Xamot
Sometimes you get sucked in... I always do horrible and die so much more than I kill. Why is that? In TDMs and DMs with the same amount of targets, I do so much better, but in free mode turned DM, I get my ass severely handed to me by 90% of the people there. there are players who excel at Free Mode. i played with one guy (i think his name was DkDirk) who had a weapon route and a sniper's perch all figured out. if you moved to one spot he would always have an exit route... and it was always the same. if you set up your own ambush, this guy would literally wait there all day. i had him cornered on a trash barge because i took out his helicopter... the dude stayed behind cover forever. i even went to take a piss and get a beer, the guy didn't move an inch. ... i had to literally back away and out of range for him to begin swimming for the shore (which i did, because i was getting bored). his strategy was always, go far away, set up an ambush and wait. if you survived the ambush or hit him, he would retreat to a secondary setup. obviously if he was in DM, everybody would just forget about him and find easier targets so his tactics are fairly specific to Free Mode. very time consuming and frustrating to play against him. Coltrane's Muse
Very time consuming and frustrating to play against him. I thank you for the heads-up; that's another player who's been added to my "avoid at all costs" list of "griefers" and dimwits.
Xamot
i do believe that reason why people Death Match in Free Mode is because there is no score, so they can detach their ego from it when they get their asses handed to them and the other people are easier targets than those in real DM. that's why i called it Care Bear Deathmatch, because these people want to kill people without the risk of "losing". and you can't lose in free mode. this is also the reason why if you get 10 consecutive kills on them, or take them out in some kind of excessive manner... like continually hitting them with a bike, repeatedly slicing them with the helicopter while dodging all RPG shots, or sniping them over and over... they'll immediatly leave the match. these people are sore losers and quitters which is why they take joy in firing at another player who is just standing around. This is especially true in "Free Mode" with "friendly fire" disabled. I've garnered hours of amusement from witnessing these fools wasting entire arsenals in their (poor) attempts at getting a kill or two. As is always the case, if their bloodlust isn't sated, they simply move on -- to my elation.
Erados
Yeah, but that's the thing, Xamot. I went to FM all high and mighty thinking these losers couldn't possibly stand up to my honed TDM skills, and I got my ass kicked time and time again. I can't get revenge on them there for some reason. It's just frustrating. If the game kept score, I'm sure my FM kills to death ratio would be easily 1:10. It's just that bad. But on DM or TDM, mostly 3:1 or better. It's pathetic. I can't drive a car worth a crap either. I'm gonna go into a FM right now and get an assault rifle and a sniper rifle and some armor, and then get up to a building and see what happens. Free Mode Auto Aim tactics are drastically different than Manual Aim Deathmatch. you also have to consider, that worst case scenario, it will be set with a Near respawn distance.... rather than outskill them, just get more gear and draw them into ambushes. if you approach it like Deathmatch, you'll probably get bottom fed off of others who respawn ontop of you. it's basically a cycle of kill someone who is shooting at someone else, and then get killed by the respawn of the person they killed.... you have to leave the spawn area and get out of their deathloop. Erados
Yes. Whatever Tiff said. All $500,000 of my TDM earnings if you can tell me what exactly that was. Edit: joined a fairly full FM, got in position with a sniper rifle, rocket launcher, M4, armor, and a heli for escape. Nice low building with no serious "fencing" so I can aim straight down to the bottom of the building. Took about 15 minutes. Everyone leaves. Erados
Some other guy came in, and he was in my line of sight forever - but he wasn't being a douche. Just roleplaying it a bit, driving safely around. So he comes back later, and I'm debating whether to shoot him or not (it was just me and him in the game), and parks his truck and gets out right below me. I'm looking down and all of a sudden I see a flashing light and I hear FWSHHHHH... barely ducked the rocket in time. He kind of stands there looking up after that, and I'm scared to get close for fear of another rocket, but he seems to be done and walks off... then stops in the middle of the road. I take aim at his gut to get him moving again, and almost all his health goes away. He remains still. I shoot him in the head. And again. And again. Half my f*cking rifle clip is gone into this guy's head, but he doesn't die. Does anyone else not like that moment of lag before someone quits where they're invulnerable? Coltrane's Muse
Some other guy came in, and he was in my line of sight forever.... I've a tendency to stalk those who join my "Free Mode" when -- on occasion -- I enable "friendly fire". Many of them go about their business, doing nothing of note, but I find that this is a requisite strategy if the odd "griefer" or two should join. You can usually tell by their on-line behaviorisms as to what their intentions are. Your experience has also taught me that it's imperative to forbid explosives....of course, there are ways around this, such as securing a helicopter. Erados
He didn't hit me, though. He tried, so I tried to kill him, and I had him, but he left seconds too soon. spitty
free roam is strange. this afternoon when i spawned this guy comes flyin down the road and pulls up next to me. i pulled a pistol cuz the natural instinct is shoot, since thats what alot of people do in free roam but instead i just stood there on the corner. so he picked me up and we went huntin for other players, till we died and he quit the game. if there was more players like that i would actually use the headset. a few spawns later i come across a player in a shootout with another player. figured i would help this dude out for no reason, ran up behind him, took cover and started shootin at the this other guy. then buddy i was tryin to help turns around and shoots me. lol this is what makes free roam interesting. i used to shoot at everything that moved but now i would rather cruise the city in a heli or fast car and see what people wanna do before i open fire. wanna go for a ride? lets go for a ride. u wanna have a shootout? lets do that instead. a few big blunts and a city full of players each with their own agenda makes free roam FREE. also, xbox live should be free, should it not? I hear you; I've never "griefed" anyone myself, although as I've stated in previous topics, I have retaliated if need be. Usually when this occurs, they leave -- never to be seen again. The only person whom I've had the displeasure of encountering more than once is a schmuck going by the alias of virus2005. What a headache. He absolutely loves plowing through other players, especially those with female avatars!
Erados
Hahahaha. I died, but I don't know how. I'm still the only guy in the game, but I respawned. I haven't been watching the screen and I went downstairs to eat a second ago. Bah.

This is what I was referring to in a previous retort. Whenever I leave "friendly fire" on -- for whatever reason -- I find that it is important to see what others are up to before joining the fray. If they're running around town blowing each other to hell and back, I tend to keep away from the action; alternatively, if they're looking for some group-based havoc, I'm usually game and will gladly assist them in their exploits. But as for the mindless "Death Match" non-sense? No thank you.

By the way, you'd do well to avoid using the rocket launcher, unless they're well within range and in an automobile; the efficiency of the apparatus has been drastically reduced. Far too much skipping off of surfaces, if you ask me. A major pain in the buttocks.
