inmaterichard
I got GTA on Sunday and it freezes and I have to restart the console it happens every hour or so, I thought it may be a dodgy disc, so I took the disc back to the shop and got a new one and almost 40 mins into the game and it froze on me again. This is really annoying especially when playing online, my console is fine (360) all my other games work perfectly well it only happens on GTA is anyone else getting this ? Your console is obviously not fine, as you are the only person having this problem. I am having the same problem as this guy. i called xbox up and they said it was the game clogging up the cashe memory. every other game worked fine for three days with GTA still freezing every 20 mins. i have around 5 friend with simiular problems. but today my xbox completely broke, lol. well im not that happy, but the strang thing is i only just got my 360 back from repair (5 days ago). after GTA froze again and again, around 9 times. finally today the xbox cant load any games correctly with out crashing. it just crashes on any loading sequence. i would put money on it being GTA repeatedly crashing my console has damaged the system. just a guess... i think there is a memory leak in the memory which has now caused damage. I WOULD LIKE TO ADD. BULLY, on release had loads and loads of bugs. but we can wait for that to be patched. WE CANNOT WAIT FOR GTA TO BE PATCHED!!!, it should had better debugging after production. im am, as most of you are, very disapointed. its not a small problem and is ruining the enjoyment of the game for me. I have to say im shocked at the size of this problem. when was the last time you brought a game an had this problem? personally, i dont remember! Masterpete_99
Reports of Grand Theft Auto IV freezing up have been circulating message boards since the game's launch Tuesday, but Rockstar Games has been tight-lipped as to the reason or the remedy, passing off requests for public comment onto Sony. While the majority of complaints appear to be coming from PlayStation 3 users, Xbox 360 owners with glitch-ridden game experiences have also voiced their frustrations online. Take-Two representatives may not have been willing to go on the record about the issue, but the publisher's tech support team does not have the same luxury when it comes to customer complaints. An inquiry into the Take-Two tech support site yielded the following array of suggestions on how to fix the problem. The 12-part response follows below: Please run through the following, go through in order. 1) Delete the game's install data. This is done via the PS3 options. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Game Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, from the menu select Delete. This will delete the game's install information. 2) Delete the game's save files. To delete any save files you will need to do the following. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Save Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, and from the context menu select Delete. 3) Disable your Internet connectivity for the PS3. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Settings' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Network Settings'. Now scroll down to the Internet connection option and press x, now select the disable option. Once this has been done unplug the ethernet cable if you are connecting to the Internet if using this. 4) Disable the console's information board. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Network' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Information Board', highlight this and press triangle. From the menu select 'Do not display' Press X to confirm this. 5) Disable Media Server functionality. Scroll to Settings, now scroll up / down to 'Network Settings' select Media Server connection. Once this has been done press triangle and change the option Disabled. 6) Delete all of the system's Internet cache. To do this scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Network' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Internet Browser', highlight this and press X. Once you browser opens press the triangle button once, from the new menu highlight the 'Tools' option and press X. Scroll down the menu until you reach 'Delete Cookies' and press X. Confirm the files deletion. Repeat this for 'Delete Cache'. 7 ) Turn off the PS3 screen saver. Use the cross media bar to scroll to 'Settings', select 'Display Settings'. Now highlight 'Screensaver' and set this to 'Do not use'. 8 ) Once this has been done, manually restart you PS3 by holding down the power button for 5 seconds it will beep once and then shut down. Release the power button and re-press it and hold for about 5 seconds. The system will then boot and reset all display settings. You will be prompted to reset your display settings to how you require them. 9) Once restarted please try the game again, you will be prompted to reinstall. Once the game has started please turn off the following features: 1) The game's auto-save. Press Start, Game, and locate the Auto-save option. Turn this off. 2) Turn off the game's flicker filter. Press Start, Display and locate the Flicker Filter option. Turn this off. 3) Turn off the controller vibration feature. Press Start, Controls and locate the vibration option. Turn this off. If that doesn't solve the problem, Take-Two allows tech support users to reopen their cases within seven days. As for Sony, earlier today, a representative with the company confirmed a 'freezing' issue with GTAIV on "a limited number of PS3s." He added that Sony has received "an extremely low volume" of complaint calls to its customer service line, and that it is working with all concerned parties to pin down and fix the issue. Microsoft has not yet responded to GameSpot's inquiries on problems with the Xbox 360 edition of the game. GameSpot editors have yet to receive a response to a Take-Two tech support ticket filed for that version of the game.
shields_t
I've also been having a few issues with GTA IV on the PS3 (First gen PAL 60gb). I originally had freezes which would last for 4-5 minutes at a time and then eventually kick back into action. Taking the advice on this forum I removed the installed components and reinstalled which has certainly increased stability but not fully fixed the game. Now I can play the game, which I have done at length, but every so often the radio stations will drop out, or the speech in a cut scene, and it seems the only way I can get them back is by pausing the game, which then takes a good 15-20 seconds before the map appears. I've also had important pieces of scenery not drawing, such as the first date in the bowling alley, where the screen prompt told me to apprach the counter but the game did not display a counter, or a bowling alley for that matter, but instead an empty untextured room. It is a little disappointing since this was truly the game I had been looking forward to since it's announcement, having loved the previous incarnations and played them to death. But so long as Rockstar are working on the issues, I'm happy to grin and bear it for the time being. shields_t

Dorelliun
Ok, I have gone through the entire lame 12 steps that were suggested to make the game playable. I also went out and exchanged the game for another copy. Guess what? Now instead of the video just freezing, it locks up even worse. No video, or it freezes upon playing the intro sequence. Sound sticks too. WTF Rockstar? I mean, cmon. I'm still sitting here (along with a LOT of other people) with a copy of your game that DOESN'T RUN! We would kindly appreciate a real answer that contains a real solution to a real problem. You screwed up and we expect you to fix it, and right soon. (PS3, 60GB, purchased 2nd day of U.S. release, fully patched, all other games work perfectly....except this piece of crap...) Death_Blade
Has anyone else actually lost their save file? I was playing a few mins ago and the whole system crashed. So I restarted but the game seems to stop at the loading screen. Im gonna try loading again in a little bit, but im gonna be red hot pissed if I have to start over. I was at about 40% completion too....
damo98989
Try forcing it to play in 720P instead of 1080i. Runs a hell of a lot better for me when i did that on the PS3.

