jack III
not played the game much as i haven't got it. but i have relised something very important and a bit of a backfire from rockstar. all the names of everything has changed from GTA 3 and liberty city stories. this doesn't make sense to me. anybody understand why this is? example broker bridge was callahan wasn't it? Elim Rawne
Its not the same Liberty City. Well it is, but it isn't. Its a different interpretation of what Liberty City should be. LC in III was based on Chicago and New York City. Whereas IV's LC is a NY only, with a little bit of New Jersey thrown in for good luck. Raptomex
GTAIV has no connection to GTAIII. Minor things like car names, diners, etc, are the same. It's a completely new city and story.

I read in a preview that the leone's derelict mansion is somewhere. Also Mr Wongs and the 24/7 supermarkets are there.

bmuzyka
I would like to think of it as there being 2 differant Liberty Cities in the GTA canon. Much like there is 2 Nashvilles, one in TN and one in KY, or how there are like 10 Springfields throughout the States.

Elim Rawne
that doesn't make sense to me. its still liberty and some stuff is still there but all stuff has changed names in 7 years if you go from gta 3. Its still Liberty, but its a different interpretation of it. GTA III isn't connected to GTA IV. Ever noticed why Vice City and San Andreas weren't GTA IV and V? They were sequels to III, but they weren't new GTA games. The new GTA games are all numbered (GTA, GTA 2, GTA III and now GTA IV). If they ever have Vice City for the current gen, it won't look or be the same either. Its a totally different city, in a totally different series within Grand Theft Auto. Pat
i find it a silly move from rock star They used a new map, started in 2006, with an amazing amount of detail even in small alleyways, that's two times as big, and is much closer to NYC, but you think they should've done a next-gen version of the Liberty City in GTA III instead? Uh, yeah, right. I fail to see how the hell that was a "silly move."
jack III
well they could have kept the island names and bridge names the same and streets though. just looks stupid considering its the same city .
Elim Rawne
well they could have kept the island names and bridge names the same and streets though. just looks stupid considering its the same city . But its not. It just happens to share the same inspiration and be created by the same people. For example: the islands are a totally different shape and there are three new islands that were not present in GTA III (Bohan, Convoy Island and Charger Island) Its not the same city. jack III
well then if its not the same city it should be called something different. anyway forgetting all that sillyness the game looks great very realistic eliments to it. shall be buying in the next few days. DarkPassenger
Jack III, kindly use your brain and think about this. It's not GTAIII, it's GTAIV, it's called Liberty City but because it's a NEW GAME it's a NEW CITY.
markiij
They changed the city a bit cause it would've been boring if you already played III and LCS I think. EDIT: The old LC was also very small.
a_flyin_penguin
It's a different canon. It's a reinvention of the series. Do you realize that Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas were the original cities from the original GTA? Based on your logic, they should have never reinvented those three cities for GTA III, Vice, and San An.

And, like I said based on your logic, you should have had the same complaint about GTA III. It was completely different from the original Liberty City. GTA III was not the first incarnation of LC. In fact, The IV version is much closer to the original scope and structure of the first vision. There are some of the same area names that were pulled straight from that one. That, in turn, renders your point moot.

ALSO GTA IV is made with having a clear thought that GTA III (map and story) never happenend. Different canon so to speak.

emma_north1
I don't think they should have used the same city at all. Liberty City in III could never be made accurate or comprehensive for IV without completely re-modelling it, because it simply wasn't either of those things. RockStar did a good thing redesigning it. Magic_Al
I advocate the parallel universe theory. Liberty City retroactively was always like the new one and the plots and characters of the GTA3 series games all took place, but it was so long ago nobody we meet in GTA4 knows or cares about it. Rewrite history so it fits what we see now. I've only played a few hours of GTA4 so far, but judging from what's on TV San Andreas still exists and looks the way it did. I noticed that too, the voice acting in GTA4 is natural sounding and the dialogue is great. I'm glad video games have finally evolved to a point where voice acting is pretty normal now, compared to when it was unbearable. Liberty City is much better now, they actually have street names now
