Problem finally isolated?

heres a quote from the sony GTA boards:

original post

THE ISSUE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED. Just got off the phone with T2 support. The issue that is causing the freezing is actually two separate issues.  One is the network problem that the newer PS3's are encountering however the older model, launche units are experiencing an entirely different problem. The launch version of PS3's used a different chip that could run PS2 and PS1 games without emulation. This chip is conflicting with the game code and cause GTA4 to freeze. The T2 representative told me that the fix will indeed not be exclusively in the form of a patch. There will probably be a patch for the issues relating to the network and things that the newer PS3's are facing however.. the older launch 60GB versions and possibly the 20gb, i didnt ask, will require a firmware upgrade that will allow GTA4 to run on the older chip. This firmware upgrade, he said, could be available anytime between tomorrow morning and "as soon as possible" as he put it. The issue is deffinately being adressed and it seems as though they have found what the problem is. So guys lets hope this works and spread this around because this came directly from my 25 minute conversation with T2 support that I just got finished with.

Would be sweet if they we got new firmware tomorrow, but i dont wanna get my hopes of actually playing up

And what about the 80gb?

If the post is accurate and many on the PS3 gta boards are assuming it is, it just says rockstar will fix the problems non launch systems are having with a patch, the launch systems on the other hand will probably require a firmware update

Why does rockstar always find a way to squeeze in a firmware update these days? moto_whistle.gif

Sony's working on the firmware. Apparently, the problem with the launch PS3's is the Emotion Engine. It's being triggered for whatever reason an causing the opening cutscene freeze. be nice if this could be fixed sooner rather than later, but with any new firmware, they gotta test it with every game on every type pf PS3, might take some time confused.gif

It's strange that they are reporting that it's only happening on a "limited amount of consoles." A poor attempt at damage control? Trying to keep the console flamewars to a minimum, maybe? It seems to be happening to a lot of people, and only recently. This never happened to me before I changed my display resolution for my new component cables.

It's limited because you're only really hearing from the people with problems.

Just a reply from Rockstar:

Thanks for the email.  Sorry to hear about your problems with Grand Theft Auto IV.  A very small percentage of consumers experiencing a game freeze on the PS3 version at the very beginning of the single player game may be doing so due to a hardware-related issue that applies to a specific batch of launch PS3 60GB units. We are working with Sony to find a solution for this issue as quickly as possible.

We also identified an issue whereby bad data being returned from one of Gamespy's servers was causing the single player game to crash at the beginning of the game if the gamer was connected to PSN. Gamespy have implemented a fix that resolves this issue and both companies are continuing to monitor this situation closely.

We are extremely sorry to hear about any of our fans experiencing problems, and want to assure everyone that we and our partners are working around the clock to resolve any issues. We want every single person’s experience of Grand Theft Auto IV to be outstanding. Any further support updates will be posted at www.rockstargames.com/support as soon as they are available.

Hope this helps,

the gamespy server thing is interesting, just hope they hurry the hell up on the hardware fix

Question is can I plug PSN back in without freeze... Id like to hear some official news...

They said the problem with newer models has been solved with gamespy (their servers were sending bad data). You should be able to play it connected to psn without freezing now.
