Well done. Did you know, CJ was black?

He's brown, according to my television's adjustments.

Better than any of those links are words straight from Niko's voice actor. Interviewed on WJFK radio, Michael Hollick said he was asked to do a Serbian accent.

Link to audio (search for Hollick on the page)

Yep, and he sucks big time at it...

BTW, I'm new around here. I've been reading through some of the stuff on this forum for a couple of weeks, and I guess I just felt it might be time to join in.

Anyway, Niko's Serbian accent is utter crap. The language is gramatically correct (for example: the Croatian word for "sorry" is "oprosti", while Serbians say "izvini"), but the accent is way off. It would be better if they have cast a guy with a Serbian background to voice Niko.

And just to correct some misleading interpretations here...there is no "Serbo-Croatian" language. It never existed. It is a politically formed umbrella term, aimed to make us all feel like "brothers".

Why would you ruin my post by posting what you just posted?

Jesus Christ, dude... seriously...

Way to ruin my perfect explanation.

Douche.

Relax man...I could see if you'd come with new info that NO ONE knew about, or a good number of us didn't know about but its already been discussed ad nauseum and the aforementioned links have been posted before. Not necessarily wiki but you know what I mean.

So what?

They aren't alike at all. I can understand and talk a bit of Russian, but can't understand nothing in other Slavic languages (though they share some words).

Just the voice acting on the serbian part isn't too good.

I think they do that as a joke. The Scottish accents they use in earlier games are ridiculously bizarre.

Actually it isn´t. Michael Hollick went on a language training and had help with real Yugoslavs in doing the Serbocroatian speaking. It is pretty good considering he´s an American.

Believe me, it's not...I can easily understand him when he uses single words like "budala" (often heard when some dude crashes his car into yours...), but when he tries to say a whole sentence, it's waaaaaay off. And he's too polite for a Serbian too....Croats, Bosniaks, and Serbians are known for dirty curses that involve mothers, genitals, dogs, and all kind of stuff. It's like saying "good morning" in other countries...I haven't heard him saying a single curse yet. Way too polite for a Serbian, believe me...

I'll give him credit fro trying though, it is hard for non-slavic nations to learn slavic languages.

Totally true but sad. When I went into Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia last summer...... holly sh*t, I had forgotten how it was. They don't mean it really but its just part of their language. Croatians, Bosnians and Serbians even when they are greeting each other they swear "Vidi ga jebo mater svoju, pa gde si mi ti?" something like --> "Look at him f*cked his mother, where are you?" the guy would just call you someone that f*cks his own mother....... It was stuff like that when meting old friends, they don't mean to offend you at all but they still will swear at you (regarding your mother most of the time).

Anyway, long live peace in the Balkans! smile.gif They can swear as long as they ain't killing each other anymore. smile.gif

Eh, in the very first cutscene of the game, Niko meets Roman at the docks.

Roman says something along the lines of, "Your english is better than my Serbian."

That pretty much told me right there.

I'd hardly call it ignorance. How can we tell the difference from Ugandian and Rwandan? (I assume they speak some African language and not English or French) It's all some form of slavic. Not that easy for an outsider to tell the difference from two different, yet very alike languages.

He's a Serb, and if he's not he's a Bosniak doing an impression of a Serb.

My first home is Montenegro, I now live in England. I don't know better than every body else or anything, but I would bet it all that Niko Bellic is a Serb.

Some people may say he's Croatian or Russian.

Let me tell you, he is in fact Serbian. Even though the Croats have a similar language to ours, it's different. Lots of words are spelled and said different. Niko is not an exception. You guys can't assume him to be Russian because someone said: "Where's your Russian friend", and for GTA, which is a parody of American culture, probably have some stereotypes, for example assuming anyone with that kind of accent is Russian. Guess some of you guys really are like that. Second, Niko is indeed a war vet, he could even have PTSD. He was in the war when Yugoslavia broke apart, and by his age, he was 16-17 at that time. That's why he says: "Where the young and stupid...". Croats didn't fight, they were the bad guys. And the war was in the 90s so... I rest my case.
