Graphics (?!?) What's going on?

I'm glad I'm not the only who's experiencing some display/graphics issues with GTA4 - I thought it was just me... What I have managed to find out is that the Flicker Filter appears only to be available if your PS3 is connected to a Standard Definition TV - HDTV owners - such as me - have no filter options.

What I don't understand is how, for instance, IGN can give it 10 out of 10 for graphics stating "The level of detail is unsurpassed, with each pixel conspiring to create an unprecedented level of immersion.". What are their settings? Not sure what's going on, but while I rate the game, the 'acting', and the story; the graphics - not environment - suck!

Maybe in time there will be an update that addresses the issue, but for now I'm having to sit more or less on top of the TV to see what's going on in the distance.

I think the graphics are good, it's just the draw distance which is lower than I would like. The actual detail of the buildings, roads and the city overall is great up close. Things in the distance though are very low quality.

But that is the way it is, nothing can be done about that. R*'s only limit is the hardware, and at this time they cannot do any better. I think the potential for a PC release is great, because the city IS detailed and awesome, it just needs some better hardware to run on.

I suppose what I mean when I say the graphics suck is that they're not pin-sharp. You look at Burnout (which also has a city backdrop) and the graphics are somewhat clearer. I know there would be a frame rate issue in GTA4 if the blur wasn't there, but close up I would have expected less jagged lines. It's like I haven't got the resolution set right which, on a PS3, I can't really do anything about.

I know actually what you mean! I was so excited to finally play GTAIV and the graphics look bad. I seen on trailers of the game the rollercoaster(on the first island) looked so real, then when i drive by it the lines are all jagged up. I had bought a new HDTV because i thought something was wrong with my TV and i had the same problem. lol I just returned the TV. So, my final option is to buy a good COmputer Monitor and hooking up the 360 to it with the VGA cord. Rather than play like 1,000 dollars for a FUll HDTV i could buy a 300-400 computer monitor for better graphics.
