Vlad didn't call him a Serb he called him a Serf, as in Serfdom.

I had subtitles on, and he called him a Serb. Besides, it's kind of hard to mistake "F" for "B."

You misread. He does infact call him a SERF. It fits in with his theme of yokels and peasants also.

 

EDIT: At some point in the story he or Roman actually mention being from Serbia. I can't exactly remember where it is said though.

Yeah at the begin when Niko gets off the boat he first speaks to Roman in their language Roman said "your English is better than my Serbian".

In serbia the name Niko and the last name Belic are very rare, it is certanlly used more in Croatia. And it`s spelled Belić not Belich(Belič)...

I find it extremely stupid that they made the protagonist of GTA IV, a Serbian. Since they were going for an Eastern European, then it would of made so much more sense to make the protagonist an Albanian. I mean seriously, there is thousands maybe millions of Albanians living in New York. What I also find very stupid is, there is no Albanian gang/mafia in the game. Only a couple of guys you kill in the beginning of the game and thats it. There is a very low population of Serbians living in New York, as of now.

 

I'm not just saying this, because I'm Albanian. But instead, just stating my true opinion.

 

But I guess, I can see what they were trying to do. Since New York has barely any Serbs, they decided to bring one in. And have you make your way to the top. With the help of some friends.

I'm pretty certain that in the scene being mentioned so many times that Vlad called him a serf, which ties in with him calling Niko and other people peasents and such. He also told someone in another scene that he was not from Russia.

 

I think Rockstar actually said something about not mentioning the exact birthplace of Niko didn't they? Obviously if they said he was from a country someone in that country would be offensive.

Unless you've lived in a cave your whole life, you'll be able to tell languages apart from others, and hell, if you're good enough, you'll be able to name most languages.

Also, in my game, mikhail called niko a "yokel" when they met each other in roman's garage so maybe the dialogue is different for all of us. I've heard that the cutscenes were done a couple different ways so it wouldn't get monotonous.

Dude, I've met one russian in my whole life. I've never met an albanian or a serbian ever. I don't live in a cave. I can tell you the difference between Irish, japanese, russian, german, french, spanish, italian and others but give me a f*cking break if you think I'm going to be able to tell one eastern european language from another. I live in Oregon, I'm surounded by oregonians who speak crappy english. I don't know where you're from but you need to get your head out of your ass if you think that everyone should be able to destinguish between every dialect in every language on the planet. Balkan refers to a huge reigion of Europe including Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania, and Greece. This means Dimtri is russian, because he wouldnt insult himself if he was from the Balkan peninsula. And since Niko fought in the Bosnian war Im gonna conclude he was either bosnian, croatian or serbian
