Will Future GTA Games Be Limited In Size?

Just curious if the game will be held back some in terms of scale due to the limitations of various consoles in storage capacity. PS3 users have bluray which is the standard that won out. Would a game be released in HDDVD? Just curious as to how the different storage capacities will impact GTA development in the future. One of the things I really enjoyed about San Andreas is how big the world felt.

HDDVD is really dead and not ever one has a hard disk drive. so yeah it will be. But they think the further of gaming on the console will be downloaded like steam.

Considering the limitation of the 'arcade' version of the xbox 360, they cannot assume all users will have a harddrive, so adding a more detailed environment and simply making the game larger and requiring an install is impossible. So yes, the game will obviously be limited by hardware.

The xbox not all having harddrives slows it down a lot. I'm sure there was a lot they wanted to do that required install, but they could not because at best they would have to make the install just optional instead of mandatory in order to allow the arcade version to play it.

The xbox also doesn't have a dedicated large storage optical drive such as a Blu-ray or HDDVD, thus, they're limited by sheer disc space. obviously having a sandbox game require you to "switch discs" is absurd considering that kills the openness of the game. if they used another disc simply for cimimatics instead you'd be better off having your console on your lap considering the amount of cut-scenes they use in the GTA games. My stats say i've seen over 275 cut-screens and i'm only 55% through the game. So that would be far too much disc swapping.

So, basically, yes, the game, and a lot of games are held back due to having to be run on so many SKU's. not trying to sound like a 360 hater, but they really held-back GTA.

But it's the Xbox version that gets the DLC, so I don't think the 360 Arcade did that much impact in terms of "holding back".

DLC is simply a addon and an optional secondary purchase.

That has very little to with the actual retail game. If they made the game to use the advantages of a harddrive, they would be making it impossible for any non-Hard Drive xbox to play the game. That would be a huge mistake, cause an uproar, and simply not an option considering they HAVE to make it playable on all SKU's.

People who own the arcade version sacraficed DLC when they purchased that console (Unless they bought the addon drive), so it's not a problem, they made their choice against DLC. So it's not an issue. but preventing them from playing the actual retail game isn't an option. so limiting the game to make sure it's playable on a console without a drive is a must for them. I'm sure Rockstar would have loved to force an install and make use of that extra performance, sadly, they could not. They we're also limited by the DVD size.

Seriously, both platforms caused the delay. Don't get all butthurt over hearing that the lack of harddisks limited GTA.

.....and? IF that was the reason. dozingoff.gif some games are limited to size due to the xbox, simple as that. Time is not the point, and IF the ps3 was the cause of the delay, that's just because it's more complex to code.

Do you honestly think that the PS3 wont get DLC?? It's just gonna take longer to get it.

The PS3 wasn't so much as a delay, It was simply just the last SKU to be coded for. basically the game was designed for the 360 SKU's, then ported over to the ps3 once it was done. the reason for this is anything they can do on the 360, the ps3 can handle. So they have to do the 360 version first. if they started with the PS3, they might add features that certain xbox versions could not handle when they tried to port it over to the 360. all developers code for the weakest SKU first, because that indicates the technical limitations you will have to follow.

Well guess what, most PCs nowadays have 200 GBs.

So f*ck you.

Funny considering:

From Rockstar Dev Nick Hersh:

"As for GTA IV coming out on the PC, that's very doubtful as we currently have no plans to develop for the PC. We could only focus our efforts extensively on so many consoles at once, and PC might not see the light of day."

yes , exactly , they had to make the xbox version first and convert , becuase they would have had to cut too much stuff to do it ps3 first , this R8 has stated themselves

Rockstar have always said they had no plans for a PC version for most previous games so its not really a clear-cut "haha 100% no PC" statement.

As far as GTA V or whatever it may be called being held back by the 360, I have a feeling that by the time a new GTA comes along MS will have released a new console(a console with dedicated HDD or Blu-Ray) or fail that Rockstar will simply only make it for PS3.

this basically is a more desriptive post than mine....as for source it was an interview with creators of R* on either G4 or Glameplay HD , watch so much of those darn channels i don't remember which...think it was G4

regardless I am not the only one who's been paying attention and knows this, if I can get some free time i'l try and find some type of link or better "source" for ya arse

If im honest i can see MS making the new console sooner. But then i don't see Sony willing to allow MS to use Blu-Ray players on their consoles owing to the fact that they will prove to be an advantage in the future with games like this...

You mean dvd, VHS, Beta?? what?? notice all those are well deadl... Ironically Beta was sonys 1st venture as owning the rights to a format. Taken down by VHS because Sony wouldn't allow the porn industry to use beta.

On an ironic note.. If Sony does this again, I think we might not see the death of HD DVD's..

Something to think about 360 owners.

Well HD-DVDs have stopped being made. Movies are no longer being put onto HD-DVD so they're all going on Blu-Ray now this happened a few months ago.

Also about Xbox getting a bluray player... Some say in MS camp they aren't to concerned about bluray, they want to concentrate on DLC.

Yeah i just read that too, but again as stated before that means that anyone without a HDD in their console won't be able to take advantage so thats just shunning a group of its users or forcing them to buy a HDD which is a bit harsh i find. But they're probably not interested in Blu-Ray because they know that Sony are gonig to make it difficult for them to actually get permission to develop a player for the Xbox.

Sony don't have a say where Blu-Ray goes, Sony don't own Blu-Ray if you weren't aware they are simply one of the big companies who are part of the Blu Ray Disc Association.

I donno, isnt the xbox CD player a samsung?

I dont think it would be all that hard if they go thru a 3rd party like that.. Then again I donno, sony might not cause they can get a raping of loot from both MS and Nintendo..

But we will see I guess.. we will see.

Its a fair point that they are only one of the companies...But they are one of the big companies and they did spearhead the campaign for Blu-Ray so i'd excpect their say to be a conciderable one.

And to JWitfield apparently Xbox's DVD player is LG/Toshiba...

Sony does not have a say in that, they may part of the companies developing the standard, they do not have the exclusive rights to it.

Porn is not an issue now, back in the beta days that was the medium that porn was mainly sold on, it was very important for that industry. we now live in a time where 99.5% of the porn sales takes place on the internet and is downloaded from there, it has no impact on this format war.

Which by the way has already ended, you can say we may not see the death of HD-DVD, but I have to disappoint you since it has already officially died.
