Furnace
In SA if you drove / flew to the end of the map for say like an hour, it would take you that amount of time to get back to the island, so i'm pretty sure it's like this in IV. Though once i did the trick of holding the X button down with something, and when i came back to the game (in San Andreas) i was back on the coast, all my fat and muscle gone. I wasn't even at the hospital, i was at the nearest part of land facing the direction i left off. The water outside of the map is different from the water generated inside the island area. With the Gameshark in San Andreas, there was a raise / lower water cheat. I noticed that this only affected the water inside the main land, outside of this, it was the same height. It was a pretty confusing effect, but fun to play around with. Edited May 24, 2008 by Furnace

GTASA_passer
WOW something amazing happened I was flying in an anihalator for about 2 hours with my keys stuck down, and i noticed that Nico was slowly loosing health!!! I died. But this maybey is proof there is map limits? and rockstar doesnt want you to reach them... Yes. That is how they stopped the unlimited water. They knew we would try this

GTA_Emilio
maybe, when ur on the water and ur losing health, call carmen for healt boost or activate the health cheat. dunno, maybe somting will happen if you do that and you can go further than limited by rockstar games
GiveMeLiberty78
Yeah i noticed that too. Took ages to become morning again. and i mean like 1 RL hour Eerie, is it not? I also recall seeing weird orb-like things floating and drifting across the sky (probably supposed to be planes in the distance or something) and despite the fact it was night, part of the sun was still visible (maybe the end of time). Kinda reminds me of San An, where there was always one particularly bright star that could be seen from just about anywhere or falling into blue hell / white hell / whatever it was - kinda loved stumbling across weird stuff like that. _Camo
Why dont you test this theory. Fly for 5 minutes in one direction, turn around, and see how long it takes to get back to the shore? Great idea, someone try this because this may have saved the OP like 2 hours. I can try it later on.
*Clutch*
Its like in SA you fly/sail outside of the map and you can do like that for many houers until you get bored , but if you turn around then it will take only short time to get back.

Like someone said earlier. The Treadmill Effect. You appear to be going foreward. But you arnt going anywhere at all. Thats why it takes a short time to get back
(Guest)
If you go far enough Northeast, you get to the bermuda triangle and Niko get's warped into another dimension.

Carbine23
It's an illusion. The water ends at some point but the system keeps drawing it back and forth, so it looks like that you keep going but you're really at the end. I think this is it. Someone should go really far out for like a half an hour and then see if it takes the same amount of time going back.
jazzillac
SO is it the "treadmill effect" or does it take u the same time to return as u have been traveling out
Uglulyx
And water is not endless. It cannot be. There must be limits to what space they gave up on the disk for it. its the same as San Andreas once you hit the edge of the map the water doesn't keep going it just keeps looping, its an illusion to give the effect that it keeps going. And then you can't get back lol.(once in SA I put in floating cars cheat and flying cars cheat, went out for about 15 minutes and turned the opposite direct on the compass and spent 2 hours. Nevergot back) In IV I heard you just turn around and LC is in plain sight. Edited May 25, 2008 by Uglulyx

MercuryAndy
Why not fly backwards? or better yet try it online and have the players set up a kind of gate system so you can always see 2 players.
PigManDan
I think I managed to get outside the map limits... I started a new game so I could get 6 stars quick (by going over Alderney or whatever) and see if I could escape the police by flying as far away as I could. After a while I got bored and jumped out, looked around to see what direction I had to swim back, but I couldn't see Liberty City anywhere (and when I looked on the in game map, the indicator for Niko wasn't on it). So I decided to swim towards where all the icons were on the radar, and it was like the treadmill effect someone else mentioned, but from the other side. Or it was like I was stuck in the treadmill (it's hard to explain properly). Anyway after a while I guess I drowned or something coz I just gradually died. Should have spawned a boat while I was still in the heli I guess.
Mr_Prickles
Oh, guys, I don't know how to break this to you. The water is generated forever and ever. It truly is endless, it is easy to make today. Water in GTA IV is quite different handled than the rest of the map. But if you feel something's out there, well, be my guest. thats right. theres somthing out there And water is not endless. It cannot be. There must be limits to what space they gave up on the disk for it. If you constantly generate it something will give I think... Edit: if your taking me seriously, ... dont... i know there is nothing out there and water is probably generated forever, I am no noob to map editing. i know the ins and outs of everything. I was just bored so put my wathc on the X key to see how far out i could go.... They did the same thing in SA, did they not?
unoleian
Sheesh. All you have to do is click in right stick while boating away from the city, and watch for the moment it stops shrinking. Bam. There's your wall. IIRC it doesn't take more than 1-2 minutes at moderate speed to hit it. Frankly, I'm surprised someone could boat along for so long, and not look behind them at least once to realize they hadn't gone an inch for the past 30 minutes... sagddesign
If I remember correctly, in SA you can fly to a previous city used in the GTA series, that you can fly to in a mission, but there's a way/glitch to be able to walk around a street in that city outside of a mission. I'm REALLY stretching my memory here though, so somebody will come along with the facts. No u didnt fly to it,. You did the mission. Put a cheat on, and then jumped over the wall which you wearnt meant to be able to get over Then you could walk about outside It's SA, you go the ganton gym kill everyone in the room, use jet pack cheat and fly through the roof, you have to fly towards Denise house and enter the brothel then fly up again... It's alot of pissing around, there's a map you can find on Google that shows you the location of Liberty City.
