Disc Read Error - Disc Picture - Xbox 360

So i got GTA4 today, and just as I was walking around after getting to the first save point the game would stop and throw a wonderful Disc Read Error and shut down.

My xbox 360 is brand new, other games work fine without a hitch. After looking at the disc to see if it scratch i discovered what looks to be a missing data ring. The rest of the disc is flawless other then a discolored ring as shown in the picture.

I also attached an image of my disc drive tray for reference.

Anyone having a similar issue, and is this ring normal?

Hi. I've been having the exact same problem. After giving my disk a really good clean, it worked for a bit, but now doesn't even get past the loading screen.

I too have noticed that perfect ring around the disc...anyone got any advice? Should I swap it out?

Blackadder.

I have had this error quite a bit too, once it amde my game completley unplayable, but I seem to have by passed it.

Go to your system blade, then to memory, then hit "Y" then hit "X,X LB,RB,X,X." It should ask if you would like to perform maintenance. Press ok, this will simply clear your cache. Fire up GTA IV and hopefully it will work! It's coming back for me so I guess I'll have to do that again...

Post if it works for you or not. icon14.gif

EDIT: This will only work for people with a HDD.

I tried clearing cache before, and it still didn't work. Gonna try another game now, see what that's like, then I'll try clearing cache and going on GTA again.

I do certainly have that ring around the disk though, which is rather worrying...

Same problem here. The game gives me a disk read error every time I get to a certain point in a mission... I can't progress thru the game cause of this.

Went back cleared my Cache and so it let me through the mission without the disk read error... perhaps i wont have many more problems, but most likely i will...

And I don't have the BenQ drive...

Remeber to tell if you have the same disc drive as in the picture, BenQ drive

EDIT:+ I'm coming to other a little more satisfying results because when I restart the game (back to the beginning) the data shoulnd't be written in the same spot right so why would it freeze but it does atleast for me

The safehouse Roman gives to you? I wiped all my saves, cleared the cache, started over and it worked.

Speaking of which, I can't do Playbox X's missions cause I get the error after I skip the taxi ride to his house.

thats what u get trying to put a huge game on a crappy little hd disk, u get those problems, glitches, the graphics suck compared to ps3, and frame rate issues, i dont know what rockstar was thinking giving the xbox the episodes and not the playstation, playstations has always done rockstar well, bill gates needs to stick with computers

It's got nothing to do with the size of the disc, it's cause the data wasn't written properly, and as a result there are so many disc errors. If you even bothered to check the size of GTA IV, you would of known it's only 6.4GB (Apparently 7GB for the NTSC version) which leaves over another 2GB left.

And as EL BENSON said, the PS3 has the same amount of issues, if not more, than the 360.

i have yet to freeze with my gta iv, nor does it blackadder anywhere, i gta iv was suppose to be released last november, and from what i heard, from people who actually work with the stuff, they said the hd disks were having spacing issues, and the ps3 disks were just having start up issues, well i think i would believe the professionals, and for me, i tried gta iv on xbox, to me ps3 gives u a way better experience, besides to waste ur money on an xbox u have a 50% chance of having one that works, most my friends with an xbox had gotten the red ring of death, or it over heated and just crapped out which actually all xbox's do that, also xbox eat disks one burned up a xbox cause it tore up the cd inside and jammed it, and well i rather have 1080p quality then a lower quality

Lol fanboys lol.gif

if you actually new anything about the ps3 you would now that the majority of gta related problems is on the ps3 only a few problems have accured on the 360 compared

and you can say what ever you want but search on google, dont just reply with information you think is right even though you havent read it anywhere and just cause you think the ps3 is flawless

and if you gonna call someone a 'retard' make sure you know what your saying is right (which it isnt)otherwise you'll just end up looking 'downright silly' tounge2.gif

I have the same ring (Xbox360 speacial edition)

and have been have the Unreadable error about once an hour.

I then cleared my cache (X,X,LB,RB,X,X on the memory option in dashboard)

And took a very close look at my disc.

Other than the ring I saw nothing wrong, then I breathed on it (to fog it up) and saw what looked to be an oily coating on it.

Wiped it off and have now played for 6-8 hours and have not seen the error again.

I am not sure what did it, the cleaning or the clearing but it worked for me.

This is very easy to fix. Just wash the disk under tap water, spread standard toothpaste over the disk, rinse and repeat. Make sure its completely dry and free of toothpaste before you put it back in the tray.

Best of all yout copy is now minty fresh. All the best, I just fixed mine icon14.gif

The xbox 360 likes to eat discs. the first one I had killed my oblivion disc, did damage to my GOW disc, and also damaged my saints row disc. Then after my first one RROD, I got another one with a different disc drive, and that one damaged my oblivion disc too.(my second one)

This lead me to buy the ps3 version so that I wouldn't have to worry about this. Unfortunately, the PS3 version keeps freezing, so I lost in the end anyway.

all of you fanboys are wrong, the only difference between the two consoles is that one is an American piece of crap, while the other is a Japanese piece of crap. They both have unreliable hardware inside them. (my PS3 had its blu-ray drive conk out after just two months of owning it, and my 360 got the RROD once already.)
