Xbox Live Multiplayer - Important Info

To second the post and make people aware, ensuring my NAT was set to open, as apposed to strict, enabled me to play pretty much fine in online multi player.

Before, i kept losing my connection, couldn't join ranked, and could join my friends games full stop. I tried before altering my NAT, didnt work. After changing it EVERYTHING i tried worked fine (ranked games, no connection loss, playing large games, voice chat) The previous post on this topic mentions how to check your NAT setting on your XBOX, the slightly hard part was how to change it on your router. All i can suggest is googling it, and looking on the xbox page. I have a BT homehub, it was pretty easy to fix when i knew how (reset it). Hope this info helps anyone with problems. Pretty happy im not getting sent back to single player every 5 minutes.

someone help please i have AT&T DSL hooked up to a lynksys WRT54G. then my 360 hooked up to my laptop to use the wireless i have NEVER had a problem and still dont only WITH GTAIV. my NAT says "Strict" so i'm guessing now that thats what needs to be fixed how can i make it so my NAT isnt strict anymore?

and if i decide to call for help would it be better to call Microsoft or Lynksys?

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers...ox_Live_360.htm

for other routers... just find them on www.portforward.com

....

here's a little help... your router IP address should be: 192.168.1.1 type this in your URL on your Internet Browser of choice...

next should be a password prompt.... the default username and password for almost all linksys is "admin" and "admin"

make sure you go the dashboard and write down your xbox's IP adress... it should be an extension of 192.168.1.1..... i.e. 192.168.1.102 (network settings... edit settings to find your IP.... note: your IP for your xbox resets and changes every now and again depending if you reset your router... so this is always import to know your xbox's IP to keep your ports open)

the next is pretty much step by step from the above link... I opened up about 6 port options b/c my IP seems to vary every now and then....

also one should note that if your IP for your xbox has the extension of let's say.... 192.168.1.102... be safe and open up two separate IP addresses... one should be "192.168.102" for both the 88 to 88 and 3074 to 3074 port range and also open up ports for the IP "192.168.1"...(helps somehow with the port range... same goes if your IP is 192.168.205... open one up for .205 and .2"

also disable your firewall from the admin options.... hope this somehow helps

EDIT: I thought the saints row matchmaking was long and painful... but right now this is bringing back an eerie feeling... basically with saint's row if my ports weren't open I couldn't chat ingame or in the dashboard with anyone with a d-link router... and my lazy bum friends would never return the favor and open their ports (however we still got matches),

but in GTA those of my friends that either aren't running directly through a modem or don't have their ports open are consistently getting kicked from our lobbies (far worse than even Saint's Row)... so all in all, everyone really really needs to open their ports if on a router... and GTA needs to get a better multiplayer code so that people that have an OPEN connection can play with someone that doesn't understand how to open their ports....

As the post above me said, go to http://www.portforward.com/english/routers...ox_Live_360.htm and follow the instructions.

Some routers have a option letting you open the NAT without messing with port forwarding.

If you want a quick solution then you can try setting DMZ to your Xbox 360s IP or plugging staight to your modem. On the long term you'll need to forward the ports for your console to get online gaming working correctly.
