Che Guevara 67
Jack Thompson, as always, made a fool of himself during a broadcast on CNN Headline News earlier. However, it seems that there are Jack Thompson sympathizers at CNN. Watch and be amazed at the ignorance. Here's part one : And here's part two : /EPIC FAIL FOR JACK THOMPSON
saltinespike
You can beat the hooker with a baseball bat or skip the whole fight, make like Indiana Jones, and shoot her fatass in the stomach. This report makes me chuckle. EDIT: If he had not been training on this cop-killing simulator, he would not have managed to kill 3 cops. He played GTA3 and Vice City. Not the most realistic way to train. PS: First post. PSS: Here are the videos for whatever reason you can think of not to click the links above. And for good measure: Edited May 2, 2008 by saltinespike

doodlydoo
I don't watch tv or news much because If I did I would laugh at these morons. I can't believe how some parents are so dumb that they can't tell the difference between real and reality.

GTA_Godfather
Glen and Jack are off on this one. There will always be those who do crazy things and get crazy ideas from things they see (movies, TV, real life, games, etc.), but it's unfair to single out games. And, that's not your "average" person. 99.99% of us know the difference between a game and reality. Just because someone says, "I saw XYZ in XYZ," or "XYZ told me to commit this heinous crime," does that mean you go after what this person said made them do it? What if they said, "Jack Thompson made me do it."? Should we go after Jack Thompson? People need to be responsible for their own actions and quit blaming companies like R*. Also, Jack's beef is with the ESRB, not Rockstar. If he doesn't like the rating system, that's fine. Let him protest the ESRB. R* conformed to their independent rating and "blood, violence, sexual content, etc." is clearly marked on the case. It's not as if R* is trying to hide anything. If stores are selling M rated games to kids, then there should be action taken. I think most places try to do the best they can. It's not like the way the Jack puts it (that all these games being sold exclusively to children even though it's M rated). Don't they understand the game is rated M for a reason? It's clearly not appropriate for children. R* will tell you that themselves! I see no fault on R* here as they are in full compliance with the ESRB. Parents need to do their duty in monitoring what their kids are playing. Novel idea I know. We don't need the government parenting kids. It's all common sense. predator911
Those people are such fantastic hypocrits it's laughable. The fact of the matter is that the context under which a form of media is being viewed or interacted with makes a HUGE difference on what impact it has on that person. Games are an effective tool at training soldiers to kill because they're told that's what the game is intended to do. They're in the military, they know they may have to kill someone potentially, they know the game is made to prepare them for that. Likewise, a movie or a videogame that is solely designed and used for entertainment, will not have the same impact. People laugh and have fun when they're playing GTA, they treat it like an escape from their daily lives, not as a tool to prepare them for it. Of course there ARE crazy people who get bad ideas from violent media intended for entertainment, but this cannot be blamed on the media because these people are CRAZY. There were homicidal maniacs before violent games and there will always be. Ok now to the hypocricy. It's a fact that the United States has become quite a violent place, and people LOVE to blame that on the violent entertainment that's produced in this country. The problem with that arguement is that there are many countries that produce their own entertainment that's equally violent in nature, and are just as saturated with the same American-made entertainment that we have. According to Jack Thompson that should mean these countries should have a similar crime problem, but most clearly don't. There is one sect of the media in the US that clearly differs from that of our international counterparts, that's the news media. TV and radio news shows and newspapers in the US are FILLED with stories of violence and depravity of the worst nature day-in and day-out. The difference is that people don't use the news for entertainment, they don't separate it from reality because it's supposed to be reality. What's more likely to drive a person to become a paranoid, deranged psychopath? A movie or a game that's clearly intended to be entertaining and has no grounding in reality, or the real news telling you about real murderers and rapists and lowlives who could be prowling the streets in your own neighborhood? It's my assertion that there's a high-level of fear mongering going on right there in that very news report on CNN. It's the story of the crazed youth, kids driven to kill by violent games, almost sounds like something out of a horror movie. It's far more disturbing to hear Jack Thompson repeatedly hammer this one incident of a crazy guy who played GTA and killed 3 police officers than it is to actually play GTA. It's easy for anyone who has played the game to see that, but for anyone who hasn't it can be quite a scary thing when national news services simply describe some of the most violent aspects of the game, tell them it's played by many millions of people, then give testimonials about individuals who played the game and killed people. Frankly I'd be a lot more worried about the person who buys into that that deceptive reasoning than someone who plays GTA.
NightRavenII
OH LAWD not Jack Thompson again. While I agree that stores shouldn't be selling items that have been marked as Mature to anyone underage, this whole bullspit about how video games are the cause to people doing violent things outrages me. Has anyone ever stopped to think that these same people might have been screwed up in the head to begin with? No, it is more convenient to blame someone or something else rather than blame the person who did the crime in the first place. My stepson has played GTA: SA and he hasn't thought of the game as it being real life or a training sim to kill cops yet he is only 15. I swear, when Jack Thompson speaks, I want to go out and punch a kitten, hrmmmm could he be sued for that I wonder....

Also im like 85% into the game how come when I go into the strip clubs I can't get anal/oral sex? Edited May 2, 2008 by GloRy
