Help with weird crash after installing mods...

Ok well recently I decided I wanted to go the mod way to play SA so I did a fresh install of GTA SA 1.0.

I installed lots of vehicle and car mods, also some new clothes mods. Well, I load up SA, it shows me the EAX and nVidia screen...also the R* paint logo. After that it gets to the San Andreas screen where there's lots of pictures. And even before loading the loading bar and screen it crashes to the desktop with an error;

"gta_sa.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I've tried many different things, including deleting the gta_set file, restoring the gta3.img and some data and script files to what they were before the mods installed, I've tried running in compatibility mode, etc.

I know it's not my setup or anything because I loaded the game up without mods when I installed it and everything was fine. Only now after mods it crashes.

Please help, what file can be causing it to crash BEFORE the loading screen, even?

Vista SP1

Pentium D 3.2

2 GB RAM

8800 GT

Since you're on Vista, do this:

1) Uninstall SA.

2) Delete the installation folder if it still exists. (e.g. C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\GTA San Andreas).

3) Delete the Virtual Store copy of the installation folder too. (e.g. C:\Users\???\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Rockstar Games\GTA San Andreas).

4) Delete the gta_sa.set file from your user files folder.

5) Reboot.

6) Reinstall SA.

Kinda don't wanna go that route...I know my SA is fine because it worked without the mods like I said.

I'm wondering what can cause the crash before loading screen. For example a specific file (main.scm) or something like that.

Did you not say that the game crashes after the mods were installed? In that case, the way I suggested is the only way out. The virtual store copy holds the information pertaining to your last install. So, even if you reinstall the game without deleting the virtual store copy, the game won't work.

Ok thanks, is there anyway to backup my mods?

Thanks.

umm well you do keep a backup copy of SA with those mods it will probably crash again so it will be pointless.

But if it works with the solutions girishb has given you then i suggest install each mod one by one and if it doesn't work on a specific mod then don't install it again

Hm also I have a question about what you said.

You say that even if I reinstall the game without deleting the virtual store copy, the game won't work.

But I did just that and it worked perfectly...without the mods.

So is the virtual store copy affected by the mods?

Generally, it is. But, in your case, I'm assuming that the game didn't run even once after you installed the mods, right? Maybe that's why you didn't need to delete the virtual copy folder.

As for the mods, if one of them crashes the game and you don't know which one, then it's best not to backup the mods. As iLusion has said, install the mods one by one to find out which one crashes the game.

I noticed on Vista, copying the normal gta3.img over modded one, it's still modded. This doesn't happen on XP. I found you have to replace the one in Virtual store, too.

Your folder options is set to "Do not show hidden files and folders." Change it to "Show hidden files and folders", then it should be there. smile.gif

Ok...what if the Virtual Store folder is empty? I have all the options to show hidden files.

Could it still be a problem with the virtual store even if it's empty?
