ZaZ9291
In the 3rd trailer he says "zdravo braèeru" which is Serbian for "Hi, brother." Serbian is very close to Russian, so people can be excused from getting them confused. Then there is this: Also, he is a war veteran and from the evidence we can gather it ws the Bosnian war. Once we have that, we can assume that since he was young during that war that he was born there, especially as he talks about the old country to the point of it really just making sense. Yes, in one of the missions I thought I was hearing a Giberish-Russian, it sounded almost Russian. Oh and in the last/second to last mission Dimitri calls Niko a "Balkan Swine." If I recall correctly.
Death_Blade
No he didn't. He came from Eastern Europe, not Russia. Russia is part of Eastern Europe, you twat. WTF is wrong with you people. Look it up, I see this crap all the time. RUSSIA IS IN EASTERN EUROPE >_>. Does this even really matter?? Call him what you want. Who cares if hes russian, serbian, or some other nationality. Play the freakin game and stop arguing over it.
JLF05
by who? look. his accent clearly gives away he is russian. Russian accents, Ukrainian accents and Serbian accents are EXACTLY the same. Very little difference at all between the accents of all the old USSR Socialist nations. Niko is Serbian, get the game guide

JLF05
I don't understand why he knows english. Does every country speak it? It seems like that's everyones second language. Simply because the game is mainly sold in America / England / Australia All english speaking nations. Just making it user-friendly.

DosTacos
Niko's accent sounds like he used to live in Republika Srpska, which is a part of Bosnia that has a lot of Serbian people (a majority in many areas) of ethnic serbs living inside it. It is a part of the country of the Federation of Bosnia i Herzogovnia, but they speak Serbian and identify as Serbian. This is where a lot of the war in the 1990's was, along with the rest of Bosnia and parts of Serbia itself. Wikipedia on Republika Srpska Maybe this is not true and Niko is from Belgrade (capital of Serbia), Vojvodina, or a part of Croatia which also has Serbs living in it. But from Banja Luka is my best guess. He is a Serb, but Serbs can be from Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro (Crna Gora) or other places as well. EDIT: made the english better Edited May 8, 2008 by DosTacos

gunholder
Niko grew up in Serbia. But not sure if this means he is Serbian smile.gif Dude, what else could he be? with a clear Serbian surname and a common firstname. I know nothing about Russia, but maybe when he was young it all was one place back then? No it wasn't, Serbia was a part of former Yugoslavia. Such as Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro with two autonomous republics Vojvodina and Kosovo Me my self am Bosnian. Ethnically that is. I wouldn't think it is allowed to speak another language than english here right? So I'll answer in english. "RS" is just a region inside of Bosnia, so it's still Bosnia. But yes, I'm from the Federation, not from RS part of Bosnia.

gunholder
I`m from Serbia and i`ve never met someone from mine country that has that kind of surname or name... My friend, you have to also now that "Bellic" is just how americans pronounce it (Bellik) but it is Belić if my surname would be "Bajramović" or "Avdić" the americans would say "Bayramovikk" or "Avdikk" because they simple can't pronounce the name. Actually, I have no problems with that, it may be considered as a big miss from Rockstars point, but since it's in New York, it would most probably suite fine anyway if him being called Bellic (Bellik) Nikola = Niko

rofles
im half serb i found out before any missions when i broke a car window and he said jebiga (which is serb for f*ck it) no other language has jebiga except serbian was interesting to see a game with a serb in it. but it was also very very very mean of r* to make niko kill albanians :\ f*cking shamefull imo. gunholder
I missedunderstood your point there... Sorry for going another language, but I hope it's okay. I won't use it in the future, just to explain better for my friend here. Edited May 8, 2008 by gunholder

Me, as a Bosnian, have no problems playing as a Serbian, actually, I find it cool that it's a person from Former Yugoslavia that speaks the same language as I do... Serbs, Bosnians and Croats got alot of incommon, but also alot of differences. Edited May 8, 2008 by gunholder
