"And to JWitfield apparently Xbox's DVD player is LG/Toshiba..."

Oh ok thanx for the heads up..

I wasnt sure.. so that may leave MS in a pickle then... Considering Toshiba owned the rights to HD and were making the players for MS...

Hmmm.... I dunno, they either get wit the times or jump ship and have it flow the same as the old consoles..

We arent going to wait around for MS to play patty cakes wit the industry if all they are going to do is hold them back..

In the end thier faults are boiling down to this.... I wonder who can hold the most DLC crap on a 2 gig HD or whatever it is.

Just curious if the game will be held back some in terms of scale due to the limitations of various consoles in storage capacity. PS3 users have bluray which is the standard that won out. Would a game be released in HDDVD? Just curious as to how the different storage capacities will impact GTA development in the future. One of the things I really enjoyed about San Andreas is how big the world felt.

Considering the limitation of the 'arcade' version of the xbox 360, they cannot assume all users will have a harddrive, so adding a more detailed environment and simply making the game larger and requiring an install is impossible. So yes, the game will obviously be limited by hardware.

The xbox not all having harddrives slows it down a lot. I'm sure there was a lot they wanted to do that required install, but they could not because at best they would have to make the install just optional instead of mandatory in order to allow the arcade version to play it.

The xbox also doesn't have a dedicated large storage optical drive such as a Blu-ray or HDDVD, thus, they're limited by sheer disc space. obviously having a sandbox game require you to "switch discs" is absurd considering that kills the openness of the game. if they used another disc simply for cimimatics instead you'd be better off having your console on your lap considering the amount of cut-scenes they use in the GTA games. My stats say i've seen over 275 cut-screens and i'm only 55% through the game. So that would be far too much disc swapping.

So, basically, yes, the game, and a lot of games are held back due to having to be run on so many SKU's. not trying to sound like a 360 hater, but they really held-back GTA.

Actually PS3 Did. =/ we wouldve been playing this game for 7 months now if it werent for that japanese piece of sh*t. they did all the initial developement from the 360 and the ps3 couldnt cope with GTAIV as easy as 360 has. look it up if u dont believe me.

wrong...as stated before it was just that the ps3 took longer to code for and was the last to start getting coded...ps3 can handle any xbox game and more...

Care to state a source?

That is a complete contradiction to this report : http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9893090-7.html

I remember reading it on the toms hardware website (www.tomshardware.com), i'll try and find the article tomorrow.

im pretty sure the bluray consortium stated that every bluray player needs a mandatory 1.3 HDMI port.

also, i read somewhere that the xbox would have significant trouble working with uncompressed data.

i am sure however that MS will use Bluray technology in their next console.

PS3 delayed the game by 2 weeks as stated by rockstar. also, you're cranial development is below average. the fail is strong in you

GTA4 is only 6 gigs...so I wouldnt worry too much about this generation of consoles being held back. The 360 has some amazing compression methods that no other system has due to it being made by MS.

XBOX Arcade owners are probably like 10% of all XBOX owners right now and will be fewer and fewer percentage as time goes on since all new systems have an HD. And I would think that a good number of these Arcade owners have since bought an HD.

R* should just come out and say that the next game requires XBOX owners to have an HD, and if you don't the game won't work. They will not be pissing off that many consumers.

I read it was 6.8 gigs, and the DVD9 only makes 7 gigs available, so the medium was maxed out by GTA4.

I find GTA4 to be pretty bare bones overall. There is just not a lot of variety, radio, etc. I attribute that to DVD9. Even if you don't agree with me, ask yourself if you think that the game is lacking in stuff, and then ask yourself why you think this is.

LOL ''the ps3 couldnt cope with GTAIV as easy as 360 has''. Are you fu*king joking? happy.gifhappy.gif

PS3 was just a bit harder for them to code as it's more complex.

Well it looks like one casualty of the bluray/hddvd format war is this generation of consoles. Hard drive storage seems to be an absolute must for any console. I'm surprised that the Xbox 360 didn't come with one stock, and now our game experience on multiplatform games will be degraded to accommodate the lowest common denominator. Just sucks that we're so early in this console cycle.

It is pretty strange of MS to bring out the arcade version of the console...I guess that was solely to get sales which is unfortuanate because it can possibly hold back the rest of the generation. R* can't turn around and say to the users of the arcade version that it won't work on their console because they cant seperate different versions of the 360 surely?

It has to be for the whole of the different versions of the console i beleive. Correct me if im wrong, please.

Actually both patforms are holding back the progress of the GTA series.

The PS3 has Blu-Ray, which is bottlenecked by a weaker GPU and weaker Ram allocation.(and 40MB less total Ram after OS)

The 360 version is hampered by not having it's HDD standard.

Also, both GPU's are very weak compare to the top GPU's at this time.

The 360 version is rendered in 720p and 2XFSAA but lacks the texture softening and post processing effects of the PS3 version.

The PS3 has the post filtering effects, but lack even reaching 720p(it's 640p) with no FSAA, let alone 720p and 2XFSAA.

There will be a new Xbox in 2010'/2011 and a new PS3 in 2011/2012, and that's when Rockstar will not be bottlenecked with not enough Ram or now aging GPU's or one console that lacks a standard HDD and a larger storage capacity then DVD9.

And both Sony and MS are to blame for sheer stupidity, because a HDD should have been in each 360, and Sony had an extra year over MS, and still went lowend on it's Ram.

I have both versions and it's so obvious that Rockstar was held back both graphically and size wise in GTA:IV.

I'm shocked Rockstar even got that much detail into GTA:IV, with both these consoles's weaknesses.

Can you just imagine a GTA:V where Rockstar has say 5Gig's of Ram, Blu-Ray capacity(with faster transfer speeds) and GPU's that blow away the best on the pc market now?

A great point PhilipO43 surely it couldn't have been too difficult to put additional RAM in could it? I suppose the motherboard or whatever these thing have couldn't handle a more poerful RAM which is a shame because it seems about standard in PCs to have 2Gb with the GPU i can't comment. But all your other points are valid and are great points. I wish to give you a cookie cookie.gif ... Which i hope means something good.

The cheap one with no HDD. To be honest I doubt anyone who bought that version is interested in GTA or any hardcore game for that matter.

ummmm also to add on to what sananoutlaw said >.> ps3 has had way better luck handling gta iv then the piece of crap 360 has, i have rarely seen people saying their ps3 just randomly stop or cant read the disk on the forum, xbox has so many problems with gta iv =/ only problem ps3 had was freezing which i have rarely seen someone talk about, everytime i come on gtaforums.com i see a thread about someones 360 being a piece of sh*t
