Algonquin Assassin
So after playing GTA IV for a few days, I don't think it's as gritty, or dark as GTA III was. Not sure if that's a bad or a good thing, because everytime I played GTA III, I was in a bad mood. lol What about you guys?
Mike0
GTA3 sparked that imagination in you. It had that first gameplay moment: You get into the Kuruma and Head Radio starts playing. In GTA IV you get into that old car at night, driving Roman to his home. And I dont know what is on the radio. And its dark, and the handling of the car is bad
ChrisAndy
I think that in some ways, IV feels more comical and at other times feels more foreboding. Because they tried to make these characters more realistic, there aren't dark caricatures. III was definitely dark, not just in atmosphere but because everyone you worked for was f*cking someone else up and the whole city just reeked of harsh rains... there really isn't any experience like driving a black Idaho through Saint Mark's at 2 am when it's pouring. samor
Not sure about gritty but GTA III was definately more grainy! Well Liberty is a more faithful recreation of New York - so I guess its as gritty as New York.
Tsuroki
GTA 3's storyline really had no "humour" to it, especially with characters. The humour came from the environment that you were in. Unlike Vice City onwards, GTA3 offered serious characters who were concerned about one thing: revenge. You were a mindless, voiceless hustler; a gun-for-hire who had no real motivation and no real conflict. Characters had one-track minds and weren't complex in the least. In GTA IV, it's different. Characters are multi-dimensional and the story has more depth. It's as confusing as real life: you start building relationships and associating yourself with acquaintances-of-acquaintances rather than being pushed along a set storyline. ivfreak
IMO, GTA3 was grittier. It was a darker city, you could tell it was full of corrupt folks. It was hardly ever sunny, always over cast and grey, kinda' gloomy.
Luck of the Irish
GTA III was way grittier, I didn't like it because it was always dark and so bloody depressing. Also the fact that for some reason (even at the beginning of the game) the random mechanics/engineers or whatever beat me up with baseball bats. Most gloomy, darkest, depressing game I've ever played... Still fun though.

Ebass
GTA3 was definatly grittier, though I wonder how much of that is because by the end of it practically the whole city shot at you. Triads Mafia (who were the worst because their shotguns could one shot a semi-damaged car) Cartel I think the Yakuza and Nines left you alone?
