Am I Knackering my GTA IV disc?

I've had the GTA IV since the day of the release and am a little worried that my copy of the game is not as sharp as it was when I first played it. What I mean is sometimes building and background detail can be a little slow to load, especially when travelling at speed. Also small details like trees and lamp-posts spawn a couple of seconds after everything else. I'm not 100% if it was like this from the start, but I didn't notice. I know all previous GTA's have had a tendency to do this.

Have any of you guys had this with your copy of the game?

Yes this has been a problem with all the games.

Are you by any chance playing on Xbox because my xbox has f*cked up my disc keeps marking it and i have to clean it periodically

As far as practical advice. Make sure you clean the disc

and use a cd cleaner for the lens in your system

Deuce Deuce

You have to expect a game as big and open-ended as GTA IV to experience a few technical issues.

The problem has always been there; my guess is that you were probably enjoying the game too much when you first got it that you overlooked the minor bugs and problems with it.

No he's right this has happened to me with all the games, as the state of the disc deteriorates.

You get lots more pop-up. sometimes textures take a long time to load. even found myself on invisible roads before.

Yet i had none of these problems to begin with. So it's not a technical issue with the actual game

Don't leave the game disc in the console, should help to pro-long its life.

Is this true? How does leaving it in the console add wear to the disc?

Im not sure to be honest, im not into the technical stuff but im told by someone who is that its true. i only own a couple of games and the game i played before GTA was in there for years, no hope of playing it now. couldnt hurt to take the disc out when your done.

I don't know how the tech works either, but it seems like the disc sliding in an out of the console would create more wear than just letting it sit in there. But like I said, I don't know.

biggrin.gif PC games don't load from discs because it is slow and unreliable.

another major reason why consoles are lame.

Take the disk out. I'm on 360 and my 2nd copy is now telling me the disk is unreadable after 5 mins of play. Console definatley scratching disk somehow...

I don't know if something happens when the console stops, but if theres a chance it'll help do it.

Scratching discs is actually quite a common fault with Xbox360, many of them were made poorly, Microsoft are c*nts though and will just claim that you moved it while the disc was playing, as if anyone would be that stupid

i have the same problem, i think its just because i play it every night and have not played another game since i got gta, which was when it was released, ( using ps3 btw ) so because of playing it for a couple of hours nearly every night it will ruin the disc, but saying that iv played cod4 for longer and it is fine so it could be a fault with the game

I noticed the exact same thing. The first thing I noticed was less anti-aliasing, then some of the things you mentioned started to happen. I was thinking it had to do with the amount of stuff that's accessible later in the game compared to the beginning, though, not the console scratching the disc, because when you're far into the game the hard drive has to remember all the things you've done already and combine that with reading data off the disc, which might somehow cause some issues. But that's just speculation

you could argue the opposite because if you take it out more you might get fingerprints on it

Too true.

I still enjoy the game though. However when I think that the machine I'm playing it on is about 4x worse than my PC, it makes me sad.

yeah the pc could be better but you have to upgrade it lots of times to play newer games and thats expensive and stupid paying 500 to upgrade your pc, thats crazy.

You don't have to have the best possible PC on the market to play a game. Even a 400€ computer from 1-2 years back would play this game several times better than a console.

I've only started noticing the same stuff a few days ago (split second pop in) - I guess because I'm used to it it doesn't bother me so much. Its been in all of the GTAs...always wondered why, but never enough to stop playing. lol

By the way, I've only heard the term 'knackered' once before, in Fable: TLC, one of the magic doorways used that word, I took it to mean 'tired'. I guess it means more like 'buggering' or 'destroying' but maybe not as strongly suggested? I dunno.
