euphoria reviews

So I thought I'd start this thread to share my thoughts and experiences with euphoria in GTAIV and try to get other people's thoughts and experiences.

After quite a few hours of playing this game I feel I've gotten quite a good idea of what euphoria has to offer and so far my impression is pretty mixed. I've seen some great things and some things that make me cringe.

So far the slight variations in every animation aren't so noticeable, but then again that might be a good sign. Animations of people do look quite fluid and natural.

Combat looks really nice. Sure it is essentially a slightly improved ragdoll for the most part, but it is certainly a welcome improvement. Shooting or punching people and seeing an accurate physical response is great. I'm only really disappointed with leg shots. I had the impression that if I shot an NPC in the leg they would fall down. While they do limp a bit it doesn't seem to drastically slow them down much.

Falling to the ground is quite annoying. There is this obvious structure of react to push, decide whether to stay up or not, go into half-rigid ragdoll to fall, pause, get up. You can actually see each process taking place. It is not very smooth and tends to take a while to go through the whole process. You could argue that it is realistic for the most part and it certainly looks nice, but it isn't always fun. Especially when Niko falls over in a gunfight.

I have also noticed that lightly bumping into a person often creates an over exaggerated response. Sometimes tipping people over just by rubbing against them. What is cool though is I have seen people use objects like tables and desks to hold themselves up when this happens. That is amazing.

Luckily it is pretty hard to knock Niko out of his car (that was a big fear) but when he does (or jumps out the door of a moving car) he goes into serious tumbleweed mode. There should be a rank for longest roll. I swear I've rolled a quarter of a mile out the windshield! smile.gif

Other note: Is it just me or do most pedestrians drop whatever they are carrying if you get within 4 feet of them? This seems most common with coffee cups, but also with groceries. I guess littering is a real problem in Liberty City.

I bumped into Little Jacob on a staircase and watched him tumble down the stairs, lie there for a few seconds, then get up and start smoking his spliff again, it was funny.

My best euphoria moment happened when I was about 10 yards from a cop. I started shooting him in the stomach and walking towards him. He buckled over, holding his stomach as I continued to fire. A round caught his shoulder, and he began to stumble backwards. More rounds into his stomach forced him backwards still. In a last ditch effort to save his life, he raised his pistol toward me (holding it sideways) and fired a couple shots. A final shot to the head, and he went backwards and down.

The beauty of this was that he seemed to actually be reacting to the SITUATION, and not just bullet hit point x,y at z speed, etc. The fact that he was backing away--there was almost a look of fear on his face.

Most euphoria is pretty simple--as are real life moments. Bump into someone, they fall or try to catch themselves...big deal. But moments like my cop shootout bring that element of 'fight or flight' into the equation, and I've never seen that before.

Now when I kill peds or cops, I do so in a manner that will allow me to see euphoria at work. It's almost like a minigame now.

Overall its freekin' Sweet!!! Yeah its got a few bugs though...

Out of everything I would have to say that i really really hate that everyone stops what they are doing as soon as i get 4ft. from them... Conversations just stop between peds its kinda gay because i like to eves drop and just suck in the environment.

Euphoria is absolutely amazing, I've never seen a physics engine like it, not even these 'super realistic' games (eg Crysis, COD4, ect) have physics like this.

You can use a shotgun as a cane? That's sweet.

My Review

As i carjack a vehicle, a police officer spots me and opens up the door ready to bust me. As the officer opens the door, Niko backs the car up and the officer is caught within the car's door hanging on the window and his feet draggin across the street. The police officer can't do anything other than yell, "Stop the vehicle, HELP!" lmao. Then untill he couldn't hang on no more he lets go and the door hits him right in the face and his gun goes off as it hits the floor. It was great!

Another time, it was in a dark rainy night. I walked up to this woman and hit her in the face because i wanted to try out the new fighting system (i figured it will be easier to beat up a woman than a man). Two thugs saw me and walk up to me talking trash about hitting a female. They try to jump me and nearly kill me. So i grab a car and back up (to get some speed) and then go after them, i crushed on with my car and the wall, leaving blood all over my hood. I back up to find the other one, untill i noticed he was on my trunk trying to get on top of my car. I don't stop, i keep backing up trying to make him fall, he couldn't hang on no-more and lets go, causing him to get caught up under my tires. Cops when onto me, and i jump over this fence (thinking it was gonna be water underneath) and i died because it was a level 2 street, lol.

Once when I was watching a live stream, the guy lightly scraped a slowly moving taxi, and when he did that Euphoria totally took over his control and he couldn't move his guy anymore because it was bugged... It stopped after he hit something solid again.. I guess every engine has it's bugs.

Has anyone had any interesting experiences throwing stuff? I was a bit disappointed after the 'brick through the window' mission I tried chucking a brick off the highway at a car window but didn't break - can throwing things do damage? Shame that you can't seem to pick up trash cans or something substantial

Couple of minutes into the game. I still a pickup truck from this guy. He gets up and wants to fight. I just want to drive. So I hop in and start to pull away (after holding A yelling WTF?) Then I get going and he grabs on to the bed and is hanging. I started swinging the rear of the truck back and forth. Watching him swing and smash his legs against the side the swing back and his head beat his legs back around because they started to drag a bit. Back of his head smacks the back. Then around again for the poor Ped. When he finally fell off into a tumble roll, I was ROFL. This was within 10 minutes and I knew Euphoria was awesome.

Yes there are some bugs, but can overlook for some of the great things I have seen.

And as mentioned before, smashing into a ped and pinning them between the car and the wall is unbelievable. The blood left on the hood keeps reminding you what you just did too!
