ps3 appears VERY dark

Recommended Posts

just booted the game on my standard def tv, appears fine! not dark

load up on my 40" sony bravia lcd tv, and the game is incredibly unplayable, dark and un viewable..everything not majorly lighted is essentially shadowed BADLY.

anyone else get this? or know anything besides just tweaking brightness etc..makes it lookm like sh*t

Is the tv new? Also, have you adjusted your contrast and brightness settings on your console and television?

Go to your PS3 dashboard, go to display options and set your RGB range to LIMITED. Not FULL. Full will be great for movies but the black level for games might be more inconsistent and will necessitate using the limited setting. If that doesn't work, try configuring a custom picture mode just for gaming on your tv and try to play with the GAMMA in the ADVANCED portion of your picture settings and the brightness. I have a Sony Bravia LCD also and had the same problem. I've callibrated my tv using test patterns so i try to change settings elsewhere before i change them on the tv so it doesn't mess up the callibration settings. For me, adjusting the brigtness/contrast settings in the game were enough to fix it.

This kind of worked for me. My display was extremely dark (even with full brightness and contrast in the in-game settings) and setting the RGB range to limited immediately made things very, very bright; even at night. However, with RGB set to limited things were perhaps too bright, and the colors were pale and washed out, at night the sky was just a pale gray rather than black. This made night seem weird.

However, I then tried RGB range set back to full but *disabled* super-white, which I'd previously always had on. This seems to work for my configuration. With super-white off and RGB range set to full the blacks at night remain black but overall the display is much brighter than before. So it's clear to see everything but it still looks like night-time.
