GTA IV Speech too soft - can't hear anything!

I just bought this game, put in my 360....

The opening cut scene starts, but I can't here a damn thing they're saying because the music is too loud and the speech volume is waaaay too low.

Seriously, it's completely unhearable.

Sometimes the voices sound fine, but most of the time they are too soft.

I have tried everything, tried setting sound to stereo, headphones, surround rear and surround side but nothing works!

Any help?

turn subtitles on in the pause menu, it will help with those strong accents aswell, but in the same menu there are volume levels for different parts of the game such as music etc etc. icon14.gif

i've tried adjusting everything, nothing works.

it totally ruins the gameplay experience by resorting to subtitles.

there surely must be some fix??

I got the same problem on the PS3 .. had to turn on the subtitles .. Hell, for a while there I would have to pull over the car to a nice quiet area (good luck finding one) just to listen to the phone conversation.. In RL I'd just roll the damn windows up ! smile.gif

if its the radio thats the problem then turn it off by holding right or left, all i can think of is the options in the pause screen that allow you to change the volume

its probly your speaker settup, imo. your problem is the first ive heard of it, so maybe the problems not with the game.

Yeah use the subtitles. You get used to them pretty quickly.

Also, no matter what your volume levels are set at, you still won't have a clue what the hell Little Jacob is saying. biggrin.gif

.Up&Coming.

Well, it helped me, but if you go to Audio in the menu, you want Voice Chat at "Retain Radio Volume". I have to use subtitles. It is a bit too soft.

Just wait till you get to the last mission. There's a 30 second cut scene that's completely drowned out by gun fire. I couldn't hear a word anyone said.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

I can hear everything crystal clear. Must be a problem with your speaker setup.

I have some problem, but would have appreciated more in depth audio adjustments. Like separate levels for car noise, radio noise, ped noise, ambient noise, etc, like some games have,

ok, have found a solution to this problem. the sound is only stuffed if you have the GTA IV DVD in the drive when booting up the xbox 360. U'll notice the xbox 360 menu sounds are also too soft if this is the case.

Just boot up the 360 without the GTA IV DVD in the drive and then insert the DVD and play. Sound is perfect.

Nice I'll try that, because I have the same problem with low audio level, when I play any other game in my 360 I put the home stereo volume below 20 points and with GTA4 I have to raise it to 28-30.

Regards and Tnxs!!

I have a PS3 piped through a home theater system, and I can tell you that this game requires the sound to be turned up much higher than other games. When I quit the game I have to turn down my volume by almost 40% or I will wake the neighbors in the next town.

Here is what gets me,,....if you watch t.v. in your safehouse, you have the option to turn the volume up....and if you crank it to the max, it will get VERY loud even with your t.v. volume low....but once you shut the t.v. off, the game reverts to its "hush mode". Weird.

I think this is a legit issue but the game is already out and it will not be fixed. Turning the volume up is no problem unless you forget to turn it down when done with the game.

I can't stand this either. There's only volume adjustments for SFX and music. They shoulda made a speech volume.

Trust me, they aren't saying anything important in the opening cutscene. It's basicly Niko telling the 2 having sex in the back room that they reached the harbor.
