Since some of you are just arguing like kids about Niko's nationality. Here, all this shows that he is Serbian. I though he was Russian before playing the game but no he is Serbian. Anyway, lets just enjoy the game!!! wink.gif

I know wikipedia is not a good source but on the English, French, Bulgrian and even Russia it is said he is a Serbian.

--As for the pigeons...

Why they did not put the HIDDEN PACKAGES and put PIGEONS is might be because as Niko is a Serbian and he hates Albanians which are represented as pigeons in Serbia. So he kills them....

--The language spken in the game (serbo-croatian) is spoken by croatians, serbian and bosnian. Croatians say they speak croatian not serbian, the language is the same :Serbo-Croatian: but Croats are saying croatian and Serbs serbian because they want to differentiate themself.

"Actual footage in the game of Roman saying Serbian (language)"

---he receive from his mother is written in ekavski(!!!) and thats the serbian way, the croatians use ijekavski(!!!).

"Serbs (Serbian: Срби or Srbi) are a South Slavic people living in the Balkans and Central Europe, mainly in Serbia (including Kosovo), Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and, to a lesser extent, in Croatia. They are also a significant minority in two other republics of the Former Yugoslavia- the Republic of Macedonia and Slovenia. Serbs are an officially recognized minority in both Romania and Hungary (mostly in Banat). There is a sizeable Serbian diaspora in Western Europe (predominantly concentrated in Germany, Switzerland and Austria), as well in North America: the United States and Canada." Wikipedia

Thus it is not certain that he is from any particular country, but from the Central Eastern part of Europe.

Was it not somewhere said that he was born in Croatia?

I actually have a Croatian friend so I did sort of recognize the language when spoken ingame from when he speaks Croatian, I don't understand it but I could tell the similarities to the ingame Serbian Language.

We can all agree though that what Niko can be said to be a Central-Eastern European.

Those sources are news sources describing the game, they have no secret information and are probably reprinting the same semi-mistake. There is no *official* Rockstar information as to Niko's specific nationality other than Eastern European, Slavic, Balkan etc.

That being said, Serbia is probably one of the most likely places with the little bits of information that come out in the game. Rockstar intentionally left his nationallity vague and I doubt they will confirm or deny the Serbian thing.

Well, in the 2nd trailer, he says, 'wheres your russian friend now' so he is probably russian IMO

If I talk about someone's friend who is Japanese, does that make me Japanese? Obviously not.

So how does him talking about someone else's friend being russian, make him russian?

NO,that mission where the albanian guys said "wheres your russian friend now?" they meant Vlad. Because Vlad is the loan shark Roman loans money from to pay off his debts to the Albanians. The Albanians never actually met Niko at the time until he kicked their asses.

He states repeatedly in the game that he is NOT russian.

He also states he is Serbian.

A few people call him Russian, and he always corrects them

I thought this had already been cleared up. He's definately Serbian. He's speaks a whole shed load of Serbian righ at the start.

If you want a glance into life in Serbia & Montenegro, just watch the eurovision song contest next week. Trust me, you would have left too!

Huh? Have you even played the game? (I've checked your gamertag and you have.....) In that same scene he says "He's not my friend he's my loan shark", which means he was reffering to Vlad, not Niko.

We've already stated varuious times, he is Serbian. But It doesn't even matter, cause he is a Video Game character.

He's serbian. I've been to serbia a couple of times, my dad is serbian, I have watched a few serbian shows and listened some serbian songs so yeah, he's serbian. Just the voice acting on the serbian part isn't too good.

lol.gif but, anyway, what sense does it make for you guys to argue about whether he' Serbian or, let's say Croatian - can you tell any difference?

Give recent Kosovo History a read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosovo_War and face the facts.

We can all agree though that what Niko can be said to be a Central-Eastern European.

Niko Bellic is a fictional character in the Grand Theft Auto video game series. He is the main protagonist and playable character of Grand Theft Auto IV. He is 30-years old, between 5’11” and 6’2” (1,80-1,88 m) and is 190-200 lbs (86-90 kg), born in Croatia.

Niko grew up in war-torn Yugoslavia. Niko's father was a bully who never believed in him, but his mother was very caring and felt sad that a decent person like Niko had to grow up in such a harsh place. Niko fought in the Bosnian War on the Serbian side as an "angry" teenager.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niko_Bellic#Niko_Bellic

So, according to wiki (which is not the best of sources, however, on the page, they list THEIR sources), Niko is Serbian, born in Croatia, and raised in Yugoslavia, which effectively makes him "Central/Eastern European" rather than any particular country. But, if you wanted to be exact, you could say he's a Serbian Croat, or a Croatian Serb.

Why would you ruin my post by posting what you just posted?

Way to ruin my perfect explanation.

You're probably right, I don't know, I don't care, but this:

--As for the pigeons...

Why they did not put the HIDDEN PACKAGES and put PIGEONS is might be because as Niko is a Serbian and he hates Albanians which are represented as pigeons in Serbia. So he kills them....

...is a particularly ludicrous little bit of racism. It's a video-game FFS, please don't shoehorn your sad little prejudices into places it's not welcome/relevant.

No, he isn't. He's Jewish. Notice the prominent proboscis?

His lust for riches gives him away.

Thank you.