MasterJake
I too am a victim of this freezing plague. I am very pissed off at rockstar. Why the hell would they put a game on the market if it doesnt even work! The first time it happened to me i went to the nearest gamestore and asked for a new one, they gave me a new copy instantly, no charge. they must of known that the game is bugged! in the meantime rockstar is playing grand theft video game with us! they are stealing our money and refusing to say anything. i smell a lawsuit. anyways i have always been a fan of their games but this is just unacceptable. i have a 360 with a hitachi drive and it still freezes! why are they doing this to us?!?!?!?! NIKKO420
i created an account cause i saw a few post that said your system would be shot soon. Might not be true i had a horrible experience w/ multiple copies of bioshock (exchanged 2 tried a few that belonged to friends). They would all freeze on my system but not on others. After some goggling i found i wasn't the only one and decided to wait for a patch. after the second patch BONG I've beaten bioshock with no freeze ups. It sucks you may not be able to play gta4 but its not a guaranteed rrod so thats a positive

propagandhi83
i find it hilarious that here, and on multiple other forums, including ps3 forums, the minute a user has reported a freezing problem, everyone has jumped to the conclusion that the original poster has a dodgy console. Even in situations where the user states that every other game is fine. How insightful of you all to immediately tell the user they are wrong and their console is to blame. Take a look around the net and eat your words. The freezing problem is very real. I have a 360 which freezes the game and a ps3. Mine only freezes however if i try to use multiplayer. I have found workarounds that appear to work, for instance the ps3 is fine if u turn off the autosave and flicker filter features, and delete your internet cache. Guys rockstar and take two need to resolve this. It's not a small number of people having difficulties. Some have estimated that 10% of consoles will experience this. Whilst I don't know where they pulled that figure from, if this game was rumoured to sell 9 million copies in it's first week, and we make the rash judgement that each copy is bought for an individual console/user this makes 900,000 people very unhappy. I'd say thats a serious little problem u have there.

Tyedyeskyguy
Mine was freezing just like everyone else. I have the 80GB PS3. The simple fix was just taking the PS3 offline. Now it works just fine. No freezing, no nothing. I haven't had a problem since. And, when i wnat to play on-line, I just go to my phone and it makes me log back in. Never freezes though. PS3, menu, users, select yourself, triangle, go offline problem solved.

Mine was never connected to the internet, was never enabled to begin with. 12 steps no success. 3 exchanges no success.* The problem continues in perpetuity. rustmandevil
hey no need to restart or reinstall or sign out of the psn. i have a better idea. i got the game on tuesday. after playing 1 and a half hour i got a freeze while i was getting on a bike. then i switched off the console and switched on the console (PS3). i just copied my saved game into an pendrive and started the game and after that i have been playing 9 hrs a day and till now i din't get a single freeze. wat i did was just keep my ps3 on vertical position and kept it freely in the open. u c ps3 givs out a lot of heat and due to tat heat the game is disc is not able to run. so just try this method. keep your ps3 in the open and keep it in vertical position. try tat its wrkng fr me

Dorelliun
Update: 5/9/08, 0949 hours. I just got off the phone with Sandra #47020 with Sony Computer Entertainment of America regarding the continuing lockup/freeze issues being experienced across consoles. She actually had a few interesting things to say, which I will relate here. I will be addressing specifically the PS3 version of GTA 4. Sandra told me first off that Sony, Rockstar and Take-Two are all fully aware of the existence of the problem. She also confirmed that indeed, there is nothing wrong with my console (60 GB Release model), as a few quick questions regarding its functionality revealed that the problem is not with the hardware. This is confirmed, per Sandra #47020 of SCEA. Are you with me so far? Great. There's more. Sandra also indicated matter-of-factly that although they are acutely aware there is a problem, because almost NOBODY is calling SCEA (Sony) to report it, they still haven't definitively identified the source of the problem. Everyone is calling Rockstar and Take-Two screaming for blood when they need to be calling Sony and giving them the details. She indicated the quicker more console owners start opening trouble tickets, the quicker Sony will be able to narrow the problem down to the source. You can quote her on that too. She indicated that they understand our frustration, but that until it's properly reported to the right people, speculation will continue to run amuk and it will just take them longer to identify the problem and put out a fix. So here it is folks, everyone needs to call SCEA (Sony) at 1-866-345-7669 and report the problem to the Technical Support Department immediately, if you haven't already. They are anxiously awaiting our calls, and after learning all of this, I completely understand their frustration as well. They want to help, but they need us to REPORT THE PROBLEM DIRECTLY TO SONY so they can get a fix out quicker. I want to experience this game just the same as everyone else. To the XBox360 owners who are also experiencing problems, I'm sorry I can't address your particular issues, but I would strongly urge you to call Microsoft and report it, as I suspect that they are probably experiencing the same problem.
