Does this game PERMENANTLY demage the PS3?

EDIT: I meant "damage" blush.gif

I'm hearing all this stuff about GTA IV breaking the blu-ray reader, and the PS3 becoming unusable!

Is this true? Is there any validity in the statement? Does the freezing of the game cause the Ps3 to break?

I bought my PS3 on eBay, so I can't return it if it bricks. Someone please answer my question, because I'm too afraid to put the game in the machine as of now.

The game itself does not damage the Blu-Ray, if the game freezes a lot, and the lens is in a constant search, stop, eventually it will stop to work. It happened to me on Assassin's Creed, it froze and my BD died. Thats why i avoid to play any game that freezes....

Freezing/Crashing is not good for any system.

Well it looks like only certain PS3 are affected (60Gb ).

Like for example mine .... suicidal.gif

Played the game for 5h and then it froze, the next day it refused to read any blueray disk...

so now i'm sending it in an i'll have to wait 7-8 weeks for a fix...

Today i bought a second one (with a second gta4). Why?

So i can play today and as gta is sold out here and my old PS3 plays ps2 games i might make +$ (not nearly enough for the pain... )

my blue ray "died", couldn't read any discs. i kept trying and trying. Guess what, been playing 4 hours now....no freezes + i exited the game to see if the Blue ray could read the dics, it could. then i booted gta4 up and it runs fine.

Looks like i brought a dead blue ray back to life smile.gif

Played for 6 hrs yesterday, then went out for 3 hrs, then when i got back played one mission and it crashed after an auto-save, turned off ps3 from the back, then played some more for 40mins, then it crashed again. haven't tried since.

So..

Should I put it in, or wait for a patch or something?

I'm gonna wait a week or so and if there is no new info regarding a patch or anything then i'll just go ahead and buy it...best ase it works fine and the gamble paid off. Worst case it bricks my PS3 and I send it in to get fixed/replaced. Allthough depending on what's said by R* when i'm getting it will change. If they have a working solution or a patch announced i'll wait until the patch is released to get it. I've waited a year and a half I an wait another few weeks.

if you have an "old" ps3 with 60Gb hdd (mine is an EU model) your blueray could quit... as GTA4 is streaming a lot of data...

different models seem just to have freezing issues...

waiting can not hurt your PS3 but who has that kind of patience...

Certainly not me!

I have a launch 60GB PS3, which is why I'm so worried.

So far ive read that a couple of freezes occour now and then, Ive had 2 last night. And I have the 40 gig eu version. Either a patch for the game comes or a firmware update can help us now. For me its no biggy, 2 freezes arent that bad as long as it stays that way. Ive been playing vor about 4 hours today and nothing strange happened. Could it be that sertain points in the game cause these freezes?

Don't wanna tempt fate, but I've got a 60GB PS3 (not launch) and its only ever froze once on me, from about 5-7 days of play with about 8-12 hours a day (yep, addicted).

I know no one IRL with a PS3 who have had any freezes. It seems quite bogus to me, all these reports.

Oddly enough my game only crashes when roaming, and I have a 40GB PS3 model...

I'm seriously thinking it has something to do with the internet, because as with some reports mine only froze after I hooked up my ethernet cable to try and go online, though it's still continuing to freeze after removing it.

I'd like to see someone play the game for the first time without internet off and on for a few days to see if it freezes or not.

Me , friend, i never use the ethernet cable, more than for updates, it still random freezes sad.gif

Nah mate , your fine.

20 hours so far on a 40gb Aus PS3 with no problems or freezes or graphical issues.

(Starting to think most reports are bogus)

I've logged nearly as many hours (Roughly 14/15) on both my 40 GB PS3 and "Arcade Edition" X-Box 360; both consoles work like a charm.

If you've yet to experience any problems, then you needn't fret.

I got a 60gb ps3 which i got a month after release, still dont have gta4 yet suicidal.gif , and it keeps crashing on burnout paradise randomly so I have to hold down the power button to turn it off. Might just be too much for it to handle or something on certain ones because another of my freinds has burnout and same ps3 and has no crashes. Wierd

It broke my 5 month old 40GB PS3. Right now its not reading blu ray or games. I havent had any time to try fixing it yet. For the people that had their blu ray drive break then start working again, What did you do to fix it? It would be nice to be able to play when I get home.
