Possible reason for the reduction of pedestrians

I got to thinking about how there aren't that many peds around, and maybe the reduction of peds on the streets adds to the variety of them that you see. If the streets were constantly crowded with them, rockstar would need to make even more ped models to make them seem more diverse in a small section. By reducing peds on the streets, there are less models, and a seemingly higher diversity of them. suicidal.gif

Or maybe the ones you see are the really REALLY dumb part of the population.

All the others know they are in a game. But not just any game. Grand Theft Auto.

There will be no survivors.

They're the ones you find hiding in the bushes for no reason.

... so? I've been to Times Square, and it is constantly packed with people and cars. I go there at 10:30 at night in the game and there's maybe a dozen Taxis, if I'm lucky. The number of peds and traffic is often suspiciously low.

Diversity? What diversity? Do you really think everyone is THAT different? Not really... And what does it matter? Its like in Assassin's Creed. The pedestrian's behavior doesn't really matter. You can't interact with them.

You can't interact with them.

That's incorrect in so many ways...

Not even counting the friends you can interact with to get extra missions from, I've had countless random pedestrians interact with Niko.

For example...Niko is standing there with the carbine assult rifle in his hands and a big guy next to him looks over and goes "Hey man, put that sh*t away!!", then a few seconds later pulls out a gun and start shooting at him.

So? That's one in how many? They tend to react to you when you do ridiculous sh*t, but that doesn't mean they're actually very useful or well-designed.

By diversity, I meant several different pedestrians. Think back to vice city, you'd see the same person on the same street over 50 times while walking/driving down.

Personally I think the game would be very annoying if it had the same amount of traffic and peds as the real New York City.

Exactly. I couldn't really imagine it being that way.

theres less peds on the 360 version becuase it couldnt fit all the information on to a regular disk

Four warnings, two temp bans, a sh*tty attitude, and one permaban!

Bagged 'n' tagged.

I was thinking that there are now a lot of obese people that can't even get out of their houses... Could be...

My only Beef with the game is how the pedestrian and vehicles were, in the first trailer shown, the great classical music was playing, whilst being shown superior, year 3000 op quality skyscrapers, and thousands of pedestrians and cars clogging up the streets like a realistic, New York, however, I was dissapointed to turn it on for the first time, and see that times square was only inhabited by 10 or so pedestrians, and about 5 cars driving through.

Also, the quality of the game wasnt like the quality of the trailer, I had glimpses of GTA III and the squareness of the map.

This certainly should be fixed, I want to see more pedestrians in the game, and more traffic. this adds to the realisticness.

i really don't understand what you're saying...

the ped density is far greater and more realistic than previous games.

times square is a bit quiet, but that's clearly due to hardware limitations.

i can't remember seeing the same ped twice, there must be thousands of different shapes, sizes, clothing etc.

if you go to a park or gang area during daytime hours with nice weather you see looooads of peds on the screen... and they're all different, all doing different things, all with their own unique voices... it's quite astounding.

the other day i saw a group of peds chatting on a raised highway, with one of them sitting on the wall. when i speeded past the guy sitting fell backwards off the highway presumably to his death. are you saying you think vice city peds were better? tounge.gif

all these people keep saying that there's hardly any cars, hardly any peds, poor framerate... i'm thinking that your console is on its last legs, i've had my 360 for over a year now but i've hardly ever used it before gta4 (i play pc games mostly), and i definately have more crowded streets than gta3, vc or sa.

I agree, there are for sure far more and much better peds than in SA, VC or III.

You know just the other day I'm running thru middle park and come up on a group of about 12 or 15 people in workout gear, all organized in rows like a class with one ped in front facing them like the instructor, doing stretches and bends and everything! Find me that in SA lol.

I'm not sure what people are comparing the number and qauilty of peds to...The real New York? LuLz!!

ever think it has something to do with THE SEASON?

this game takes place in the fall.

have you ever been to NYC in the fall especially around late sept or oct? or even the thanksgiving holiday season?

not a lot of people compared to the rest of the year. also note coney island, aka firefly island is CLOSED this time of year, so no complaining about roller coasters either.

i went to NYC again last september with a friend and took them to times square, the first thing she said was "wow its so wierd to see it so dead like this"

hehe could you image it? drive onto the side walk and the pavement would be littered with splattered peds.

i read and it seems plausable that the peds are created on the fly using random clothing sets - hats tops - bottoms etc .

so that peds hardly ever are duplicated in same area unless they mapped to the area such as constrution workers, gang members etc.

- but i guess like the car spawing issues with coding - u will get similar looking peds - even identical ones when gta is generating gameplay code in real time to save time loading new textures etc.

i personally like the peds better in this one due to their own interactions with each other - the city - u - but they still are "filler" in the city as u cannot really interact with them - but the "random peds" is interesting to be built upon .... - but they fit the city well in what they do and how they react - but as the series goes on they will get better - i have faith !

i also feel there are more "ped types"- doing more varied things - washing windows -socialising - using phones - etc -

I sort of wish it had the population density like Assassin's Creed had. If anything that's one of the best things in that game. The only problem I really have is that there are barely any accessable buildings. I remember hearing that over 60% was supposed to be enterable. I was at least hoping to go through the first floor on some of the skyscrapers like the Zerconium Building (Chrystler Building). I will say on a lighter note, the interiors that were in the game are very nice, especially the museum.
