Pop-in Xbox 360

I've had a 360 with a Samsung drive with occasional problems for a while (DREs when I would start the 360 with the disc in). So, when I started getting pop in worse than what seemed the reviewers were talking about, I started to get concerned for my Samsung drive. With my Samsung, light posts, bushes, some textures, etc etc, would pop up. Sometimes when I would turn around, sometimes a lot, sometimes not so much. So today, I went out and bought an Arcade with the BenQ drive. Here, I searched around and it seems most people are having trouble with the BenQ, and on the IGN forums, most people there it seems are having trouble with the Samsung and not so much with the BenQ. My experiences with the Samsung and BenQ were pretty similar. Both had fairly substantial pop in--so pretty much the same. It seemed like Samsung had worse geometry pop in, BenQ had worse texture pop in, if that makes sense (it doesn't make sense to me)

 

Some examples. On the bridge to Bohan, on the curve, the entire road texture would go away. This was the same on BOTH machines, in the exact same location. It's either the disc, or a common problem. Another scenario with the differences people have are simply perception. I've been looking for pop in so I see it, and perhaps a lot of people just don't notice.

 

The BenQ did load faster on start up when compared to the Samsung, so the BenQ being slower or worse just makes no sense to me.

 

So finally, I think it's just the game and the pop in is simply worse than reviewers were letting on. If you haven't noticed pop in, what drive are you using, how long have you played (I've noticed the pop in getting progressively worse), do you have a HDD or not, what kind of pop in are you seeing, do you even look for pop in?

 

I'd like to try to figure out what's going on here, if anything. I'm starting to think it's just the game. Also, someone with bad pop in, clear the cache and see if that helps and post back here.

First off, I dont think the dvd drive has much to do with it, although it could contribute to the problem. The thing is the Hard Drive Cache..

 

Try playing without the HDD and youll see what I mean. Since it does cache files, I does take some time. I remember when I first started playing , the pop-in was pretty bad. But as the game went on, it was considerably less and less. So Im not too sure, thats just my experience.

I've been playing a lot and with the HDD the entire time, and the problem has gotten worse since I first started. It could be the game, or it could be just that the later environments are more pop up prone, but our experiences contradict.

Another problem that could be adding to it is how much data you have on your HDD as well.

 

 

Another thing to try with that is to insert three games in a row to empty the cache that is stored for gaming and then reboot the system and insert GTA IV

Personally I think the pop in/up on this game is appalling.

 

Driving along in-mission being chased, drive past a lamp post and crash into thin air. After the car stops suddenly a barrier appears around the post!!!

 

Driving along a straight road, where I know there is a dip but suddenly I'm driving through a flat grey texture and then the car drops into the dip!

 

Cars appear from nowhere.

 

I left my safehouse to find the bonnet of my parked car through the floor and the back wheels off the ground.

 

Also one thing slightly unrelated that bugs the sh*t outta me is when you're on a bridge all the cars swerve lanes then straight back again, as if the command for them to do so properly is broken.

 

RS had almost an extra year to sort these problems out, how could they let so many issues slip through??

try this to clear the cache here i have a benq and theres pop in but its no better or worse then SA but of course i have only had it for 4 days

Its not just the 360 though, my 40GB PS3 with the installation still has very noticable pop-in. You can see lower quality textures/buildings getting better and better while your next to them. Phone boxes, lamposts and things like that pop-in quite a lot. When turning corners, sometimes theres nothing there for about 0.2 secs and then it all appears but this is very rare, when driving over certain places, the floor texture will pop-in.

Thats not normal. I have only had 1 building pop in quite badly. And about 5 instances of shadow popin. (60GB Release PS3)

I'm the same, I have a launch 360 Premium with a 20gb HDD.

 

I've only had one instance of popup (reoccuring) which is when you go into a safehouse, originally the bed isn't there and then it appears.

 

Elsewhere no problems, none on the streets etc.

 

Could it be the game that you're using? Maybe it's scratched or something
