Niko is short for Nikola, a Serbian or Croatian name. Niko is in fact Serbian, Vlad calls him Serbian, in the opening cutscene Niko and Roman talk about their language: Serbian, and he was in the Bosnian war. Rockstar specifically made him Serbian, so they can use the war in Bosnia to give him a dark and painfull past. "We did some bad things, and bad things happend to us" Its part of the deeper storyline. Not all Serbs are war criminals. Are all Asians good at math? Are all Arabs terrorists? These are stupid stereotypes that only poorly educated people believe in because they fail to think intelligently. People call Niko Russian or Polak to insult him, its a generalization, like in real life if you were to meet a slavic person, you might assume he was Russian because theres like 150 million of them. Also, in WWII, every country in Europe protected Jews to some extent; hell, even some Catholic/Lutheran Germans protected some Jews in private. Serbs were an enemy of Hitler, not a follower. I got friends who are Serb, and hey I love them as a friend the same as any of my other friends, be them Bosnian, Croat, Australian American whatever! I think seriously no matter who he is, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Montenegrin, Blue, Yellow, Green or Magenta that its Niko Bellic and that hes there to get revenge on the people who backstabbed him. You play, you have fun, you enjoy And Rockstar probably knew if they made a statement that hes Serbian, or Croatian, or Bosnian it would cause a ruckess. It would have been a politically tense situation if they did that. So just get over the premise what he is and think of just Eastern European and that hes in LC and that you're playing as him; that way you won't get your knickers in knots if you get angry thoughts and strong feelings thinking about it.
