JFLIPDAWG
Just writing to let you know I feel your pain. Went to midnight release and returned the game twice before 2 am. All 3 copies froze and froze, no RROD. On top of that it would occasionaly not recognize the disc, saying "please put the DVD in an Xbox360 console" in four languages...as if it were a DVD and not an XBOX360 console. Frustration ensued. Spoke to XBOX and they are having me send it in claiming it is a power problem, and that I would have to send in the power cable with the console this time. I've had some bad luck with this machine...after just buying couldn't eject the disc, 6 months later RROD, now this. Warranty was up by less than a month. They tried to get me to pay 99 bucks, to which I calmly replied "this is bs, can't something be done about this I bought the 360 for this game and this is the third time" and they came back after talking to a supervisor and now I'm paying nothing because "It's the third time" CODIV works fine, even on LIVE, as do other games except the one I really want to play. Rant over.

pkohler01
I bought my xbox 360 around xmas 2007. I bought it because GTA4 was coming out for it. I wound up getting bully several weeks ago and was welcomed by it freezing my xbox constantly. Eventually a patch was released and that fixed the problem. Given that experience, I was half expecting the same thing to happen with GTA4. Sure enough, I was able to play the game for less than 20 minutes before the first freeze. Once it froze, I shut the xbox down and went to bed. This afternoon, I tried to play again. The game froze every time I hit a button. Listening to some advice, I deleted the save game file and tried again. Same thing happened. The game froze whenever I hit a button. So I returned the disc and got a new copy. Once again, the same thing happened. If I let the opening cinematic run, it would freeze. If I skipped it, the game would freeze once you gain control of Niko. So I returned the disc again, same thing happened. So essentially I have a $70 useless plastic disc. I do not believe that this will lead to RROD as it's obviously just a glitch in the Rockstar software but, that's really not the point. I've been waiting for the new GTA since before itwas announced that they were working on it. I get the game, get it home, and it doesn't work. It's a shame that the launch of this product is greeted with problems like this as I'm obviously not alone.
wafflemaster
Well I'm having similar problems, but not quite the same as you guys. First off, my Xbox is (relatively) new (12/07) and the DVD drive is a Hitatchi one (didn't even know there were any different ones, thanx to the guy with the pic). The game is running fairly well, but after about 20-30 mins I get disconnected from Xbox live (I'm playing SP BTW, haven't even tried online play yet) and from then on I will have occasional momentary freezes. Not long ones, maybe a second or so, and then it will continue as normal. I haven't needed to reboot or anything, and it's more of an annoyance than anything.. Anyone else have this problem ?? I thought perhaps it (the freezes) was my Xbox trying to re-connect me to live, and that was overloading the CPU for a second or so. Any feedback would be appreciated !! smitdawg
I have one of the 80 gb models purchased when they were first released and I can't play longer than 10 minutes until it freezes if I get lucky enough to get through the first cut scene. commorancy
I got GTA on Sunday and it freezes and I have to restart the console it happens every hour or so, I thought it may be a dodgy disc, so I took the disc back to the shop and got a new one and almost 40 mins into the game and it froze on me again. This is really annoying especially when playing online, my console is fine (360) all my other games work perfectly well it only happens on GTA is anyone else getting this ? Your console is obviously not fine, as you are the only person having this problem. Sorry, but no. I've had at least one freezup in GTA 4 within the first hour of play. I had previously played Viking beginning to end without one single freeze. This console is only about 1.5 months old, so it's very doubtful it's about to RROD. GTA 4 is buggy on the Xbox 360. Now, it's possible it is a batch of bad discs or it's bad code. My disk is perfectly clean, so it could be a pressing problem. Either way, it's a problem that Rockstar needs to resolve. Here are my issues within the first 5 hours of play: The game spontaneously went into and out of online mode on its own (I even heard someone's Xbox live voice conversation) The game completely froze (required power off) I had a 'LOADING...' screen that never loaded (required power off). The LOADING text was still animated. Yet, after a reboot, the same exact situation worked perfectly. I've tried twice to press Y to become a passenger in a car, yet the door will not open. When I move and try again, he jacks the car (doesn't become a passenger) Game controls are sluggish and sometimes do not register button presses These are not RROD symptoms. These are either game bugs or disk problems. I'm voting for game bugs. As I said, either way, Rockstar needs to address these as this really is intolerable for a game of the stature of GTA4. -- Brian
m176244
Just wanted to say its not all the Benq drives,I bought my xbox at the start of '08 and it has a benq drive in it and i'm playing gta with no problems,no freezing or hanging and it always boots fine with no texture loading problems. killswitch_tatie
Mine froze last night too (PS3). It must be because the console was on all day as the freezes happened late at night. Make sure your console is in as cool environment and well ventilated. Remember this is a very demanding game and will get the components inside very hot. I think taking a break every couple of hours for 30 mins will sort it out.
dncornholio
same problem here. xbox 360 preimium, has been repaired (rrod) two weeks ago. all other games are running fine! at first i was able to play up to four hours, then the freeze came. now its like every five minutes!!! after restart the concole it's possible to play cod4/forza2/etc. without freeze - so no rrod again. dvd is a benq drive. i put some spaceholders under the console and under the power supply and also pointed a fan on the concole - both things are not very hot. this really is a huge disappointment!!! m176244
Could it be possible the heat from the disc inside the drivers is causing this issue?Just throwing it out there as its happening on ps3's and xbox's across all the different variants. killswitch_tatie
I think that they need to release a patch to tweak the game play. The consoles are working way too hard and getting very hot. You can see it working it's ass off when the frame rates drop, the components can only take so much punishment before they will shutdown.

DEV1L
This is quite a disappointment, but i am pretty thankful mine does not freeze as much as some other gamers, i just hope to god that a fix for this comes out pretty soon because, it is the best game i have ever played. NOTE: the falcon chip in the 360 seems to have no problems with this freezing issue, if anyone has the falcon chip and your game has froze can you please let us know. ronnied
I purchased GTA IV for the Xbox 360. I cannot get out of the opening scene without my system freezing up at some point. I have sent an email to Rockstar tech support with no response. This is very frustrating and I hope that they get it figured out soon. It sucks feeling like you wasted $60. sLM01
ok I have a Brand New Elite and I get the same problem as I am typing this. I am going to try freeing up my hard drive and see if it resolves anything.. I saw blogs where there are only finding freezing on the PS3 version but not the Xbox but hey the Xbox is freezing too so it has to be the game in general but at the same time I do also realize that we might be just an unlucky few.. i dunno ???? X-Vert
Mine just started freezing... I popped the cd in for the first time, it loaded, went straight to doing missions, in the middle of driving Roman to the hardware store in the first mission, it freezes.. I restart, walk out of the safe house, into the street, get in a car... and it freezes. Then I let it cool off for about 20 mintues, started it up again. I repeated the first mission, the game froze as soon as I brought Roman to the hardware store and the video started up. I'm REALLY fking disappointed and heated right now, I was anticipating this game for the past year, and its the ONLY reason I still have an XBox, because I dont play any other games on it.
