Conspiracy Theory 1 : Corporate Espionage On February 24th an offer was made to buy Rockstar parent company Take Two for $2 billion, but Take Two rejected the bid, and there may also be other bidders waiting in the wings. One unsubstantiated rumour flying around the internet is that a mole working for one of these potential bidders 'fixed' the GTA IV release code to destabilise the key product launch and thus weaken Take Two - to make the takeover easier. Conspiracy Theory 2 : Malicious Attack Some people have suggested that GTA IV could be the carrier for a huge Trojan Horse attack on gamers worldwide. Just 1 day after the official release forums are being filled with posts about problems experienced with consoles after using GTA IV, eg Bluray players not working on PS3 consoles and issues with other games not seen before. Conspiracy Theory 3 : Over Protection Another suggestion is that, hoping for a record breaking release, and wanting to protect themselves from early piracy and usage of leaked copies such as those made available to the media, the games authors added code to it that checks such things as date / time / timezone and / or flags on their servers to intentionally make the game unstable / unplayable. Once a certain date / time is reached, or the flags are reset, the game would return to normal operation - presumably once the bulk of sales had been achieved. Alternatively the removal of these conditions may have been mis-managed and left in too late affecting real users unintentionally. If you find any more - please add them here now!
