you just endure trip after trip to the hospital? hehehehe.

Thanks guys, in advance. rampage_ani.gif

Helitour place is best! You can beat like 15-20 dudes before cops are even near! My strategy against many enemy is called batting.

I can't fight for sh*t in GTA IV... actually I can, I just punch until they're dead. I don't use counters and sh*t. I need to be taught how to use advanced fighting techniques.

Pushing is always useful in multi-on-one fights I find (hold punch to push). If you quickly hop between the enemies, you can usually push one or two over do you can have a fair fight with the others. If you sprint before you push it will knock people down 100% of the time. So keep moving I guess smile.gif

To avoid the cops alleyways are usually my favourite, but I like to just take on cops to see how long I last with fists, haha.

You can try to get a random ped between you and a guy that's swinging, and if he connects on the ped, 9 times out of ten he'll break off from you and start scrapping with the ped. Good for distraction. And entertainment.

Countering takes timing. There seems to be a predictable amount of time between NPC swings, so once your opponent throws a punch or two, it's gets fairly easy to time his next. I'm not 100% on the timing of the counter, but it seems to me that you want to tap the counter button when they start to punch, but before they actually throw the punch. If that makes sense.

Some peds have a long wind-up for their swing, making them easy to counter. As soon as you see them pulling back, tap that counter. Others are clearly seasoned pugilists and will really come out swinging fast and often, and aren't afraid to put you on the ground and kick you a few times to boot. These fighters can be a damn pain to counter. It can be done, but muck it up, and you'll be punished. Best bet with fighters like this is to turn tail and buy enough time to pull out your melee weapon. Sometimes being cheap is the best option...

But either way, DON'T hammer the counter button or mash buttons randomly if you want the countering to work for you. There's definitely a strong element of timing to the fist fighting. Too many inputs, and fighting is just aggravating as random whoever just beats you silly.

Combos can be stringed by button sequences on the three attack buttons following the counter. Just experiment, you really can't go wrong, and whatever you push, it'll hurt 'em.

If you're being chased by someone you really do not want to fight, or are hurting enough that you're afraid you might not win, let him chase you until you find a cop. Let the guy punch you in the cop's general vicinity, and now your problem is the cop's problem, and yours no longer. Handy.

Each pedestrian has a pattern to their punches, or even kicks. Some pedestrians can punch faster than others, so you have to know the right timing to block or dodge their attacks. You can defeat any pedestrian without getting touched by simply getting close enough to where you can simply press the punch 3 times (O,O,O on the PS3), step back to where his punches can't reach you as he swings, then move towards him to the distance where you can punch him 3 times again. Repeat until he's finished. Or if you're quick enough, you can start with a kick to the groin (hold the aim button and tap kick) to push him back then close in on him and do 3 punches. Or, you can wait for him to swing and dodge/block it, then counter with a finishing move or Niko's quick 3 jabs. You can also do several counters like dodge/left punch/right punch/360 KO, or you can counter like dodge/left punch/right punch/KO spin kick to the head. Then there's dodge/left punch/right punch/KO uppercut to the head. Then there's the dodge/left punch/right punch/KO mule kick to the body. I wouldn't suggest doing the counter moves in the "friends" mission because it kills the person and some of the friends missions require that the enemy is only beaten up, not killed.

I always like to back out from their 1st punch so they can't do anything to you for a moment. I then keep on punching them in the face until they fall, never punch them on the ground is my strategy, I just kick and kick.

If there's 2 guys fighting you, its best to counter them since it takes half their life away and the next counter kills them. If you're really low on health just take out a baseball for the hell of it and counter them or just beat the crap out of them. biggrin.gif

Oh, a nice tip is to start someone fighting with you, then run near a cop, or call some on the phone. Cops will arrest the person. That can help thin their numbers out a a bit hehe.

i love that baseball bat swinging hobo at dwayne's place, he's so easy to counter.

you duck under his swing, disarm him, then dodge his punch and pop him in the face.

if you learn how to counter, niko is a lethal sob in close range

I can never manage to call the cops with people trying to fight me, he walks too slow, then some guys smacks Niko in the back of the skull, and he puts his phone away! It's ridiculous how you can't at least jog while on the phone

This is so true... The thing I hated the most was trying to call Carmen in the middle of a gun battle, inevitably as soon as I thought I had a safe place to hide for a second, I'd dial the number and immediately get rushed, then i'm walking around like an idiot while people cap me in the face.

Thanks for everybody that took the time to reply, I'm going to practice these moves, especially (Guest), great post man. There should be like, an advice post hall of fame.

The only thing I don't know is how to do the left/right combos you talked about but I'm just gonna keep practicing.
