GTA IV Anti-Aliasing

Sup,

 

Im kind of a noob when it comes to terms like this.

 

What exactly is anti-aliasing? i heard there is more anti-aliasing on the Xbox360 version of GTAIV than the PS3 version because of the 630p resolution.

 

What is good about anti-aliasing and how does it make a game look better or worse?

 

Someone fill me in please.

as you can see in the post above me..it 'smoothens out' the edges. I played both versions and didn't see much difference except maybe for the colors. And i experience far more pop-up in the ps3 version which sucks cuz that's the versions i'll be playing from now on, my 360 is kind of dead. I don't get it, the 360 installs nothing and far less pop-up while my dvd drive was very f*cked up, so it didn't load properly, and the ps3 installs like 3,6 gb and still a lot of pop-up

But it shows in comparison videos, they both have strengths and weaknesses in appearance. But i can't tell which version has better anti-aliasing because my eyes are bad, either that, or the quality of the video is wack.

I would just wait for the inevitable PC version. We don't have deal with issues like this. I have to laugh at all the issues on the consoles that are NON-issues on an average PC. 0x AA/AF? 2xAA/AF. Is that supposed to be a joke? I never play a game with settings that low.

 

On top of this console gamers have to deal with low resolutions like 720p (1280x720 resolution). This is a joke too. I play my PC games at 1920x1200 which is better than even 1080p. It allows for needle-sharp graphics. It's just not achievable on a console.

 

Playing GTA IV on a console. There's your problem.

I'm not being silly. What do you thin kthe cache is for? It's to make up for the slow 8x DLDVD drive they used...

 

4mBps max reading of 360 DLDVD, 40mBps Sata drive ps3.

ya those videos are very low resolution. I ve been hearing for a long time how the ps3 has better AA, since some previews early this year. A different result in comparsion from AA could be a result from TV settings/type, wires, system adjustments, in-game ajustments.

 

The funny thing is people bitch about graphics when most of them dont even have good enough equipment to see a difference.

 

U need atleast 720p or higher and an hdmi cable, with the right settings on all the things.

Well i have a 52'' Sharp HDTV without the PS3 HDMI cable so maybe it would look good on my TV. I haven't picked it up yet from the store so i havent seen what it looks like yet.

See this is where MalR misunderstood me. I wasn't calling you a liar at all. I've read the reviews, and I agree with what you said. The PS3 does have less pop-up, I haven't denied that in any of my posts. I was simply making a harmless, friendly joke about the fact you said 300 reviews, when we both know there haven't been 300 (notable) reviews thus far.

 

Which is why I called him a fanboy. I make a joke about the number of reviews, not PS3/360 related, and he pounces on me like a Sony-branded panther.

Since no one really answered about the difference between 630p and 720p, I'll do it.

 

These are the resolution of the image. The same applies to your computer screen, if you lower the resolution to say 800x600, it will look bad, but if you bring it up to 1280x960, it will look good. The resolution is the total number of pixels being displayed, divided of course by width and height.

 

630p = 1120x630

720p = 1280x720

 

The total amount of pixels being displayed on any given screen will determine how crisp the imagine looks.

 

630p = 705,600 pixels

720p = 921,600 pixels

 

So, at 720p there will be 216,000 more pixels being displayed. Percentage wise, 720p will show 24.5% more pixels in total, increasing raw sharpness and detail by 24.5%, without taking into account other technologies being used, such as antialiasing.

 

Antialiasing is a technology that basically copies certain pixels and rerenders them with varying levels of transparency within the immediate vicinity of the original pixel. This gives the effect that the areas are smoothed out, because where normally there would be a blank space, instead now there are very tiny transparent pixels that are meant to fill that space in evenly.
